About the host
Hosted by Sian Johnson
The Beach House has been in my family for over 25 years, while our family's relationship with the area goes back another 35 years to the very early years of development in Watamu.
I was in the hospitality industry for many years having founded a very successful nightclub in London, which bloomed into several iterations around the world. I have designed or established restaurants and nightclubs in over a dozen locations as diverse as Panama City and Dubai, or Ibiza and Glasgow.
My younger brother was a well known racing driver in the 1970's and 1980's, competing in Formula 1, the Indy 500 and long distance sport cars. Some of his memorabilia occupies the house.
My elder brother and father ran two airlines throughout the latter half of the 20th century, including operating the first all inclusive charters into Kenya in the 1960's.
My brothers and I first discovered Mayungu Beach in the 1960's as children, and fell in love with it then, and I remain in love with it now. As our mother used to say, it has a wide horizon, and that lets you explore the horizons in your mind at will.
Somebody really ought to write a book there one day.

Why they chose this property
We acquired the estate over 25 years ago and slowly developed The Beach House from a 1970's ruin. It was the only building on the entire beach in those days.
Mayungu remains the only largely undeveloped beach between Malindi and Watamu, and what has been developed makes it one of the most upscale beaches on the entire coast.
Private, undisturbed and yet within easy reach of both Malindi and Watamu.

What makes this property unique
The Beach House is one of very few houses on the North Coast which is actually built out onto the beach. This gives the property a unique relationship with the sand and ocean, making it a spectacular destination for those looking for something a little unusual.
It is a fabulous location for parties, with few neighbours to disturb. It lends itself well to boat trips and picnics on the sandbar islands, which appear at low tide or long walks on a near deserted white sand beach.
The house and estate are very private and occupy 10 acres at the north end of Mayungu Beach, which extends largely unbroken from the fishing village of Mayungu to Watamu, 10 kms to the south. We have two noted beach side restaurants within 5 mins of the house.
Mayungu Beach is protected by the reef system which itself continues down the coast past Watamu, and it is this relationship which makes the Marine Park some of the best scuba diving and snorkelling in Africa. Outside the Marine Park it offers some of the best sport fishing on the planet.
Apart from a very few boutique hotels, and one other private house, our beach is almost completely undeveloped. We are not a tourist beach, we are a working beach, with fishermen, shell collectors and cows out numbering the tourists 10 to 1.
The house is permanently staffed by Rehema, Ali and Samuel. Supplemented by Fatima and Hussein when we have larger groups of guests. Rehema, our housekeeper, can organise visiting services from massages and beauty treatments to fishing trips and motor cycles for you. Ali can organise getting you just about anything, from running errands which he loves doing to having a particular type of flower in your room. Just ask him. The staff are backed up by Monster, Fang & Daisy our house dogs. Pets are very welcome, by the way.
If you like being undisturbed, having a beach to yourself, and whiling away the day contemplating the universe this is the destination for you, but its not for everybody.
