ABOUT THE SAND AND THE EVER CHANGING BEACH: In the spring, the tide begins to carry sand in from the ocean and deposit it on the beach. The sand on the beach becomes deeper each week and by late summer can be several feet deep. During the winter, the process is reversed. The tide carries the sand back out to the ocean. At times, there can be no sand on the beach exposing cobble (football sized rocks ordinarily covered by sand) which can be difficult to walk on.

About Don Tollefson

I started out as a high school teacher in 1968. After 4 years I stopped that nonsense (it was a great job for which I wasn't suited) and went to law school. I passed the bar in 1979 and became an attorney (another great job for which I wasn't suited). That same year started a construction company. All along the way I bought property (back in the beginning property was cheap). In 2008 I added the vacation rental business. I still don't know what I'm going to be when I grow up. My insight? 'Youth is wasted on the young!'

Why Don Tollefson chose Eastern Malibu

As a young man I never had much money (still don't). So even though property was cheap, I could only afford distress property and/or property in downtrodden areas. I mostly bought property in a nearby slum area called Venice (where I live to this day). I bought this particular Malibu vacation rental property as a distress property. It was in the Big Rock Mesa slide area. The slide area was a quarter mile section along the coast that was sliding aggressively toward Catalina Island. I gambled and it all worked out. Because the County stabilized the slide and everyone knows what happened in Venice. People tell me I was smart. But, I wasn't smart. I was lucky. My insight? If you have a choice between lucky and smart, pick lucky.

What makes this townhome unique

I'm 'unfamiliar places' and 'new things challenged.' Being thus 'challenged,' I'm aware of the frustrations that can accompany a vacation. So, I set things up so vacationers can 'hit the ground running.' My photos are unembellished. My video is unembellished. My booking process is dunce level simple. My follow up is compulsive every step of the way. I'm always accessible by phone, text or email. I provide a comprehensive printout for arrival. I've labeled light switches, fans, heaters and remote controls. I oversee cleaning. I oversee every turnover. I make certain everything is re-stocked, fully equipped and working. I refund security deposits promptly and make certain they clear. And I offer a 'repeat offender' discount for returning vacationers. My insight? It must be working because 25% of my vacationers are 'repeat offenders.'

Ocean Lovers Dream House

This was the perfect beach house vacation for us. We loved being so close to the ocean all day and especially at night. We also come out to California during Northeast winters for sunshine and light, which we got plenty of through the full wall of glass facing the ocean. The place is both sublime and serene. As for the beach house itself, everything we needed was included in the vacation rental package. We prepared and ate meals at the beach house and found the kitchen stocked very well with pots, pans, dishes, cutlery, drinking glasses, and so forth. And the location was perfect. We know the area and were within minutes of all of the things we like to do when we're in Southern California. Plenty of markets nearby in Malibu as well as a post office, several banks, a health & wellness store, restaurants, Starbucks, beaches, and canyon views. Importantly, Don, provided thorough instructions for arrival, including a video, that made checking in a breeze. We arrived after dark and found the beach house lit and welcoming. Don came by later and introduced himself. We found him to be kind, friendly, focused, available, and professional. We loved our stay and hope to return.

Beach Paradise!

Spectacular Ocean and Beach experience

We had a fabulous time at WOG. The ocean and beach are right at your doorstep, providing an enveloping show for you all day, every day. Dolphins, seals, and a grey whale added to the fun. The beach is about a mile long when the tide is out, and walking it was a treat every day. All the other reviews are right on the money. Our favorite restaurants were Moonshadows, Ollo, and Duke's. Downtown LA is about 20-30 minutes away, and we did all the touristy things, but coming back to the ocean and beach was the best part of every day. Don, thank you for being such a great host.

Beachfront heaven

We've stayed in Malibu 3 times already and have decided to make this our annual trip. We've done all beachfront and this was our first time at WOG. There's no better place for a relaxing vacation than being "on the beach". We stayed in the bottom unit and while the place itself is a little outdated, the amenities and location make up for it. Our girls stayed in the 2nd bedroom and it was a little stuffy, however, they got the updated new 2nd bathroom. We got to see seals, dolphins and meet Fred. One of the things I look for in a beachfront property is 1) the private beach and 2) how much sand there is. Although I know the tide determines a lot of that, there are some properties that are beachfront but they are not walkable due to the large rocks. This was not that. We throughly enjoyed our daily beach walks. If you are coming for the beach, you're going to love keeping the doors open to the bedroom to feel the breeze, hear the waves at night and wake up to amazing view. Don was extremely prompt in answering my questions and obtaining my security deposit. We also loved the hot water outdoor shower and TWO washer and dryers. Coming home with clean clothes was a bonus. We are planning next years trip already so we will be back. Hopefully we can make it a 2 week stay! If you are looking for a comfortable, decent place with a 5 star view, you will not be disappointed.

It was built on pilings in 1946. I update and remodel every chance I get. But, at 97% occupancy (25% of whom are "repeat offenders") I'll probably have to do a "forced shut down" lol!
