Your own ranch with endless views & activities near Jackson Hole

Bedrooms 5
Space 5,000 sq ft
Property type lodge
Minimum Stay 0 - 3 nights

About the property

A house and property big enough for your family or corporate

Enjoy your own private dude ranch vacation in the heart of the West, an hour from Jackson Hole, Wyoming and 1.5 hours from Grand Teton National Park. Butch Cassidy and his infamous gang once visited this historic ranch—with an original homesteaders barn dating back to 1870s. The spacious 5,000-square-foot, 4-bedroom (not including a sleeping loft), 3-bath lodge-style home has enough room for 14. It has a spacious kitchen, large dining room, perfect kid sleeping quarters, and a game room with ping -pong and pool.

But the real action is outside the lodge’s front door.

Bordering the Caribou National Forest, with miles of trails, you can explore the 2,200-acre property (600 acres of BLM land) on horseback or ATV (with local connections for rentals) or by foot. Fish more than 3 miles of Lane’s Creek, or practice your fishing skills (and take a dip) at the spring-fed, trout stocked pond. Enjoy the wide-open views and wildflowers by day, cook outside on the grill, soak in the hot tub, and sit under the stars and roast marshmallows by one of the outdoor fire pits by night. Leave the ranch for golf in nearby Star Valley, and visit Jackson Hole for world-class recreation, shopping, and dining. This is your chance to customize your own private guest ranch vacation and spend some quality time with friends and family.

Why Bret King chose Freedom

1,600 acres bordered by National Forest will give you and yours plenty of elbow room to enjoy the great outdoors. You can ride horses and ATVs right on the ranch or in the forest, spot wildlife or plentiful hawks and eagles from the cabin deck, enjoy the wide-open views from the outdoor hot tub or just sit and relax with no interruptions from the outside world.

If you have riders, including young ones, who want to learn to ride, we have an outdoor riding arena that makes riders feel safer and more secure. This is where our own kids and grandkids learn to ride. For the more adventurous, try your hand at steer roping. Local cowboys and cowgirls come to our place a couple times every week to practice for the local rodeos and you are welcome to watch or join in.

You can bring your own horses or ATV's or we can help arrange for some for you.

Just down the road a piece is beautiful Star Valley, Wyoming with blue-ribbon trout fishing and golf at 4 different golf courses, all reasonably priced. Or head into Jackson Hole with its world class recreation and beauty for the Grand Tetons, Snake River and shopping and restaurants. Hire a guide and fish the local river and streams or, if you have the experience, rent your own raft and do either a scenic float trip or experience the thrill of a white water run.

We have a ranch manager who lives on the ranch about a half mile from the main house. He'll be there to help you with anything you might need, including leading an evening horse ride if you like.

You'll have no end to the activities (or solitude, if you prefer) if you are staying at the Lanes Creek Ranch. We have enjoyed this property ourselves for many years and our children, and now grandchildren, have great memories from our time here and now we're willing to share with you.

Deeply quiet and restful; close to many recreational opportunities without the crowds

  • 5 of 5

A wonderful property. Bret and Susan make you feel welcome. Pictures don't do the house justice. It's open and airy and fits all those people easily. Huge kitchen that's well stocked--no need to bring a spatula. Extremely peaceful. Wake up to cows mooing and sandhill cranes honking. Close enough to Jackson to get some town time in if you'd like. Easy to get a day trip in to the Grand Tetons. Also only ten minutes to Grey's Lake National Wildlife Refuge for birders. Bald eagles, sandhill cranes, prairie falcons and many ducks in mid-August.

We rented ATVs and they really are necessary to fully enjoy the property since it's so big. The adjacent national forest access gave miles of additional dirt trails to explore. Kids also had so much fun fishing on the property's pond. One boy caught a twenty inch rainbow and I don't think that he's stopped smiling since.

They only travel consideration is food. We pre-made and froze many meals (we were there for six days) so that we didn't have to drive into the nearest town for groceries. If you are out and about every day in the area this may not be an issue.

The surprising aspect of the area is the incredible fishing nearby. Our friends fished on the Salt River with a local guide (via two good fishing stores in Alpine, WY) and scared up a cow moose and saw a weasel. We also paddle boarded on the reservoir next to Alpine. Other days were just spent quietly enjoying the property. My only regret is that we didn't have room to bring our mountain bikes--they would've been great to have.

Night time brought the stars. They drip from the sky. Watching them from the hot tub was the highlight of every night. Several chipmunks kept us company too.

Overall, a fantastic place. My son wants to come back every summer "from now on!"

A truly revitalizing experience

  • 5 of 5

Staying at the Ranch was amazing and I actually consider it a life changing experience for my wife and I, as we truly appreciated our time there and look forward to returning soon. It is really difficult to describe in words just how beautiful and majestic this ranch is, so I will simply say to have to see it to believe it. This place is a gem. Bret, Thank you for allowing us to stay on your incredible ranch, we can't wait to return with friends so we can share the experience with them too.

For perspective:

I have traveled around the world for work and pleasure and have experienced some amazing places, but at the end of every trip I have always looked forward to returning home and sleeping in my own bed. After staying at the ranch I had no such feeling (I did not want to leave). This is something that I have never experienced before and it has resonated with me ever since we left. The views were magnificent, the wildlife was everywhere, the sky is huge, the stars are bright, and the air is clean and crisp. This is paradise.

Summary of the stay

Starting with the location, its close enough to Jackson you can enjoy the Tetons and Yellowstone but far enough to get away from the crowds when you want. The property is so large it takes a few days to explore it and it even has private access to Caribou National Park which has great hiking! The house is beautiful and located on a bluff so that the views from every room in the house are breathtaking. A BBQ grill, hot tub, sprawling deck, and fire pit kept us busy every day!

Bret (the owner) was very accommodating, accessible and helpful. The property and house were clean and well maintained and fit for a Norman Rockwell painting.

Tom (the ranch hand) was also so welcoming and really made us feel like we were in our own home. If you want to find a place to get away from the everyday grind of work for family time or to escape for a relaxing weekend then look no further!

Thank you for allowing us to experience this!

The open space and beautiful surroundings were amazing. Our family had a great time and we were all sad to leave. I would recommend getting an ATV or at least a mountain bike to take advantage of the miles of trails on the property and the beautiful national forest surrounding it. The owners and manager were friendly and very helpful. Thanks for a wonderful week.

Gorgeous Country!

  • 5 of 5

We held our family reunion here and loved the solitude and peace that this place provided. No phones or computers helped us to bond and enjoy each others company. We rode horses and ATV. The grandkids loved riding bikes and having the wide open area to explore. If you want to have a get-away that provides beautiful views, this is the place!
