About the host
Hosted by Laura K. Benton
Mountain Adventure Retreats was founded on a deep-rooted passion for the San Juan Mountains and a shared commitment to excellence in hospitality and property care. The venture began in 2013, sparked by Laura’s long-standing love for Ouray County. A lifelong Coloradan who first discovered the Ridgway and Ouray area in 2001, Laura brought with her an extensive background in business, marketing, and travel management. Her years of experience in the ski and property management industries across North America’s premier destinations provided the foundation for a company built on community and exceptional service.
In 2020, the team expanded when Steve moved from Dallas to join Laura in Ouray County. Steve’s arrival marked the beginning of a new chapter for the company, bringing forty-three years of high-level construction management experience to the team. Having served as Vice President for some of the nation’s top General Contractors, he integrated professional expertise in budgeting, procurement, and project oversight into the company’s property maintenance and caretaking operations. His own connection to the state dates back to 1993, when participating in Ride the Rockies ignited a lifelong passion for Colorado’s dramatic landscapes.
Today, Laura and Steve work side-by-side to lead a dedicated team of professionals focused on delivering top-tier property care. When they aren't overseeing the finer details of a guest's stay or maintaining local residences, they are often found embracing the outdoors together. Whether they are cycling, skiing, hiking, or fishing, they remain inspired by the ever-changing seasons and the rugged beauty of the San Juan Mountains.

Why they chose this property
The neighborhood surrounding 645 Main Street captures the essence of a bygone era, defined by its well-preserved Victorian architecture and a compact, walkable layout that invites exploration. As the heart of a National Historic District, this area feels like a living postcard, where colorful storefronts house independent galleries, artisan shops, and local boutiques. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, characterized by a unique small-town spirit that prioritizes local craftsmanship over big-box retailers. Residents and visitors alike enjoy a vibrant culinary scene, ranging from rooftop breweries with panoramic views to historic restaurants with rustic saloon charm, all set against a backdrop of jagged 12,000-foot peaks that create a stunning natural amphitheater around the town.
This geographic bowl serves as a dramatic stage for the changing seasons, which transform the neighborhood throughout the year. While the spring and summer bring a vibrant bloom of wildflowers and the thunderous melt of the famous Box Canyon, several other spectacular falls define the local landscape. One iconic waterfall is visible from nearly every corner of Main Street and remains accessible via a short walk to the edge of town, where its lowest tier plunges down the mountain face. Nearby, the mist from canyon-side falls and the serene, high-altitude beauty of twin cascades in the alpine basins offer additional layers to the town's reputation as a waterfall sanctuary. Whether it is the golden aspens of autumn or the snow-capped quiet of winter, the neighborhood remains a cozy retreat that perfectly balances refined town life with the raw, alpine beauty of the Rockies.

What makes this property unique
Step inside a sanctuary where the elegance of a bygone era is preserved in every thoughtful detail. The interior is a masterclass in refined alpine charm, featuring curated furniture and decor that whisper stories of the town’s storied past. Rich, polished woods and plush, period-inspired upholstery create an atmosphere that is both sophisticated and deeply comforting. Ornate light fixtures cast a soft, golden glow across the rooms, highlighting classic architectural flourishes and vintage accents that make the space feel less like a rental and more like a cherished family estate. It is a home designed for slow mornings and quiet reflection, where the weight of the modern world fades the moment you cross the threshold.
The crown jewel of this residence is the expansive balcony, an architectural rarity that offers an unrivaled vantage point overlooking the heart of the historic district. From this private perch, you are perfectly positioned to witness the rhythmic pulse of downtown life against the backdrop of towering granite peaks. Whether you are wrapped in a cozy throw with a book in hand or sharing a quiet conversation as the evening stars emerge, the balcony provides a front-row seat to the most picturesque scenes in the Rockies. It is exceptionally rare to find a property that so seamlessly blends this level of vintage luxury with a direct connection to the vibrant energy of Main Street, making it a truly unique haven for those who appreciate the finer, timeless things in life.
