About Nile Southern
I've lived in this house during summers since my mother bought it over 20 years ago. This house has brought much joy to my family--and will to yours, too!
Nile Southern purchased this House in 1989
Why Nile Southern chose Sag Harbor
Coming out to the Hamptons during the summer is a treat--and we've found, in all our stays out here, that the Sag Harbor area is the most rewarding--you have a wonderfully picturesque old town, non-stop cultural events, excellent cuisine, and the house itself is a calming place to return to and settle in for any activity, be it reading, a game of croquette, or lighting up the fireplace on a cold night. Minimally and tastefully appointed, the original owner (my mother) was a renown publisher at Random House and developed the 'Style' and 'Living' line of books... elegant yet casual!
What makes this House unique
The whaler's tower, screened-in porch provide classic Victorian touches to this proud house and the large grounds with mature trees makes the house seem grand and opulent. My mother, who worked in publishing, was also an artist and designer--she had tremendous sense of style and flair--clean lines and rich decor, tasteful yet not ostentatious. It's a great house to relax and entertain in.

A truly relaxing and entertaining retreat
From the first step involved with the booking we are very pleased. Nile couldn't of been more helpful and warming. My wife and I were looking for somewhere to spend the Thanksgiving Holiday away from all the busy life back in PA. It was a great choice. Only 1 thing, the pictures do not do this perfect, beautiful, home the right justice. You have to experience it live. We light a fire every night, perfect start to every evening. Cooked in twice, and visited two of the local restaurants that were both amazing, over our four night stay. Home is literally a walk to town and all the shopping you could want. 4 miles to the ferry to Shelter Island, and approximately 4-5 miles from East Hampton, and also Bridge Hampton. The home is very charming and very clean and neat. I will be back shortly for sure. Hats off to Nile!!
Lovely simple old house near town -- just as described.
Nile's house was charming and had a vintage feel to it - claw foot bath tubs and original wood floors. It was clean and in good order with fresh toiletries waiting in the bathrooms and a bottle of wine in the fridge for us. Although we never met Nile, he was accessible by email and responded to my questions quite promptly. He also was aware that gardener would be there the day we arrived and seemed on top of the house maintenance although he was not present. Nile thoroughly addressed my questions about ticks via email and was really helpful in delineating where I should let my kids roam and where they should not go. House is at end of a long shared driveway, however we did not see any other cars on driveway for the duration of our stay. Ferry Road is quite busy with cars and trucks yet you could not hear the cars from the house which is set way back. Although one reviewer said she let her grandchild walk to town from house, I felt the road was too busy and there was no sidewalk for safety. It is a very quick/easy car ride to the restaurants and shops, however, and driving was not a problem. House has lots of beautiful lawns and a hammock and screened in porch to lounge on. It was a really nice stay.
great overall experience. Nile, though absent, was very present for anything we might need. Thanks!
Nice, responsive host, beautiful old house, real country feel. A long weekend felt like a month worth of resting. Great find! will be back...
A Taste of the Old Hamptons
This home is the way the Hamptons were 40 years ago, when Truman Capote got smashed at the Driver's Seat in Southampton and wrapped his car around a tree in Sagaponack, when James Joyce and Wilfred Sheed and Willie Morris got hammered at Bobby Van's in winter, when Sag Harbor was still a rough town. Wood floors, wicker furniture, antiques, some beautiful watercolors, a huge yard with a picnic table and crickets and blue jays and chickadees and peace (and an outdoor shower). There's no "media room" - talk, cook, read, play cards and backgammon, listen to WLNG. There's no swimming pool - you're on Long Island - GO TO THE BLOODY BEACH - THAT'S WHY YOU'RE HERE. This is the kind of cool that's rapidly disappearing from the East End - savor it while you still can. Nile is a fantastic host; you'll want for nothing you really need, and if you don't really need it, it's not here in the first place. A great evening ritual here is to pop over to Long Beach (30 seconds by car), have a drink, and watch the sun set over Peconic Bay, then come home to boil your lobster and potatoes.
I've been taught that nothing's perfect. But Nile's wonderful old house comes as close as I can imagine.
Beautifully renovated without sacrificing its 19th-century charm, superbly located between the town and Long Beach, surrounded by large greensward and woods -- this place was heaven for me, loved ones, and friends. The photos only begin to convey its loveliness. I hope to return as often as I can.
A wonderful stay
Sadly, we only spent 2 nights in this wonderful old home! It is definitely a place on our list of return visits.
Nile was extremely helpful and accommodating....making our short stay easy and comfortable! The house has all the charm we were hoping for...we felt as if we were stepping back in time. Our first visit to Long Island was made perfect by the Whaler's Dream House!
Sag Harbor is the most picturesque of all the villages in the Hamptons. Bike into town from the house, walk around the village visit the bookstore, movie theatre (foreign and art-house fare) and Bay Street theatre (excellent performances). Sag Harbor is a cultural destination and great to yacht-watching, too. House is also within walking/biking distance of Long Beach--a pleasant and relaxing beach where you can have a swim and see the sunset.
