Overview

About the property

Enjoy a getaway on the peaceful, quiet River House on the Mississippi River. In the mornings the only sounds you might hear are the sounds of the birds. In the summer you will watch barges and riverboats go by, or watch the flock of white pelicans on the River. In the wintertime eagles are on the ice in front of the house. On this part of the river, Pool 13, there are many inlets for boating and kayaking. The area is known for its fishing tournaments. There is a public boat launch 1 mile up the road, and there is a local place to rent boats. The River House has a dock for boating or fishing. The wildlife and spectacular sunsets offer many outstanding photographic opportunities. The Thomson area is on the Northern Illinois Wine Trail, and it features many wineries with tasting rooms. There are many antique shops and quilting shops nearby. You can also enjoy the local orchards and live summer theater. Nearby are the Palisades State Park, the Ingersol Nature Center, the Thomson Causeway, and Eagle Point Park. Thomson is on the Illinois Bike Trail, and bikes can be rented in town.

The River House is a one story ranch house, and it sleeps 6 with 4 beds. The house has 2 bedrooms, plus an entryway room with a queen size hide-a-bed. The master bedroom has a queen bed, and the second bedroom has two twin beds. An inflatable twin bed is also available. There are 2 full bathrooms. The house has a complete kitchen, central air, and a washer and dryer. In the winter a wood fireplace is available. Outside there is an eating area on the wrap-around deck. A gas barbecue grill is available and a fire pit for campfires.

The River House is 2 1/2 hours from Chicago and Madison, Wisconsin, and 1 hour from Dubuque, IA and the wonderful National Mississippi River Museum. It is a 45 minute drive to Galena for sightseeing, shopping, and good restaurants. In Galena, Cascade Mountain offers downhill skiing and snowboarding. It is also a 45 minute drive to the Quad Cities, a large metropolitan area that features wonderful museums, including the Putnam, the Figge Art Museum, and John Deere.

Whether you want to relax watching the sunset with friends, or whether you want to go sightseeing in Galena, our house will meet your needs. We live next door and will be available to answer any questions and make sure your visit is a very pleasant one.

About Nana Campana

My husband and I used the River House as our weekend getaway, before we moved here from the Chicago suburbs. We are both from the Midwest (Wisconsin and Illinois). I am a retired teacher, and my husband is a retired sheet metal worker. We lived in the River House full time while we were building our house next door. This area is really beautiful, and we enjoy boating, the sunsets, and the quiet, although we do head into Chicago frequently to enjoy theater and other city things. My favorite time here is in the fall and winter, when it is extra beautiful on the River. People are friendly here, and the neighbors will welcome you.

Why Nana Campana chose Illinois

The River House is a great getaway. It is only 2 1/2 hours from Chicago, which is very convenient. It is a quiet, relaxing place in the woods on the Mississippi River with a spectacular view. Since the house has a wrap-around deck overlooking the river, you can eat outside and enjoy the fresh air and the view. The house is on one floor, and there are few steps to worry about.

What makes this house unique

Since the house is on a wooded cul-de-sac, the area is very peaceful and quiet. Yet nearby there are many wineries, quilting shops, and antique shops to enjoy. Boating on the river is wonderful.

Very nice place

  • 5 of 5

The house was clean, cozy and spacious. It had everything you would need for barbecue or bonfire. There was no wifi but everything else was perfect.

Owner's Response: The River House is a place to gather, connect, refresh, and relax. One of our guiding principles is: "Never go too long without watching a sunset." Atticus

Just what the doctor ordered!

  • 5 of 5

We were needing and looking for a quiet, comfortable place close enough to home due to driving restrictions. We decided that the Mississippi River was an "easy" drive and started looking at the Savanna area. We decided that the River House on the Mississippi River was a natural fit - one story, easy to get in to and quiet. After talking to Nana on the phone and then meeting Ron and Nana, we knew we had made the right choice. They were available if we had questions and did not intrude upon us. We spent many hours sitting on the deck, listening the the birds, watching the barges and the sunset. Perfection!

VERY Quiet Get-Away- Wonderful!

  • 5 of 5

We are a family of six. Two parents, two teenagers and two 20-somethings. We thoroughly enjoyed our time at The River House. Ron and Nana were excellent hosts. The house was clean and well-stocked with everything we could need. Our favorite part was mornings on the deck drinking our coffee and catching up with each other. We enjoyed the birds and the squirrels as they danced through the trees. It was surprisingly not buggy. We were able to see two of the sunsets, but this time of the year there were more bugs at the river at sunset and we couldn't stay down there long. Nana left a lot of information about things to do. They even had a closet of board games which our family enjoyed. There was one thing I wish I knew before we came: there is no wifi and we only got 1x signal (at best) on our iPhones. This was actually very much a blessing as it forced us to disconnect from our normal lives! What a gift! However, had I known, I would've done much more internet research on activities and places to go before we left. This became a planning challenge for us, but we managed. We also enjoyed the late day shade that the mature trees provided, but they did block much of the view of the river. If you are looking for a quiet, peaceful getaway with your family, this is a great place to go! Ron and Nana will take good care of you. Next time we are looking for a place to go as a family, we will certainly consider The River House!

Owner's Response: As stated in our listing, we do not have wi-fi, but it is available nearby. Most guests just use their phones. A detailed list of local places to visit is always mailed to each guest before arrival. The River House is a place to gather, connect, refresh, and relax.

Everything we needed and wanted!

  • 5 of 5

The house had everything we could have wanted, nicely stocked. We fished from the shore and had bonfires and cooked on the grill and enjoyed lots of cooking in the nice kitchen. The photos of the home showed the master bedroom from several different angles, and I mistakenly thought they were separate rooms... this is a two bedroom home. Which was fine for our purposes, I was just surprised. It was nice having a washer and dryer, and we enjoyed the large tub in the master bathroom. It was a beautiful area, and we will probably stay here again someday.

Owner's Response: The River House is a 2 bedroom house. However, the entryway room has a queen-size hide-a-bed in it, and there is a door separating it from the rest of the house. We always contact guests right after booking to make sure the sleeping arrangements will work for them. We are glad that guests enjoy the kitchen and large dining room table. A lot of good cooking and visiting has gone on there!

Great Getaway on the River

  • 5 of 5

Me and my friends truly enjoyed staying at this home...such a serene, private location, with an awesome deck overlooking the Mississippi River.

On a very quiet dead-end street, the only sounds we heard were from wildlife!

We chose to cook all our meals during our stay and found the kitchen very well-stocked with all the cookware we needed.

The home was scrupulously clean and well-maintained, and the owners next door gave us our space, but let us know they were there for anything we may need.

The area around Thomson was quite enjoyable; laid-back river towns with friendly citizens, fun things to do and places to explore, and we even went to the local dragstrip! (This is a lot more fun than you may envision).

We can't wait to return with more family and friends in the near future.
