“…a great base for us to see everything we wanted to see…”
Guests: Lori & Kay, Toronto Ontario
Dates of stay: July 16-23, 2016
Thank you for creating such a perfect home for us in this part of Newfoundland. It was a great base for us to see everything we wanted to see, but it was also a seductive home that constantly lured us to just sit and watch the boats, or in Kaz’s case, draw them! We cooked here most nights and found everything we needed. We also appreciated the laundry as we had been on the road for more than a week when we got here. Thanks for the perfect vacation spot.
P.S. A special shout out to David for the fresh cod. It was delicious!
“We are saddened to leave.”

Thank you so much for arranging for us to stay at Shorelark by the Sea Lower Nest. Your place is amazing! Everything we needed and more! The place is decorated and appointed to give a relaxing, serene, calm place to come back to after a day of sight-seeing. We absolutely loved looking out over the harbour from the deck–and the wind when the wind was howling. Your attention to detail shows in every touch–loved the bedroom light fixture! We will definitely recommend this place to anyone travelling to Petty Harbour.
“We enjoyed staying in an actual fishing village…perfectly situated and perfectly charming.”
Guests: Linda & John, Hallowell, Maine, USA
Dates of stay: May 24–29, 2016
Shorelark by the Sea is aptly named. This is a cozy and well-supplied nest with a captivating view of the harbor and the rocky cliffs. We enjoyed staying in an actual fishing village–meeting and talking with members of the community and fellow travellers to the area. Everyone we met was friendly and informative. In addition to enjoying the immediate area, we were easily able to explore out-lying areas, returning to ‘nest’ for a peaceful nights’ rest–perfectly situated and perfectly charming.

David and I have loved Petty Harbour for years and had a yearning to live in this beautiful little village. Even before we knew each other - we would both come to sit at the same spot separately, by ourselves, and daydream about that possibility. Even though we are both well acquainted with many areas of the world - there is nowhere else we would rather live. The beauty is stunning and ever changing 365 days a year and we hope to share this little gem with you!
Karen purchased this cottage in 2012
The beauty of Petty Harbour amazes us every day, every season and we constantly marvel at the fact that we get to live here.
We know you will feel the same about Petty Harbour and ShoreLark by the Sea rentals! We have done everything we can think of to ensure you have a relaxing comfortable stay. We take immense pride in making sure your little home away from home is immaculate and the only thing you need to do upon arrival - is relax and take in the spectacular views. Speaking of which - We do have THE best views in the area - hands down!
When we decided to build both our current home with ShoreLark Guest House on ground level and our ShoreLark Nests in the blue Salt Box down the road we wanted to respect the traditonal quality of the surrounding homes. We kept our design basic and uncomplicated.
When doing the interior decorating we took great pains to provide exactly what was needed to keep the focus on the unrivaled scenery. We have one of the best views in Petty Harbour! In the Nests you can see, hear and smell the ocean from the kitchen, living and bedroom windows and of course the large private decks!
The decor is comprised of a pristine and calming collection which emphasizes spaciousness within the 500 sq feet. Glass paneled pocket doors allow maximum use of space and provides beautiful natural light in every room.
Our Martha Stewart kitchens have everything you need! The electric fireplace is perfect for taking the chill off and is so cute everyone comments on it!
The EQ3 sofa/chaise lounge is perfect for two to snuggle up on. We have high quality 12 inch memory gel foam mattresses that our guests have a remarkable nights sleep on.
Our linens are lovely high TC 100% cotton. David says: Our Nests are like Nan's around the Bay ...if Nan was an interior decorator! ShoreLark Nests are marvelous warm, cozy, uncluttered cottage-style units that will make your visit to Newfoundland memorable.
Our ShoreLark Guest House is a fabulous fully furnished 1400 sq feet of Retro Flair!
There's a HUGE private veranda to sit on and have and amazing cup of coffee while watching the entire Harbour and ocean sparkle in it's morning glory!
At night the sun going down lights the sky up and deepens the blue of the sea...a contrast not to be easily forgotten. The interior is modern, clean and fresh - everything you need for an overnight or an extended work stay. We put in an den for just that purpose!
A large sleek fireplace makes the ambiance perfect for a glass of wine after dinner.
“Our second stay at Shorelark…”
Dates of stay: September 3–10, 2016
Thanks again Karen & David. Our second stay at Shorelark in Petty Harbour! Everything was wonderful!
My husband Josh and I have had the pleasure of staying at Shorelark on two separate occasions. One being in the lower nest and the next on the upper nest. Karen was such a great person to communicate with, helping with any questions we had and even giving us suggestions on what her and David's favourite places to dine are. Newfoundland was always on the top of my wish list of places to travel. Staying in Petty Harbour at the Shorelark really was like the icing on the cake. Waking up and sitting on the deck with a coffee in hand looking over the harbour and ocean was almost like a dream come true. We loved it so much, we came back 3 years later. During this time we enjoyed seeing my very first iceberg, saw a mother and baby seal in the next cove over, and watched whales in the harbour from the deck. Thanks for allowing us to stay in such a sweet little retreat in a gem of a location. We look forward to our next visit.
The best thing that we did to plan this visit to was contact the host and hostess directly by phone.
They gave us the feeling that we would be welcome.
What is seen on their web site worked well. We had to find it in the dark ,and we knew we were home because we recognized it from the photos. It is all there as they describe, nothing is needed for the visit .
We would go to this place again ,if the opportunity ever presents it self.
A quaint place ,only 20 minutes from down town St.Johns NFLD
Guests: Kerry & Larry
Dates of stay: August 17-23, 2016
The rumours are true! Newfoundland is absolutely beautiful and the people are warm and friendly. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the Nest. We enjoyed starting each day with a bowl of blueberries and yogourt, listening to the gulls and surf and watching the fishing boats return to the harbour. We could easily have spent our entire vacation here in Petty Harbour. Thank you Karen and David for providing such wonderful accommodations and welcoming us to your little piece of heaven.
We had such a wonderful time in the Upper Nest! Very well appointed and extremely comfortable! Beautiful views! A great starting point for many local destinations! Thanks so much!
Anne & Tom
Had a great stay at Shorelark, the owners were very friendly and accommodating and the unit had everything we needed and more. Great for a perfect short drive into St John's; or the village itself had things to do for entertainment. There are a couple of nice spots to eat and Jigging for cod is a must! We also enjoyed the hands-on aquarium.
We recently stayed in the Upper Nest for a week and we loved it! Karen and David (thanks for the various recommendations!) have created a truly amazing home away from home that is spacious, clean, well appointed, and beautifully designed. The view from the deck is incredible, and we spent countless hours out there watching all of the activity in the harbor and soaking in the sights. Petty Harbour itself is small and quiet, but has a very good restaurant (Chafe’s Landing), a great coffee shop (watershed Coffee Shop), and easy access to two trailheads on the East Coast Trail (one of which is just a quick walk up the street from the Upper and Lower Nests). It is also close to St. John’s and offers easy access to points farther south. This was our first trip to Newfoundland and we loved it so much. What made the trip really special, though, was our stay in the Upper Nest. We highly recommend this! Jon and Erika
Aside from sitting on your private deck and watching the whales play in the ocean (10,000 Humpbacks migrate through the area each year!) and the icebergs idle by (in season of course)... there is plenty to do in Petty Harbour itself!
Petty Harbour has been an active fishing village since the 1500s. Feel the quaintness of the village for yourself... just take the short stroll down to the harbour and be gob-smacked by the stunning vista.
For non-licensed fishers, the Newfoundland and Labrador Recreational Food Fishery happens twice a year during summer and fall. The recreational fishery is open to both residents and non-residents and there is no license requirement. If not partaking yourself, you can still watch as folks take to the waters in small boats and then come back to the wharf to clean their catch in the same way it's been done for hundred of years. Either way, it's sure to whet your appetite!
Speaking of which - Chafe's Landing, the local seafood restaurant, is waiting to serve you the same fresh-caught fish at lunch - and again at supper, if you wish - it's that good! They have just completed a lovely reno and now have a small "pub"and deck! There is something for everyone on Chafe's menu!
We also have a new coffee shop called The Watershed - located right on the wharf. Enjoy artisan coffee, sandwiches and pastries in this quaint waterside cafe!
Learn the local history at the Petty Harbour Heritage Museum, learn about Newfoundland aquatic life at the Petty Harbour Mini Aquarium, stop into the Information Centre, get a bit of exercise while enjoying the quiet splendor of the East Coast Trail or for the more adventurous...try Zip Lining (North Atlantic Zip Lining) through the hills and get a bird's eye view of the Atlantic Ocean.
Canoers, kayakers and jet ski enthusiasts bring their crafts to the launches at the wharf and enjoy the Petty Harbour area also!
We are located on the East Coast Trail where there is plenty of hiking for all levels.
Or maybe you just want to while away the hours poking through craft shops, artist studios or picking wild blueberries in the hills outside your suite.
Petty Harbour also has its popular Arts & Heritage Festival in August.
We also have a brand new convenience store which will open at the beginning of the season. If you need a little more in the way of groceries, take the 5 minute drive to Bidgoods where you can pick up everything you need including a fabulous selection of Newfoundland specialty food items, Newfoundland crafts and more of the freshest of fish and seafood - including lobster!
For those needing a Pharmacy there is also a Shoppers Drug Mart in the Bidgoods Plaza.
Guests of ShoreLark by the Sea are able to experience an idyllic lifestyle in Petty Harbour yet can switch gears very quickly with a 15 minute drive into St. John's, one of the oldest most vibrant cities in North America, where they can hit the pubs, theatres, art galleries, museums, shopping, sports events and fine dining restaurants.
Petty Harbour is also located minutes from one of the biggest attractions to the province, Cape Spear, the most easterly point in North America, and is a launching point for many day trips including the Irish Loop, whale and bird watching boat tours, sea kayaking and much more.
If you head down to Ferryland you can check out the Colony of Avalon Archaeological Dig and have a lovely catered picnic lunch right on the cliffs at the Ferryland Lighthouse.
Bird lovers must take the trip to Cape St. Mary's Ecological Reserve! Witness one of the most accessible places in the world to see nesting seabirds including kittiwakes, cormorants, puffins and more than 24,000 gannets.
The Avalon Wilderness Area is home to the most southerly herd of Woodland caribou.
There are several golf courses nearby, including a championship public course with panoramic views of St. John's and the surrounding coastline.
Brook trout and Atlantic salmon are also abundant in the ponds and rivers of the region.
Other outdoor activities: Sea kayaking, boating, mountain biking, horseback riding, swimming and more are all available.
Newfoundland has so many incredible things to do and see...and we could go on forever... so instead we'll just give you a link to one of the best sites to get all the information you need!
