About the property

House, 4 Bedrooms, 4 Baths, (Sleeps 8 -14)

Casa de Abuela is a custom home with a swimming pool overlooking the rain forest. It is a five minute walk from one of the most beautiful beaches on the central Pacific coast. The property is located in a neighborhood that overlooks Esterillos Oeste and consists of 10 - 12 custom homes with people that mostly live here year round.

Esterillos Oeste is a typical Costa Rica fishing village where fishermen still roll their boats on logs into the surf. It is located on Playa de Esterillos, a long curving beach that rarely has more than a few surfers and scattered sun bathers lying in the sand or playing in the tide pools.

The house features a bedroom wing and a ‘great room’ separated by a two story open air hall. There are four bedrooms, each with its own private bath and air conditioning. Two of the bedrooms accommodate a family of four with a double bed and a set of bunk beds, all built out of Costa Rican cedar by a local furniture maker. The upstairs bedrooms also have external entrances for privacy.

The hall is over two stories high, providing cool breezes even on the hottest day. The great room has a cathedral ceiling and three sets of double doors for air circulation. One set leads out on to the large front porch, providing a perfect setting for morning coffee and bird watching. The kitchen area has a large island for cooking and serving. The dining area has a table that seats 12. Like the bedrooms, the great room is air conditioned and has furniture made of Costa Rican cedar.

If you'd like some excitement or a night on the town, it's a 15 minute drive to Jaco, the Las Vegas of Costa Rica. It has casinos, fine dining, sushi restaurants and jazz bars. You can also get a massage and shop for souvenirs. Or if you're interested in a romantic dinner watching the sunset over the Pacific, Villa Caletas is the perfect spot, just up the road from Jaco. Manuel Antonio National Park, one of the nicest parks in Costa Rica, is 45 minutes away.

About Shirley Linde

I built Casa de Abuela in 2005 not realizing what a risky venture I was undertaking. The entire adventure, however, has turned out to be a life-changing experience. So many things that could have gone wrong didn't and of the ones that did we managed to "make lemonade out of lemons" every time. My goal was to have a place where I could bring my children and grandchildren to experience one of the most one of the most beautiful places in the world. At this point, we all agree that Casa de Abuela has been that and more.

Shirley Linde purchased this house in 2006

Why Shirley Linde chose Puntarenas

I am retired and spend my summers at Casa de Abuela. The Pacific Ocean keeps the region cool at night and the rains keep it cool during the day. It is a beautiful Aarea of the world with mountainous jungles crashing into the majestic Pacific.

What makes this house unique

It is extremely safe, private and quiet in this community with great bird watching and the joy of watching the monkeys and other wildlife that live in the rainforest around the house..

Wonderful home for a group near the beach

  • 5 of 5

We had a group of about 13 people in town to help a church with some local outreach and construction, and so we had singles and couples of all ages. We found this lovely home to be ideal because of the four separate bedrooms -- some with bunk beds that would accommodate four in a room with a private bath. The best part is the large kitchen and family room area where we gathered for some really nice meals. We also had a lot of fun relaxing after a day of work in the warm swimming pool surrounded by tropical vegetation. The porches on the pool side and the other side of the home are also fun places to sit and hang out (or swing in a hammock).

The location is a short drive from the town of Esterillos. It might be a bit of a hike uphill for some people, but downhill is an easy walk to the beach. The beach is uncrowded, and we saw an amazing sunset one night while we strolled and looked for shells. We also had some good pizza at Rancho Cerro in the town.

Shirley was great at getting back to us right away with any questions. Then when a circumstance meant we might need to stay one more night, she even offered to change her personal plans to use the home to accommodate us. We would LOVE to come back again to this home.

Tropical Getaway Near the Beach

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I had a fantastic stay at this beautiful tropical getaway home nestled in a rainforest setting. The kitchen and large island were great for cooking up fresh food purchased at the local farmer's market. In the mornings, we would sit outside on the lovely patio with our tea and coffee watching the abundant hummingbirds, butterflies, and birds enjoying the beautiful flowers. After breakfast, we would walk down to take a stroll along the beach to catch a glimpse of the amazing La Sirena statue in the ocean waves and look for the Macaws munching on wild almonds. In the evenings, we would pick limes from the lime tree in the yard and make our happy hour drinks before heading to the refreshing pool. The beds were comfortable with air conditioned rooms. If you look close you can spot Herb, the Iguana, which we named while we were there. I loved that if we needed something, there are two small grocers within walking distance of the home. Other then a great getaway home, the location was perfect homebase for sightseeing of the Central Pacific coast of Costa Rica.

Charming home in an amazing town

  • 5 of 5

We rented this home to serve as accommodations for our wedding guests in Esterillos Oeste, and every single one of them had nothing but rave reviews of their stay here. The house is laid out perfectly for groups with an incredibly charming and comfortable common area. Kate and Dave the property managers were so friendly and such a huge help in providing local recommendations and insider tips. All the amenities you can think of are in the house, and the location in town in nicely private yet convenient. Everyone was comfortable as could be, and we couldn't have asked for a better property for our guests. Thank you so much for all the help and the hospitality, we hope to return again soon!

Best Christmas Holiday Ever!

  • 5 of 5

We would definitely consider this property for future holidays in Costa Rica. Great house, all the amenities plus A/C and a pool. Quiet jungle like setting. A couple of resident Iguanas entertained us along with numerous birds, butterflies and a family of Pizotes in the trees. The manager Dave took care of any special requests. Great surf beach close by. I have already referred others to check it out.

Rainforest paradise in Costa Rica

  • 5 of 5

This spacious house a few minutes from the beach is surrounded by nature. Amazing flowers attract lots of butterflies and hummingbirds; white faced monkeys visit occasionally in the trees; and iguanas and smaller lizards entertain you as they pass through the yard. You can stroll on the beach, surf or watch surfers or take a dip in the private pool to cool off. A great place to relax while nature entertains you.

Casa de abuela

  • 5 of 5

My friends and I are called the Golden Girls. This is our third year to vacation at this fabulous Casa . The locals are very sweet and helpful .One of our favorite restaurants is right down the hill on the beach. The pool is very refreshing especially with cocktails and the monkeys performing their ballet in the palm trees.

This year the kitchen has been totally remodeled with 2 extra ceiling fans in the great room and the whole house has been repainted. What a great place! I can't forget spotting a blue crowned Mot-mot while drinking coffee in the mornings. a bird watchers paradise. The ladies and I highly recommend this vacation home and hope you enjoy it as much as we did! See you next year!!

Other sights in Costa Rica about four hours from Esterillos Oeste: Arenal Volcano and Hot Springs, Monteverde Cloud Forest, Resplendent Quetzal National Park, Nicoya Peninsula, Guanacaste, Puerto Viejo on the Caribbean coast. There are many exciting things to do from Oeste, all within an hour or less drive from the house. For example, you can go to Manuel Antonio, one of the finest national parks in CR, go white water rafting, ride the 'zip' lines over the rain forest, go deep sea fishing, or take a monkey tour in a mangrove swamp. And best of all, the road to and along this part of the coast is good all the way from San Jose to Esterillos Oeste and Quepos, a very important fact in a country where many roads are dirt and require a 4-wheel drive vehicle.
