We had the loveliest stay at Greyscott! We were lucky enough to catch snow while we were there, and it was the perfect spot to be snowed in for the day! The beds were comfy, we had everything we needed, enjoyed the games, and they even provided delicious coffee complete with half & half. Loved the stonework, natural wood countertops, and eclectic art work. Even better than expected and we will definitely stay again! Hosts were exceptionally kind! :)
I almost don’t want others to find out what a gem this is! The hosts were so responsive and made sure we had what we needed. The thought put into the small touches and notes around the space made all the difference in comparison to other rentals I’ve been in.It’s a perfect place for a couple, or even those with kiddos as the sleeping nook was a HUGE hit with my 14 year old niece. The location is central to all this Asheville. This will be the 1st place I’d look at booking the next time we travel to Asheville.

We had a great stay! Hosts were, friendly and accommodating making everything easy and comfortable including a late check-in due to delayed flight. Conveniently located close to Asheville attractions and Warren Wilson College where we were visiting our daughter. Highly recommend!

The accommodations themselves were very nice—clean, comfortable, and overall a pleasant place to stay. However, there were a couple things that weren’t clear in the listing. It wasn’t disclosed that the owners would be on site during our stay, which made the experience feel less private than we expected. The listing also stated there was a washer and dryer in the unit, but they were actually behind a locked door and required contacting the owner to access them. Neither issue ruined the stay, but having those details disclosed ahead of time would have helped us set expectations.

Hi Sage,
Thank you for your feedback.
Having dedicated parking and private entrance behind the house as well as the listing stating it is a “light filled basement homestay apartment,” guests have understood we live upstairs.
Also, we make a point not to make noise after 9pm and often retreat to our bedroom, which is in another part of the house, over the garage.
We’ve also amended the listing to clarify the ease of laundry access…which any guest can use, with a simple text.
For future guests:
We pride ourselves in guests having total privacy, while being extremely responsive to any needs when contacted.

Great little place! Cute and cozy, good location and lovely communicative owners. Would have been a five star except for the crickets and spiders that came into the place every evening. But this is due to it being fall and a basement apartment. Just more than we could handle.

Yes, as soon as the weather turns cold, everything tries to come inside. Lol

About the host
Hosted by Meka & David
Meka has been in Asheville since 2004. He is a full-time massage therapist, working from home and at the Asheville Salt Cave downtown. Since 1995, he has also made his livelihood consulting and teaching Natural Building systems such as Adobe, Cob, and Straw-bale, locally and around the world...with a specialty in wood fired ovens and Rumford fireplaces. David is a Sales Manager for a privately owned Sales Group in the Pet Industry. We both enjoy puttering around the property (Meka was a Permaculture landscape gardener for 7 years; David loves to tend the gardens and maintain the home and grounds. GrayScott is our home and we hope you will love it too.
Why they chose this property
On our first walk through of this 1942 house, we entered through the basement (what is now the Garden Suite), and were immediately enchanted by the 15" thick stone foundation walls and fireplace. We were looking for a fixer upper with good bones and discovered good bones AND teeth! We did all the demolition and were hands on in the renovation process from start to finish. The house has all new electrical, plumbing, and central air system.
What makes this property unique
The apartment is a one of a kind labor of love. Meka spent 5 months doing the renovation, adding unique features and special touches to the space. We strive to make sure it is clean and inviting for all who stay with us...even providing fresh ground local coffee and half & half, shower and hand soaps, and tissues/toilet paper. As avid outdoor people, we hand built the stone wall running the length of the house and are continually creating new planting beds for expanding the garden. Our goal is to create a lush food forest for visitors to enjoy. So far, the edible gardens have fruit & nut trees, berries, native and medicinal herbs, shitake mushroom logs, and seasonal vegetables.
