About Sam and Maggi Saunders
That's us, sitting outside our favourite cheap (typical menu €14) restaurant (La Fontaine) in the square very close to our house. We spend about 3-4 months every year in Ceret and probably too much of that time in one of the 27 (at the last count) restaurants the town has! We have 10 grandkids (also at the last count), and many friends and other interests still in the UK, so we spend the rest of the year in Sheffield.
Sam and Maggi Saunders purchased this House in 2004
Why Sam and Maggi Saunders chose Céret
We are outdoor people and wanted a house in France close to both the sea and montains. We wanted too buy in a small town with a market, plenty of boulangeries and restaurants and cafes and atmosphere. That meant Provence (too expensive), or the Atlantic or Mediterranean side of the Pyrenees. We visited the Mediterranean side first, found the little gem that is Ceret and the rest is history.
What makes this House unique
Good WiFi, free calls to landlines (not mobiles) worldwide. Plus our mission statement is to leave the house equipped with the boring necessities of life. Who wants to go on holiday and have to buy toilet rolls, bin liners etc. Who wants a self-catering house where the owners offer a 'starter pack' of 2 dish-washer tablets and one bin-liner? Wouldn't you rather go to a house and find that the owner has left milk and a bottle of chilled rose in the fridge and enough bin liners to last a lifetime?

Bustling little town
Letting ourselves in was simple and the directions given were very good. The house is big and very well appointed and there is sufficient of everything to see you through your stay, including herbs, spices, sugar etc. but it could have done with a good clearout as there was far too much stuff and no idea how old some of it was.
It was lovely to be so close to shops and restaurants, but there is a price to pay, namely that these shops and restaurants need to be re-stocked every day, and they like to do these thing fairly early in the mornin .
We were lucky we could get parked each day in the littlesquare a 50 metre walk from the apartment and all free.
There is a good supply of supermarkets in the area as well, always useful for self catering.
On Saturday there was a market which stretches across quite a few streets and the traders sold a lovely variety of stuff .
All in all, it was a nice stay, but it was incredibly hot the week we were there (last week July) and it would have been nice to have airconditioning, at least in the bedrooms.
Centrally located house.
This house could not be in a better position. Its close to absolutely everything in the lovely town of Ceret. Downstairs is a beautiful kitchen diner which is well equipped and very cool to retreat to after the heat from outside.
The bedrooms are lovely and each has a fax, much needed for our stay when they was a heatwave.
Excellent stay in Ceret
I had an excellent stay at this property with my husband and our two children (ages 5 and 2) when we traveled to France from Canada. The property was exactly what we were hoping for-clean, well maintained and most importantly for us right in the middle of the old town. There is a large car park that is only a couple minutes walk to the property (which is on a pedestrian street), cafes and restaurants are only steps away from the front door.
Ceret itself is lovely and very easy to get to off the main motorway. We enjoyed being tourists in this great village! It also meant it was a great place for us to take family day trips to the beach, other French towns and into Spain.
Sam and Maggi (the owners) were a pleasure to communicate with. They went above and beyond to ensure we had a wonderful holiday. They obviously love this village and want to ensure their guests have a great time, too!
I would most definitely recommend this property and we will certainly stay here again if we are back in the area!
Cozy and Charming!
Staying in this charming four-story apartment - in the heart of this sweet little French town - enhanced the wonderful experience we had in Ceret. The winding greenery and lavender shutters on the outside were picture-perfect and standouts on the street. The kitchen was very well-equipped; and the winding stone stairways added to the authenticity. The master bath was large and comfortable, and the fab fourth-floor living room made us want to throw a party. we loved feeling like locals and would highly recommend this beautiful place!
Thanks for the great review Len. We are delighted you and Dee Dee had a good holiday. We are not surprised you enjoyed your time in Céret: it is a rather magical little town. We bought the house almost fourteen years ago and we never tire of going back. You will both be welcome to return anytime. Regards Sam and Maggi.
Fantastic family holiday - enjoyed Ceret lifestyle and house is great
The house was an attraction in itself with many people taking photos - very pretty with flowering climbers and flowers at the windowsill. The house is equipped with everything you should need including much needed fans at night, every kitchen/dining utensil, Netflix which was great for the kids for films some evenings and a fab newly decorated bathroom and very easy to feel at home. It has 2 Boulangeries within a mins walk. We loved exploring the town in the evening and sampling beers and sangria in the local bars while listening to various live music. The house is in the centre of it all but down an alleyway that means it is quieter apart from when there is music in the bar opposite. A good excuse to try their tapas and beers! Our 3 children, aged 12, 14 and 18 enjoyed the pedalos at the lake at St Jean, the beach at Racou. We had a day trip to Gerona and collioure. The highlights were "easy" canyoning at Gorges de Galamus with Action Aventure and swimming at Duilhac sous Peyrepeteuse and an overnight stay in Carcassonne on our way back to Toulouse. Thankyou for a fab holiday and all the thought you gave with your recommendations and accommodating us with changing travel arrangements. We hope to be back some day.
Thank you for your kind words! We love our Ceret home (we stay there for about 4 months of the year) and enjoy sharing our favourite places in and around the town with our guests. You will be welcome back!
Had a great time
Had a terrific time in Ceret. Sam and Maggie were in town so we got lots of good tips. There was a big festival on so the town was very lively. The house was spotless and the starter pack was much appreciated. Great location and lots to do and see. We will be back hopefully.
There are many sandy beaches within an easy car drive. Argeles, the nearest, is 30min away. There are lakes within 10 min where you can swim, use a pedalo or a bungee trampoline, picnic or buy lunch at an inexpensive lakeside cafe. There is large water fun park (Aqualand) near St Cyprien.
You can buy fish straight from the boats in St Cyprian and Port Vendres. Visit Collioure - a coastal village that inspired many impressionists.
Perpignan has a medieval centre, good shopping and the Palace of the Kings of Majorca.
If you enjoyed the ‘Da Vinci Code visit a Cathar castle. The one at Carcassonne is only 90mins by car.
There are many outdoor activities such as walking in the local hills (Les Alberes) or further afield (Mt Canigou). Windsurfing, Paragliding and canyon descending are possible.
In N Spain there are sandy beaches along the Gulf of Roses, coastal walks along the Cap de Creus, beautiful medieval Girona and of course Barcelona.
Other Activities: Cathar history trail, routes des vins,
