About Nile Southern

I've lived in this house during summers since my mother bought it over 20 years ago. This house has brought much joy to my family--and will to yours, too!

Nile Southern purchased this house in 1989

Why Nile Southern chose Hamptons

Coming out to the Hamptons during the summer is a treat--and we've found, in all our stays out here, that the Sag Harbor area is the most rewarding--you have a wonderfully picturesque old town, non-stop cultural events, excellent cuisine, and the house itself is a calming place to return to and settle in for any activity, be it reading, a game of croquette, or lighting up the fireplace on a cold night. Minimally and tastefully appointed, the original owner (my mother) was a renown publisher at Random House and developed the 'Style' and 'Living' line of books... elegant yet casual!

What makes this house unique

The whaler's tower, screened-in porch provide classic Victorian touches to this proud house and the large grounds with mature trees makes the house seem grand and opulent. My mother, who worked in publishing, was also an artist and designer--she had tremendous sense of style and flair--clean lines and rich decor, tasteful yet not ostentatious. It's a great house to relax and entertain in.

A Taste of the Old Hamptons

  • 5 of 5

This home is the way the Hamptons were 40 years ago, when Truman Capote got smashed at the Driver's Seat in Southampton and wrapped his car around a tree in Sagaponack, when James Joyce and Wilfred Sheed and Willie Morris got hammered at Bobby Van's in winter, when Sag Harbor was still a rough town. Wood floors, wicker furniture, antiques, some beautiful watercolors, a huge yard with a picnic table and crickets and blue jays and chickadees and peace (and an outdoor shower). There's no "media room" - talk, cook, read, play cards and backgammon, listen to WLNG. There's no swimming pool - you're on Long Island - GO TO THE BLOODY BEACH - THAT'S WHY YOU'RE HERE. This is the kind of cool that's rapidly disappearing from the East End - savor it while you still can. Nile is a fantastic host; you'll want for nothing you really need, and if you don't really need it, it's not here in the first place. A great evening ritual here is to pop over to Long Beach (30 seconds by car), have a drink, and watch the sun set over Peconic Bay, then come home to boil your lobster and potatoes.

Perfect?

  • 5 of 5

I've been taught that nothing's perfect. But Nile's wonderful old house comes as close as I can imagine.

Beautifully renovated without sacrificing its 19th-century charm, superbly located between the town and Long Beach, surrounded by large greensward and woods -- this place was heaven for me, loved ones, and friends. The photos only begin to convey its loveliness. I hope to return as often as I can.

A wonderful stay

  • 5 of 5

Sadly, we only spent 2 nights in this wonderful old home! It is definitely a place on our list of return visits.

Nile was extremely helpful and accommodating....making our short stay easy and comfortable! The house has all the charm we were hoping for...we felt as if we were stepping back in time. Our first visit to Long Island was made perfect by the Whaler's Dream House!

Charming house right north of Sag Harbor

  • 4 of 5

Rented the house to stay with my parents from out of town in October

Charming house right north of Sag Harbor, great location and access to sit by the Bay

Old home that has a ton of character, super super quiet so bring a book and wine

3 bedrooms upstairs and small daybed downstairs, 1 full bathroom upstairs and 1 full downstairs

Great screened-in porch with rockers as well as chairs/picnic table in backyard

Didn't walk into town bc Ferry Rd gets so dark

Great local farmers markets so fun to cook at home

Perfect House Near Ocean, Bay & Village~ Romantic & Kid-Friendly

  • 5 of 5

This historic home is part Italian farmhouse and part Greek island beach house. It has beautiful morning light, original wooden plank floors, an enchanting screened in porch, a well-equipped country kitchen, and stunning old trees that soar above the house's 3rd story tower. There is a perfectly placed outdoor picnic table under a tree on a small brick patio and a heavenly outdoor shower. The 3 upstairs bedrooms have comfortable beds and are simply furnished. The house is romantic, rustic, and kid-friendly with lots of wicker furniture, and large, safe outdoor spaces for kids and a dog.

My granddaughter loves walking from the house to Main Street in the village of Sag Harbor (10 minutes) to visit the shops, check out the boats in the marina, and visit the 100-year old "Variety Store" that sells absolutely everything. It's a 5-minute drive or 15- minute walk to Long Beach, the bay beach that's perfect for swimming and for kids, and another 5 minutes beyond is the Morton Sanctuary with a lovely beach and lots of amazing birds. The surrounding area is mostly flat and great for biking.

The nearest ocean beach at Sagaponeck is the most spectacular of the Hampton beaches-- a 10 minute drive from the house--- the dunes are marvelous.

There are farms around for buying local produce, homemade pies and cookies, as well as local wineries and horse farms. The historic village of Sag Harbor has some charming restaurants, cafes and shops, along with a few glitzy ones, a cinema, a gym, and live theater on the wharf. The 2-minute ferry ride to Shelter Island is 5 minutes away and there is a seasonal ferry to the North Fork villages.

This is my idea of the perfect country house, where we walked to the beach at 2 am to view the shooting stars.

Sag Harbor is the most picturesque of all the villages in the Hamptons. Bike into town from the house, walk around the village visit the bookstore, movie theatre (foreign and art-house fare) and Bay Street theatre (excellent performances). Sag Harbor is a cultural destination and great to yacht-watching, too. House is also within walking/biking distance of Long Beach--a pleasant and relaxing beach where you can have a swim and see the sunset.
