About the property

Cottage, Studio, Bath (Sleeps 4)

The foot-wide, hand-sawn boards that make up the ceiling reveal this cottage's original time of construction (1856) and its original purpose (housing for house servants of the Manor). Renovated in 2012, it now boasts a modern full kitchen and bath, split-system heat pump, and charming furnishings selected by our professional interior designer. Best of all, the cottage is on our 600 acre horse and cattle farm, where you have beautiful views in all directions, no sound of traffic, endless woodland trails, and quick and easy access to all the attractions of the Charlottesville area. Plus, it has a huge covered patio on the back side, with ceiling fans, lights, a gas grill, very comfortable furniture and views of several of our horse paddocks.

At Wolf Trap Farm, we have been offering our Manor House and Pond House to travelers since 2004 - to rave reviews. This new offering is ideal for couples or families with a few small children (who can use the queen-sized sofa bed) or even for two couples who do not need privacy (the sofa bed is at the opposite end of the room from the queen-sized bed).

Our guests are always thrilled by the opportunity to enjoy such a large and beautiful pastoral setting. Our entry road is almost a miles long, and you pass ponds, cattle pastures and through cedar-lined sections. At the top of the hill, you find our farm complex, with the Manor House (with this Servants' Cottage snuggled in behind), our bell-roofed barn (former dairy barn), our 1856 bank barn, and other farm buildings. The Pond House and the Dairyman's house are also within view, as is the training ring for our stables. There is a wonderful fishing pond full of bass and bream, and we supply the fishing equipment. And there are miles and miles of woodland trails, two impressive rope swings, horseshoe pits, a hot tub, views of the mountains, ancient boxwoods, and horses and cows to watch. Our wild residents include geese, turkeys, deer, fox, badgers, racoons, coyotes (sadly), thousands of frogs, and the occasional snake, skunk. and field mouse.

So come enjoy the farm, and create a memory that will last forever.

About Keith Cuthrell

I have been a lawyer in Norfolk, VA since 1979. For the past 20-some years, we have also bought and renovated run-down properties. We have three adult children and four grandchildren so far.

Keith Cuthrell purchased this cottage in 2003

Why Keith Cuthrell chose Central Virginia

In 2003, while searching for a little mountain getaway cottage of some sort, I overshot and ended up buying this 600 acre rundown farm. The Charlottesville area has special charm for anyone who knows Virginia, and the village of Gordonsville is just impossible to beat. Also, at the time, I was riding quite a lot, and this area boasts some of the best fox hunts in America.

What makes this cottage unique

This farm has the beautiful rolling landscape that is suitable for picture postcards. It is so secluded, but you are also just a few minutes from civilization of the best type (quaint villages). Everywhere you drive in this area you are passing gorgeous historic estates. Having restored one of those estates and being able to offer it to the public for vacation use is quite a thrill.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a wonderful peaceful visit to the farm with our family. We enjoyed walking/jogging, attempted to catch fish (no nibbles) and enjoyed watering the horses. We never felt the need to leave the farm, and would love to return sometime!

Perfect Getaway

  • 5 of 5

We truly loved the Servants Cottage and it fit our needs exactly! We were able to bring our two dogs, who happily ran and roamed and explored to exhaustion. The tiny cottage is perfect for two people and we spent the majority of our time on the covered patio, where we had a view of the horse fields and horses. The kitchen is fully stocked with updated appliances and everything you need to cook, including a gas grill. We hoped to rent the golf cart to explore the property but unfortunately it was being serviced during our visit. We were pointed to a trail instead and ended up taking a nice walk around the property with the dogs. One thing we appreciate while traveling is that we were totally on our own. Katie, the host, was accessible anytime we needed her via phone, but otherwise we were left to our own, which made it that much more relaxing. This place will definitely be bookmarked should we return to the area!

A couple points worth mentioning:

• Cottage was very clean upon arrival

• Plenty of wood is provided along with a fire pit. We recommend a fire pit under the open sky at dusk until dark to watch all of the stars show up. Beautiful

• Bring your own lighter along with any misc cooking items that can often be forgotten (i.e. oil, butter, foil...)

• TV has just basic channels but there is also a DVD player with a few DVDs. We barely turned it on, so really a non issue

• We weren't able to pick up the Wifi signal. We never called and asked about it though b/c we didn't really need it for the couple days we were there.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your thoughtful review, Kristin. The WiFi is a Mobile Hot Spot. We have several of them and they are shared among the houses at the farm. When you ask for one, we put it in the house you are using, and they work great. Hope you are able to return soon.

We enjoyed three restful and rejuvenating days on the farm. The Servants Cottage was perfect for us. We were fortunate to have met the owners while we were visiting, and they shared historical information about the property and the horses boarding there. One of the horse caretakers was extremely indulgent with our many questions and assisted us with getting the horses to pose for pictures. Kate, the manager, was spot on with suggestions for restaurants in the Gordonsville to Culpepper area. Best of all, the cows were fascinated with our baying hound, Roadie. We look forward to many future escapes to Wolf Trap Farm!

Beautiful getaway

  • 5 of 5

The property is wonderful. We loved visiting the horses throughout the day and our dogs did too (after figuring out what the heck these huge animals were!) It is close to many vineyards and cideries as well as a short drive from Charlottesville.

The servants quarters were quaint and basically exactly what I expected. Definitely a bit rustic, so keep that in mind. Also, a word to the wise, if you hike with dogs on the property, prepare for a major tick removal when you get back. I was not prepared for that and am a bit scarred as a city girl from that experience. :)

The Trap is for you! Day times visits and relaxing stars in the evening

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for a place to get away then look no further Wolf Trap Farm is for you. Have you ever stay at a farm that was owned by James Madison our 4th President one of our Founding Fathers plus 600 acres with mountain views? A short drive to wineries, breweries, history and great food are everywhere around the Charlottesville area. After a day of entertaining then back to the farm to relax and have s’mores by the fire (wood included). They have 3 other houses to choose from... Enjoy

Cozy, comfortable cottage on great property

  • 5 of 5

This is my second year returning to the WolfTrap farm. The entire property is a fantastic place to spend a weekend amongst beautiful scenery and with great access to local attractions. The manor home and cottage are both well equipped and extremely comfortable. Our group of 30somethings really enjoyed the entire visit.

Great Virginia Getaway

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed at the Servant's Cottage for a long weekend "babymoon" trip. Wolftrap Farm was the perfect location since we wanted to have a mix of urban attractions (Charlottesville) and quiet relaxation time in a scenic place. The cottage will well equipped with almost anything you'd need for a getaway. There isn't any cable or wifi, but we didn't really miss either. The grounds of Wolftrap Farm were the best thing about the trip. We loved taking walks around the property and checking in with our temporary neighbors (the horses). The wooded trails on the property were another cool feature. Another plus is that the property is dog friendly. Our vizsla enjoyed roaming the grounds and meeting the animals. The short drive (~35 minutes) to Charlottesville was easy and very scenic. We would absolutely recommend this cottage to anyone traveling to the area.

Owner's Response: We are glad you enjoyed the Servants' Cottage and the farm. Sounds like our other guests were hogging the mobile hotspots. (There is wi-fi - two mobile hotspots - but they are shared around by all the guests.)
