Cozy Sausalito Home, Overlooking the Bay

Bedrooms 3
Space 2,000 sq. ft.
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

Totally remodeled Classic Sausalito Bungalow with 3 bedroom, 3 baths

Accommodations: Sleeping arrangements for 4-5 people. Not a hotel , not an apartment, not a condo – a real home away from home with three bedrooms and three baths. Master bedroom has large California King size bed and full bath, with spa-type tub and stall shower. Second bedroom has two twin beds and a full bath as well. Third bedroom has a single twin-size bed and is adjacent to the upstairs bath.

Description: Sausalito is a small town located just below the famous Golden Gate Bridge north of San Francisco. Originally a fishing community, it is now the home of dozens of yachts, houseboats and weekend homes. An easy 10-15 minutes drive south back across the bridge brings you right into the heart of San Francisco....or forget the car and take the ferry across. Protected by the hills of the Marin Headlands, and facing east, Sausalito typically has less fog, more sun and warmer temperatures than San Francisco. Being located on the north side of the Bay provides easy access to all of Marin County and the wine country of Napa Valley as well.

From the home, it’s a short walk down the hill to Bridgeway and Calidonia, the two main streets of Sausalito where there are many excellent restaurants and boutique shops. Bicycle and kayak rentals are close by. There is also a movie theater, several parks, and a terminal for the ferry service that takes you directly to Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco.

The home is a charming remodeled and expanded California cottage. Seen from the street, it appears small, but in fact it has over 2000 sq. ft. of interior space. What you can’t see from the street is the large stone terrace in the back that affords a commanding bay view and sweeping vistas from Mt. Tamalpais and Mill Valley to the center of Sausalito itself. You can literally spend hours just watching boating activity on the bay.

The main living area of the house has Brazilian Cherrywood floors while the remainder of the house is fully carpeted. The kitchen has black granite countertops and comes fully equipped for cooking. The house is wired for broadband communications, WIFI and has a 184 channels of cable TV. There are books and travel literature to read and even toys for children.

Welcome home !

About Lee Bookman

We are a family of three, including our teenage son.

Basically, we live and work in Santa Cruz, California, approximately 90 miles south of Sausalito. The house in Sausalito is our home away from home, our weekend getaway. We use the home ourselves almost as much as we offer it to guests, which is why our 'calendar' shows that the house is not booked 100% of the time each month.

Lee Bookman purchased this cottage in 2001

Why Lee Bookman chose San Francisco Bay Area

We were looking for a getaway location somewhere around San Francisco. We looked at condos and apartments in the City itself, but decided that Marin County, across the Golden Gate Bridge, was close enough, was a lot quieter and had better weather. We chose Sausalito because it is an older, well-established town with true community spirit among the locals, and because it reminds us a lot of Portifino, Italy.

What makes this cottage unique

The weather in Sausalito is just fantastic! It can be cold, gray, wet and foggy in San Francisco, even at the Bridge, but in Sausalito the sun will be shinning, the sky will be blue, and the temperature about 5-10 degrees warmer.

Sausalito is also the gateway to all things North....Napa Valley, Sonoma Valley, Anderson Valley, Mendocino, Muir Woods Redwoods, The Marin Headlands, Stinson Beach, San Rafael, Santa Rosa and so much more. Just an ideal Northern California location, and yet, only minutes from downtown San Francisco.

A Very Nice Base for a Bay Exploration

  • 5 of 5

The house is very humble from the outside but is very spacious and comfortable on the inside. It was clean and well maintained. The on-street parking was a bit of a problem since a neighbor who owns an electric BMW apparently has appropriated the space in front of the house and we either had to park in from or behind it which was tricky at times. But that is no fault of the owner of the house.

Owner's Response: Thank you, John So glad you and your family enjoyed yourselves at the house. Sorry about the pesky BMW parked in front. Have never seen that car before, nor since. Must have been a temporary visitor to the neighborhood. Cheers Lee

great vacation

  • 5 of 5

Thanks for very quick return of security deposit. Thanks also for renting your wonderful house in Sausalito. We had a great vacation thanks to your wonderful house and view. We have rented a lot of places around the world ( Mainly Europe) and this is one of the finest. The amenities and equipment were superb. It really felt like being around the Mediterranean but with San Francisco within a 20 minute drive. We enjoyed some of your restaurant recommendations in Sausalito and Napa Valley . The one week was not quite enough and so we hope to return some day. Thanks again. David H and family. Raleigh N.C.

A second great stay

  • 5 of 5

We were back at this lovely house for the second successive year and it certainly didn't disappoint. It's a great place to stay when visiting both San Francisco - using the ferry - and the numerous lovely spots in Marin and further north. The deck was certainly a clincher for us and for all-round comfort, quality and value it's hard to believe that there is any other rental property in the area to beat this. Lee is a great and responsive owner and was a joy to deal with. Highly recommended.

Fantastic Place, Fantastic Town!

  • 5 of 5

Sausalito is the place to stay! It is a lovely quaint town and a great place to anchor and explore San Francisco! Lee and Sally's place was outstanding! Lee was very prompt, professional and communication was excellent! They provide a binder(in the home) with all the information regarding the house and your stay. You will honestly say "wow, look at that view" when you walk through the front door! It was a great place to return to after the hustle and bustle of San Fran. We are a family of 5 and had more than enough room! Wish we had more time to explore Sausalito! Some of our favorite food stops in Sausalito were, Fred's coffee shop (the best breakfast I have ever had, can not go wrong with any of the omelettes) and San Drino for amazingly fresh unique pizzas (best tiramisu as well). Our Sausalito stay was Fantastic! Highly recommend this place whether visiting San Francisco or the Napa Region as well! You will not regret it!

Super Sausalito and beautiful home

  • 5 of 5

The house is well laid out and finished to a very high standard. The patio was great, a lovely view of Sausalito harbour, which was always In the sun, which is more than can be said for San Francisco. Good base to explore San Fran, but also good for Muir Woods and obviously lovely Sausalito.

Loved this place!

  • 5 of 5

Prior to our arrival, we stayed several days in Calistoga for a wedding. We wanted to explore the area around San Francisco to complete our trip. We were drawn to this listing because of the photos of the beautiful view. That view is why we stayed in Sausalito.

This home was cozy but also spacious and comfortable. Our group of five adults found it to be prefect for "part two" of our trip. The home is tastefully decorated and updated. The view from the patio is breath taking and ever changing.

The kitchen was fully stocked with anything we'd need to cook in. We felt like we were staying in a friends home as it was stocked with many essentials. We used the laundry which was thoughtfully stocked with detergent. The beds were super comfortable and we would love to stay here again.

Thank you Lee - the owner who was very kind and responsive. I got my security deposit check back within days of leaving.
