About Jane Jenkins Herlong

I am a humorist, singer, recording artist and published author. My husband works with New York Life in Retirement and Estate Planning. We have two children at Clemson University and have a Christian home.

Jane Jenkins Herlong purchased this house in 1963

Why Jane Jenkins Herlong chose Johns Island

My father bought this beautiful plantation (Hut) after finally having a good year on the farm. My parents were so proud as we all were to have this 4-bedroom, 5- bath very comfortable vintage brick home. We love being on the water and enjoy our new floating dock. The thrity live oak trees are magnificent and only one mile to the Chas. Executive airport. You can travel to with down-town Charleston or Kiawah and Seabrook Islands in just 20 minutes. It is the best of both worlds!

What makes this house unique

Fishing, crabbing, water activities, nature, restful or wanting to visit Historic Charleston, this house is perfect enjoying the peaceful Lowcountry or discovering the treasures of Charleston. It is a complete Lowcountry Southern experience with fabulous Gullah cooking by local island women. So close to Kiawah, Folly Beach and Seabrook Island plus only one mile from the Executive Airport. Perfect hide-a-way or get-a-way!

Great family vacation home

  • 4 of 5

If you are traveling with a big family, multi families, parents with adult children or like our situation, a family with a senior parent, this is the perfect house. There is a master down stairs with its own full bath, 2 half baths downstairs, a second master upstairs with its own full bath, 2 more bedrooms and another full bath upstairs. There is plenty of room to come together and yet plenty of privacy. The kitchen is stocked, the house is clean and the internet wss surprisingly fast for a rural area. For us, the setting was a bonus, open view of Hutt creek and the marsh which leads out to the inner coastal. Quiet, serene and beautiful sunrises which we enjoyed on the screened porch every morning. While there are many reviews about events held at Hutt plantation, any family would enjoy this home. The location makes it easy to be downtown or at Folly Beach in around 25 minutes and Johns Island while "rural" has plenty of grocery stores and FANTASTIC restaurants!!!

Jane take great pride in her home, welcomes guest like you are family and answers emails quickly. The Hutt plantation and Jenkins family have a long history on Johns Island and you really feel that when you stay at the house.

Perfect for Wedding and Entire Wedding Weekend

  • 5 of 5

We had a great wedding under the beautiful trees on a Saturday afternoon as well as a great rehearsal on Friday night. It was perfect in everyway and everyone had a great time. There was always cool breezes too, which was so nice in June. Some of us also stayed in the house and that was also great! And the owner was always responsive and helpful in everyway!

Beautiful property for a quiet family retreat.

  • 4 of 5

The Hut is completely relaxing, quiet, and peaceful. We thoroughly enjoyed spending time on the screened porch visiting, and enjoying uninterrupted time together. Away from the busy downtown area, it provided a perfect place for our family when our daughter was married at Wingate Plantation. Jane was very helpful in answering questions, and making sure we had anything needed to make our stay pleasant.

Great family home away from home

  • 5 of 5

Finding this place was an answered prayer because we had major problems with the place we first booked. The owner is a true Southern lady who helped us by calming my nerves and making sure our stay at her property was something I did not have to worry about. She went above and beyond what she had to because that is just who she is. This property is so peaceful and beautiful. The house is older (has not been updated) but it is VERY CLEAN and we even felt comfortable enough to cook family style breakfasts every day and a birthday supper celebration one night. My husband and nephew enjoyed fishing right on the property and my mother, father and I enjoyed walking under the beautiful large oaks. I have stayed in Charleston on several occasions but this was a unique experience away from the tourists and hustle. It has a master bedroom and bathroom on the first level and a master bedroom and bathroom upstairs. There are no king size beds but that can be a good thing sometimes. Perfect for those in Charleston for an event at The Island House or any other event on Johns island or James Island as you don't have the traffic getting to or from your event. Absolutely a gem of a find! So thankful to this wonderful family who own this property for taking such good care and pride in it ( and for sharing it!! ).

A Little Bit Of Heaven on Johns Island

  • 5 of 5

A visit to this clean and well-maintained home is a wonderful introduction to southern charm. The many bedrooms, spacious kitchen and den area and screened back porch allow for relaxation for a few and entertainment of family and friends. The stately oaks and view of the waterway invite one to enjoy the lowcountry with the beach at Kiawah Island only minutes away and the history of downtown Charleston only a short drive. Whether one chooses to cook or dine elsewhere, the grocery stores, restaurants and lowcountry foods are most convenient. The most difficult part about leaving this home is that it is a home and the lowcountry charm captures your spirit and beckons one to return.
