3 Bedroom, 2 Bath, sparsely populated area, walk into park from property's edge
The Knotty Pony is located directly on the Joshua Tree National Park border. She's an easy 4 miles from the downtown eateries. Hiking explorations of the park start at the end of the driveway, with trails into spectacular, secluded ravines. Other nearby attractions include the 49 Palms Oasis and Indian Cove (a favorite spot for rock climbers).
Built in the seventies and nestled in a grove of mature trees, the Knotty Pony is a big friendly chalet of a house with an open floor plan, original 18' beamed ceilings and tons of warm wood. Our suspicion is that she started life as a back-in-the-day kit house that one might have found plans for in Sunset Magazine. We selected restored vintage modern furniture pieces, craft items, and art to express our appreciation for handmade objects, and left as many of the original rustic features in place as comfort and taste would allow. Three bedrooms and two bathrooms accommodate up to six peeps. The master bedroom/bath suite has a king bed and tons of closet space, plus tub and shower in the bathroom. One of the two upstairs bedrooms has a queen bed, and the other has a daybed (the daybed can also be configured into two twins or one queen). The upstairs bedrooms share a bathroom which also has a tub and shower. There's also a large sofa/daybed in the TV lounge. There's plenty of seating under the porch overhang for gazing down at the long views to the north, or for looking up at the dark night skies, and coal barbecues and a fire barrel for roasting some eats.
Experience pristine hikes and park scenery without ever getting in the car...simply step outside the door and walk the 50 or so paces that will take you onto the critter trails that crisscross the nearby parkland. Inside Knotty Pony, Fujitsu mini-splits quietly and cleanly heat and cool each zone of the house for comfort regardless of season. Basic cable TV and Netflix are provided in the mezzanine hang-out lounge, and the acoustics in this wood house are so perfect that we just had to install a turntable backed up with an eclectic sampling of vinyl. The six person jacuzzi is in the sheltered side yard and is professionally maintained between guests. Books, board games, cookbooks, an assortment of basic spices, and good cookware and appliances (Jen Air oven, a dishwasher, electric 5 burner stove) speak to a range of interests. The 9' dining table is a great place to spread out and work on a project or to enjoy a communal meal.
Because it's such a roomy property, it might be tempting to invite the gang out for a bash. Though we love attending a lively party, please refrain from having one here as we need to keep the property in A+ condition for guests seeking quality space and quiet enjoyment. Likewise, special arrangements are required for filming and photo shoots. So sorry, but we no longer allow pets.
Knotty Pony makes a great weekend retreat, but please inquire about longer stays as we happily slide the scale as the number of nights, weeks, or months increase! Over half of Knotty Pony visitors are return guests, with multiple return stays of up to four months. We encourage long stays, with weekly rates at 1,600. and the monthly rate at 3,250. (or about 108. dollars per night) for one month and 2,950. per month for multiple months. Nightly stays are 325. per night. Please click on the "rates" tab below the photos for accurate pricing, as the VRBO "average pricing" feature in the headline can be misleading! They combine all of the rates from nightly to monthly, and deduce an average. This is not an optional feature, so I apologize for any misdirects that this formatting may have caused.

As a set designer, I'm in love with the visual drama of the California high desert. I was so excited when I found my little spot in the Mojave....I couldn't wait to start working with the palette of homestead architecture, native plants, seasons, and vistas that Joshua Tree offers. My hope is that the resulting home reflects the unassuming laid-back lifestyle that I value but sometimes find difficult to enjoy in LA, while also reflecting a respect for nature, warmth, a bit of humor, and relaxation with the necessary flourishes (good art, good books, wi-fi and music!).
Miriam purchased this House in 2010
Why Miriam chose Panorama Heights
When I stumbled on The Knotty Pony as a rambling diamond in the rough with her 2000 sq. ft of untouched original woodwork, FABULOUS park-adjacent location with big views and mature trees, there were only two things that I could do…take down the realtor sign and pick up my hammer!
What makes this House unique
Being in a house on the border of a wilderness area is a powerful reminder of many things. I love this house for helping me to remember how many stars there are in a night dark sky, what the sound of quiet feels like, and how to gauge the passing of hours by the movement of light and color across a rock mountain outside the window.

Your Own Private Entrance to Joshua Tree National Park
If you like dark night skies, the sound of breezes in the trees, dramatic desert vistas, and little critters greeting you each morning, then this is the place for you. The name "Knotty Pony" didn't really resonate until we arrived to find that the entire place - walls, ceilings, cabinetry - is finished in warm knotty pine.
It's a very welcoming place. The grounds are immaculate - likely the one place in the desert you could even pad around barefooted. The trees and cacti were in bloom, so there were splashes of bright color and fragrance around each corner. Each morning, a covey of California quail occupied the trees outside the bedroom windows, nibbling at blossoms and chattering away. Rabbits, chipmunks, and ground squirrels scurried around the fence line and underneath the outdoor furniture. A mourning dove couple nesting near the front door kept a wary eye on us.
The kitchen is well-stocked, but we grilled outside each night (except for the obligatory evening at Pappy and Harriet's). The modern laundry was a big plus. For vinyl lovers, this may be the only property listed with VRBO that provides a large (and alphabetized!) collection of classic and eclectic rock, jazz and classical music albums and a good system on which to play them.
Then there is the hot tub. My wife and I have for years discounted the idea that a hot tub is something we need. But after our stay at the Knotty Pony, we are rethinking that notion. It's a large, spotlessly clean tub that looks directly at the park's nearby mountain of boulders.
This property borders Joshua Tree National Park. We hiked nearly every day, but only once used a formal trail accessed through the Park's official entrance. Instead, we simply crossed the dirt road in front of the house, and walked into the wilderness - never saw anyone else out there.
The Knotty Pony is great place that we highly recommend. There were only three of us, so we had room to spare, but it sleeps six very comfortably.
Perfect Base Camp for exploring Joshua tree national Park
We loved it. Great views, charmingly appointed, convenient location, and a wonderful family size hot tub!
Beautiful property with unbelievable views
It's hard to imagine a better place to stay if forced inside by the rare wet weather. Light a fire in the fireplace, put on a record from the eclectic collection, sit back and enjoy a magnificent view of Joshua Tree. Sleeps six comfortably, full kitchen with Joshua Tree Coffee Roaster beans at the ready.
A wonderful, fascinating, inspired home. Our extended family of six (mixed ages) greatly enjoyed the interior decorations and its location adjacent to the Joshua Tree National Park. It was a perfect location for our combined reunion and holiday.
It is as quiet as the dark night that allowed us to view the Milky Way. Comfortable beds assisted in a good night’s sleep. Outdoor appointments also designed for relaxation.
The owner was most helpful with how-to information for the home.

Thank YOU Miraim for creating this heaven for ALL to enjoy!!!
The house was perfect for two families of four with school aged kids. Two kids were able to sleep in the loft with air mattresses. The house and grounds were extremely well maintained. A special treat was the massive collection of old albums from the 60s-80s and a working turnstile to play them on! Each night was a treasure hunt to find our evening's soundtrack! Highly recommend this home.
Knotty Pony Chalet abuts the northern boundary of Joshua Tree National Park. A secluded, marked trailhead just across the dirt road access takes hikers into spectacular ravines, with easy, scenic hiking options along the way for those inclined toward leisure. Boulder scramble a stone's throw from the front door. Some years we have seen bighorn sheep on the mountain just to the south. The covered porch looks out to long valley views. Downtown Joshua Tree is about 4 miles away.
