About Jill Baxter

My husband is college football coach at USC and founder and creator of Academic Gameplan. I am Sports Law attorney/and CEO of our company Academic Gameplan, which teaches students how to learn. We have two daughters in college. The cabin is our place to relax. We bring our horses in the summer, hike, boat, and spend time with all the cabin owners we know in Shaver. In the winter we ski, snowboard, sled, and snow shoe. We currently iive in Redondo Beach, CA.

Jill Baxter purchased this cabin in 2003

Why Jill Baxter chose Gold Country & High Sierra

We looked for two years to find a cabin in Shaver. We wanted to buy a cabin not a house built in the mountains. This cabin has 4 bedrooms but was only 1,500 square feet. However, it felt much bigger, why?

This cabin was owned by the McQuaids for thirty years, a ship builder. Mr. McQuaid knew how to use space efficiently and used high quality building materials. It has great pine walls, well built, lots of big windows, 3/4 acre lot , but just needed some clean up. We spent two weeks putting in new flooring, decorating, and clean up. We found great antiques in the garage that now hang on the wall in the reading room. The table in the family room is the original door of the cabin. The stone fireplace is made of quartz. The deck is huge and faces the beautiful trees. We can walk to town, the library, and to restaurants. This cabin is one of kind! We have been renting this cabin for ten years and everyone loves this cabin including us!! So if you rented this cabin from Bill, he retired. The second property management company isn't renting cabins anymore. So we are now renting this by owner. We love that other families enjoy our cabin, too!

What makes this cabin unique

This year we remodeled the kitchen and bathroom. The kitchen and bathroom customer cabinets were made out of a shaver tree my husband assisted well known logger Jeff Young hoist out of the bottom of Shaver Lake. The beautiful stone floors were installed by well known mason Dan Young. A beautiful stone shower in the bathroom makes you feel like you are outside. It is the only cabin in shaver with sinker wood custom cabinets. The Deck is the same size as main level of the cabin. Beautiful View of Trees from every window in the cabin, Close to town, Not close to other cabins, lots of parking, Pine walls, well built, a cabin not a house built in the mountains, Four bedrooms, reading room, living room, large kitchen, separate mud room.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had an awesome time at shaver. You cabin is fantastic. Very homey and comfortable. It snowed Saturday night so kids woke up to frosted trees. They had a blast sledding down the hills behind the cabin. Again thank you for working with our schedule. We want to come back again next year!

Very quaint cottage, we really enjoyed our stay. Kitchen is great to cook in.

We had a great time, very comfortable family room and great kitchen. Only challenge was height in shower and upstairs bathroom for those over six feet, but adequate. Had a great time, loved the deck and bbq provided. Made wonderful memories with my family. Thank you for your hospitality.

Great Cabin in Shaver!

  • 5 of 5

Baxter's cabin was very nice! Just south of the west village - it was convenient to drive into town. The kitchen is new and modern with nice appliances and well stocked. The kids enjoyed their rooms and selection of DVDs to choose from. The TV is large and clear and the living room furniture is comfortable. The large deck would be great for an outdoor BBQ! The communication before we arrived was good by Jill Baxter. We parked our boat trailer on the property. I would recommend this cabin if you want to be close to town or the lake.

Quintessential Mountain Cottage!

  • 5 of 5

This Cabin is the quintessential cabin for which we were searching! The setting feels very private, and has a lovely deck to enjoy. All though the rooms and set up is cozy, warm, and charming, the kitchen is beautiful with all the modern conveniences. We had a great time, and the owner was very accommodating!

somewhere in the hotter part of California...

The cabin is in a good location, VERY close to town. If you are going during the winter and they are expecting a snowstorm make sure that you have chains as the driveway is a bit tricky when covered in snow. However, it was absolutely beautiful when it did snow and there is a great little area for "snow play" as well! An added plus is the tankless water heater, there is only one shower but plenty of hot water! Kitchen is very well stocked and there was indeed a home office with a printer, a reliable internet connection and best of all a lovely view...

Cute cabin in the woods

We had a great time. The sledding right next to the cabin provided countless hours of fun for our young children. Thanks again.

The property was ok, if it was clean we would definitely go back. The location was great, the kitchen was set up very nice. A little more seating would be nice in living area. But really it just needed a good clean and an extra trash can.

Owner's Response: I appreciate Mindy honesty. During holidays we had back to back renters and my cleaner admitted she wasn't able to get all the sheets washed so there was some laundry in the laundry room and previous guest didn't empty the coffee maker. This was an opportunity to have a discussion with my cleaner about how the place should look before each renter. I sent Mindy note to my cleaner and she has done a great job since that day. This particular renter ended up have an entire pick up truck of trash because of Christmas which my cleaner loaded up and took to the dumpster!
