About the property

Two Separate Cottages on the Beach - 7 Bedrooms, 4.5 Baths, 3 Large Living Areas

This classic 1889 cottage and it's carriage house have both been totally renovated while maintaining the historic feel. They are now totally updated to meet the needs of todays multigenerational families.

The Main House and smaller Carriage House cottage are located in a beautiful, natural landscape, with 186 feet of private beach waterfront. The 2.3 acre property ensures families privacy and with no bluff.....there are no steps. It is an easy direct walk out to the beachfront. A lovely stream runs by the Main House and the carriage house. Both cottages are surrounded by woods to the north and across the street to the east. There are endless Lake Michigan beach walks both to the north (where the eagles nest) and to the south to the Portage Lake channel. The expansive side yard provides space for lawn games. A large fire pit directly faces Lake Michigan. This waterfront property provides a great beachfront vacation for everyone.

In our new lower level walk-out, we have added two bedrooms, two full bathrooms, an additional large living area with a gas fireplace, a kitchenette/wet bar, a separate study with a twin sofa bed, and a laundry area. We also have an outdoor natural gas barbeque and an outdoor shower on our lower terrace. There are windows on all four sides of this new lower level. The windows overlook the stream and the woods to the north and Lake Michigan to the west.

We also renovated much of the main floor with an entirely new kitchen. The main level bathroom and the upstairs bathroom are newly renovated as well. The sunroom/porch with it's expansive windows provides for additional seating and a large round dining table overlooking Lake Michigan.

The main house now includes: six bedrooms, three full bathrooms, a 1/2 bath and three distinct living areas (lay out of the houses are available). There is a fully redone kitchen with dishwasher on the main level and a wet bar/kitchenette on the lower level. On the third level, there are two bedrooms , the 1/2 bath and a large deck with views of Lake Michigan and the stream. There is a fireplace on the main level as well as one in the new lower level walkout area.

The separate Carriage House is fully self contained with one bedroom and a kitchen with new stainless steel appliances. It also has a living/dining room and a queen sofa bed. The full bath has a whirlpool tub. The Carriage House also has a fireplace, a washer/dryer and it's own terrace with outdoor seating overlooking the stream. It is great place for family members who would like a bit more privacy. It has been totally renovated as well.

There is a flat screen HDTV in each house. There is also a 60" UHD/4K television on the lower level of the main house. All of theTV's are equipped with Roku streaming devices.

In summary, this is a large property that has extensive frontage on Lake Michigan with a direct walk out (no steps) down to the water. The main house and the Carriage House are classic Lake Michigan cottages, but totally renovated in 2014/15. There is a wooded area across the stream from both cottages. Woodlands across the street also provide privacy. These cottages are located in the historic Pierport community halfway between Manistee and Frankfort. Our beachfront has a beautiful sandy flat Lake Michigan beach. Enjoying long walks both north and south, on the beach is a true pleasure.

A swing overlooks Lake Michigan's beautiful sunsets.

This is a beautiful Lake Michigan waterfront setting and it is a perfect place to enjoy a classic Pure Michigan summer.

Additional pictures and room layouts are available upon request.

This property comes fully furnished with bed linens, towels, beach towels, dishes, silverware and cooking utensils.

Furnished with classic cottage furniture and some antiques.

Please know that the cottage will be up for sale this fall. Due to showings on Saturdays we will not be able to accommodate early arrivals (before 4:00PM).

A separate fee will be charged for any special event such as a wedding. It will vary depending on the number of guests expected, facilities utilized, parking required , etc.

There is a separate RV hook up site on the property. Motorhomes or trailers are not allowed without owner consent. If allowed, extra charges may be incurred.

About David and Kathryn Bisbee

We spent three years looking for a Lake Michigan waterfront property and were fortunate to find this special property. We move out during the summer months to make it available for our guests from all over the US. After 21 months of major renovations, our property now works well for extended families and gatherings of friends.

David and Kathryn Bisbee purchased this house in 2011

Why David and Kathryn Bisbee chose Bear Lake

This beautiful Lake Michigan beachfront property is flat and accessible with no steps down to the beach. We really liked having the two separate cottages. The main cottage was built in 1889 and has undergone an extensive renovation in 2014/2015.

We lifted up the main cottage and added a new lower level with 2 more bedrooms and 2 full bathrooms, a living area with a wet bar, a fireplace and a washer/dryer. The adjacent separate Carriage House was also redone with a modern kitchen and bathroom.

What makes this house unique

Several of Northwest lower Michigan's wonderful smaller towns; Frankfort, Manistee, Arcadia and Onekama and Bear Lake are located within a 10-25 minute drive. The small towns of the Leelanau Peninsula (Leland, Northport and Suttons Bay) are easily accessible within an hour. Sleeping Bear Dunes (most beautiful place in America according to GMA in 2014) and Traverse City are only an hour north. Arcadia Bluffs Golf Course (Michigan's #1 public course) is five minutes north. They have just added an additional golf course within a mile and a half of our cottages.

The perfect Lake House

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 10 adults and 8 children were delighted to spend a week at this lovely lake house. It was perfect in every way. Although modernized, the cottage still held its 100+ year old charm with weathered wood floors and cozy furniture. Everything you need is included including outdoor games (croquet, horseshoes, ring toss), sand toys, balls and towels for the beach, and a fully equipped home with 3 full size refrigerators to accommodate even the largest amount of groceries. Nothing is left out here. There is a large lawn for playing all sorts of games, a wonderful firepit with plenty of chairs and the beach is literally steps away. There are no stairs to the beach as with other homes in the area that are built up high on the bluffs. The carriage house was a perfect getaway for the grandparents with its separate bedroom, living room and bath. The stream beside the cottage entertained the 7 grandchildren the entire week. The rock hounds in the group really enjoyed hours of walking along the beach where you can walk in either direction as far as the eye can see. Just beautiful. If you get the chance to stay here, take it. It will be a memorable vacation.

High Five!

  • 5 of 5

If high fives are any indicator of a job well done, than I clearly hit a home-run when I booked the Bisbee cottage for our extended families' week on the lake. I was lavished with praise from my siblings- "Well done." "This place is amazing!" "Oh my gosh, it is so beautiful!"

We've rented cottages for over a decade and the Bisbee property is hands down our favorite! We are a large group of 10 adults and 9 children and the cottage and carriage house provided us with plenty of space, comfort, luxury, charm, beauty and convenience. Each bedroom was fully equipped with fans, linens, pillows, and plenty of blankets. The kitchen was fully stocked with all the necessities to prepare a wide range of meals and state of the art appliances. The gathering rooms (one on the main floor and one on the lower level) provided ample space to sit and visit, watch TV and unwind comfortably from a fun day on the beach. One of my favorite rooms was the three-season room overlooking the lake. It has lots of cozy spots to settle in and get lost in a good book and it provides an additional space to sit and have a meal.

The Bisbees go above and beyond to ensure that their guests experience a first rate vacation. From your first inquiry to the final thank you and good-bye, the Bisbees are professional, courteous, helpful and timely in every aspect of communication and attention to detail. Upon our arrival we were greeted with a welcome basket and a kind, hand-written note.

We also greatly appreciated the Bisbees taking care to provide the many incidentals necessary for a week on the lake for a large group; such as stocked linens, pillows, beach and bath towels, beach chairs, toilet paper, paper towels, hand soap, dish soap, laundry detergent, trash bags, smore sticks, fire wood, etc. The Bisbee cottage is truly an all-inclusive experience (minus your food and beverages).

The property is as unique as the gorgeous interior of the cottage. A creek runs down the north end of the yard which boasts stately shade trees and bridges and paths to explore; while the southern side has a large, flat yard which is ideal for the many provided outdoor yard games- horse shoes and badminton, to name a few. The beach access is ideal because they have a large bonfire area and there are no stairs.

If quality, beauty, comfort and convenience matter- book with the Bisbees. They will exceed your expectations. :)

Country Comfort with Modern Conveniences

  • 5 of 5

We loved this vacation getaway. The gorgeous setting on Lake Michigan was beautiful and private. I grew up in metro Detroit, but had not visited this area in more than 40 years. Was not disappointed. Particularly pleased that-- beyond the country comfort, we had all of the modern conveniences-- including wireless internet. David and Kathryn could not have been more gracious. A great location for extended families. We waited more than a year for availability. It was worth it.

  • 5 of 5

David & Katryn are the best hosts and have created a beautiful spot to enjoy Lake Michigan & time away with family & friends.

Enjoyed long beach walks, watching bald eagles & herons, swinging &listening to waves & the peaceful creek sounds. Couldn't ask for a better sanctuary & place to relax. Best view in Michigan. Thank you both for sharing with our family!

The property, while providing a great feel of privacy, has close proximity to charming coastal towns.

The closest small towns to Arcadia/Pierport are Onekama to the south with several good restaurants, tennis courts, a library, a bank and the newly opened EZ Mart grocery store. Arcadia is just 5 minutes north and has the Arcadia Bluffs Golf Course (best public course in Michigan) and an excellent restaurant.

Manistee and Frankfort, both with great restaurants, stores and scenic beachfronts are within a 25 minute drive.

Manistee also has a hospital, restored downtown movie theatre, casino, airport with service to Chicago, several large grocery stores and a nice river walk. A 24/7 Meijer store is located just north of Manistee 20 minutes south on US 31 at M-55. Frankfort also has a wonderful local cinema, a hospital, the Gwen Frostic studio and a large grocery store.

About an hour north on M-22 are the Leelanau Peninsula and Sleeping Bear Dunes (voted the most beautiful place in the United States by Good Morning America viewers).

Traverse City is also an hour north with numerous attractions, festivals, theatre, great shopping, excellent restaurants and several multi-screen cinemas. Downtown Traverse City is really a special place for shopping and entertainment. On the way to Traverse City on US 31 is the vintage Cherry Bowl drive-in movie theatre just north of Honor.

There are also several local farm stands on M-22 close to Pierport and weekly farmer's markets in Elberta (Thursday), Onekama (Friday) and Frankfort, Manistee and Traverse City on Saturdays.
