Celebrating our 55th anniversary by renting a home that would accommodate 14 people. When I found this on VRBO, we were very excited. Both my wife and I were born and raised on ranches in Wyoming. We wanted our kids and grandchildren to experience the animals.
The description of the property, led us to believe that there was guest cottage, a caretaker and owner on the property but there was no shared living area (correct) What was omitted was that the guest cottage was a converted two car garage that was attached to the house we were renting, and there was an RV rental about 10’ outside of our master bedroom, several RV rentals on the other side of the pond, owner’s house also had a shared rental, and a house boat on the pond was also used as a rental.
The main house has a back porch and has a large, enclosed area that other guest would walk though to look at the animals - adjacent to the back patio deck was the animal corral. When and where I grew up, livestock pens and facilities were never close (adjacent to) the home for obvious reasons.
Our grandkids love the connection with the pigs, goats, chickens, horses and alpacas along with fishing from the dock.
Things can go wrong, and I understand that. After arrival, Corey told us that the dryer had quit working before we got there, and he had ordered repair parts from Amazon. Fortunately, some of our kids had not left home yet, so we had them bring as many wash rags and towels as they could grab. When we left six days later, still no dryer and no apology for not having a washer and dryer as advertised.
During our stay, the septic system backed up – I’m sure that it was designed and approved for a three-bath home and now there are two more bathrooms and 17-18 people using it and maxed its limit.
An 8-hour power outage, Walter (caretaker) brought a flashlight and Corey (owner) brought two more by. We used the firepit for fun and outside games.
We feel that we were misled by the description of the property. If you are renting this unit, just know you have limited privacy and can expect people to walk past you on the back porch while enjoying a drink so that they can pet/feed the animals – nice people but strange circumstances.
