Red cat house vacation apartment for couples

Bedrooms 1
Property type apartment
Minimum Stay 1 - 3 nights

About the property

A wonderful little downtown apartment for couples or singles...

Red Cat House is a one of a kind vacation rental apartment in Taos. When inquiring about vacation accommodations in town, an often asked question is 'Are you walking distance from the Plaza?' Red Cat House is unique in that it across the street from the Historic Taos Plaza. In fact there are Plaza, town and mountain views from every window. This apartment offers convenience combined with a peaceful and quiet, spacious yet cozy, home away from home for two.

Red Cat House is located on Dona Luz Lane, 'The Garden Street of Taos' (landscaped by me, a professional landscaper) This street boasts a wonderful variety of shops and restaurants. It was once the 'Red Light District' in town and La Dona Luz was a madame. Most of the shops are women owned and we call ourselves 'The Ladies of Dona Luz'. I have a shop on the street. Red Cat Melissiana, two doors away It is a shop filled with a little bit of everything as long as it is fun and unusual- gifts, local folkart

Entry is down a little brick pathway surrounded by blooming plants with original outdoor art on all walls and an outdoor seating area. Upstairs is Red Cat House-a wonderful intimate world of its own. You will discover antiques, color and light, original art and whimsical touches in your own private little world.

The sunny eat in kitchen is well equipped for morning coffee, a gourmet breakfast or a romantic dinner for two.

The living room is a perfect spot for lounging with a comfortable couch, lamps, a flat screen TV, DVD's, books and a selection of music for just that right mood. Enjoy dinner at an 18th century walnut tilt top table for two looking out over the Plaza with a view of Taos Mountain in the distance. If you need to do a little work (not too much I hope), there is high speed internet available and a desk where you can write about your wonderful Taos adventures or even compose a spontaneous love poem. Many of my guests enjoy my record player and collection of albums.

The sunlight bathroom has a large shower, lots of towels, robes for two and some fun touches to discover.

The bedroom is so very special with an antique queen size, pillow top, four post teak canopy bed, down comforter, fine linens and lots of pillows. Hang your clothes in a tall mirrored English oak armoire. The bedroom is cozy with a gas log stove. The multi paned windows are screened to allow you to enjoy our wonderful mountain air that just invites snuggling-so cozy and romantic.

If you can tear yourselves away from the comforts of Red Cat House, all of Taos is just outside your door. You are within easy walking distance of all Historic District shops, restaurants, galleries and museums. You may browse the many guides and menus found in the apartment or just ask me for suggestions about 'All Things Taos'. Ask me where to go for live music and special events during your stay so you can meet folks who enjoy life and all the richness Taos has to offer. I enjoy sharing the charms and stories of our town with visitors.

Red Cat House has so much to offer. This is a little slice of Paradise in Taos-the perfect vacation spot you will always remember.

p.s. No significant other at the moment? Red Cat House is a perfect solo vacation spot too.

PLEASE NOTE: Even if my calendar shows a reservation for your dates take a look at Vrbo 513557 or Vrbo 598600. Both are similar apartments on the same street.

About Melissa /Taos mgr.

I own two shops on the street where The Red Cat House apartment is located. Red Cat Melissiana is a bit of everything--fun and unique. Red Cat For Her is a lingerie/gift shop. The Red Cat House is above the lingerie store.

Melissa /Taos mgr. purchased this apartment in 2012

Why Melissa /Taos mgr. chose New Mexico

The first time I saw this apartment I saw the potential for a wonderful vacation rental. It is cozy yet spacious and the location can't be beat. I receive so many compliments on my two other vacation rentals in town for my taste and sense of zany style and I love to garden so the combination of the apartment and the front garden was something I could not resist. This could become the most popular apartment in town! Everyone who sees it (including me) wants to move in!

What makes this apartment unique

I love the spacious, yet intimate feel. I love the way my eclectic taste with the furnishings (high end antiques, rustic, country and New Mexican pieces) All the art is original with great variety. I love all the nouances and fun, little touches to be found throughout the space.

Then there is the location--right in the heart of town and just across the street from the Plaza.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Lucy, thanks so much for your enthusiastic review. I am so glad you were so pleased with your accommodations at my Red Cat House apartment for your Christmas visit. It truly is a delightful place to stay in Taos. This is a great street. As you mentioned you stayed above Substance Clothing for Women and I'm glad you spent time in my shop Red Cat Melissiana for your lingerie and flower purchases. If you return in the summer, you will enjoy all the gardens I plant on the street. Your little courtyard is especially beautiful. Melissa

Owner's Response: Thanks for your review. Yes this is a perfect location for guests who want to walk everywhere downtown. I realize an increasing number of guests choose vacation rentals over hotels or B & B's because you do have the option of cooking as much or as little as you desire. I pride myself on my well equipped kitchens.

Home Away From Home

  • 5 of 5

We've stayed a lot of places around Taos & this ranks up there with some of the earthships, but with the Plaza in view just a block away. The apartment is so pleasant you can be tempted to not even go out. There's a full kitchen with lots of kitchenware if you want to cook. There were only two drawbacks that were pretty easy to overcome. The evaporative cooling units ended up making it very humid while registering a temperature of 91°, hotter than outside (87°), so just don't use them. I turned them off, opened the windows & it cooled rapidly to 'warm but comfortable' as you would expect in shade & low humidity. The only other drawback was some inevitable traffic noise at night owing to the favorable location & the open windows. I always have earplugs handy just in case & slept fine once I put them in. Note these tips & you should have a great time. I'd definitely stay at Red Cat House again.

Owner's Response: First of all thank you for your 5 star review! I do work hard with decorating and equipping all ten of my properties and the Red Cat House is one of my most popular. That said a temperature of 91 degrees is intolerable and beyond unacceptable!!! When I saw this comment I called the company that makes the evaporative coolers ie swamp coolers. I was not very nice. I have a dozen of their coolers and do NOT expect them to make a unit feel like a swamp! I bought them for summer cooling. They ask me if I tell guests to crack a window open when using swamp cooler? News to me and nowhere in their literature either. I am now writing up this information to all future guests.

Very cute, romantic apartment -- awesome location!

  • 4 of 5

The Red Cat House was wonderful! The location could not be better and the house is just as advertised. As we heard from folks around the Plaza, the two days we were in Taos were two of the hottest yet, so we did miss a little A/C in the afternoons. But having said that if we kept the swamp coolers filled with water and ice it did help a bit, and after the sun went down and we opened windows it cooled down very quick. We loved everything about Taos, great hike up to Williams Lake, great breakfast on the patio at Bent Street Cafe and so much fun walking around the Farmers Market on Saturday morning! We definitely plan on returning to Taos someday, and would stay here again for sure!

Owner's Response: Hi Thanks for your review. I'm so glad you enjoyed the apartment, location and your Taos adventures. Thanks for mentioning the swamp coolers. I used to find ceiling fans and screened operable windows were sufficient. However, now that most of us believe that summers are getting hotter I invested in swamp coolers for all ten of my properties and find it makes a big difference. I make sure coolers are filled with ice and water the day of arrival and leave extra ice in the freezer for guests. So far it is working well. Yes you were in Taos at the peak of that heat wave. We are not used to high nineties and few if any folks here have central AC. Do come back and visit again.

The apartment was excellent, great location and nice vibe!

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed staying. The apartment is nicely set out above a row of shops, and entered to through a delightful green garden. It's very close to some great restaurants, and right next to the Taos Plaza. The facilities are good and clean, and there are some free standing air-conditioners for the hot days. The WiFi played up, but Melissa Serfling, the ever helpful owner, had it replaced by the end of the week and let us use her computer in the evening in the meantime (her office is downstairs). Taos and the surrounding region is an amazingly beautiful place, with a lot to see and do, and we would recommend it and the apartment to anyone thinking about a holiday in New Mexico.
