A one bedroom bright and cheery cottage which is one of 3 on this property that was completely renovated in 2012. It is walking distance to town. The focal point is the large screened front porch with a table and chairs for dining, and a wicker loveseat and chair for relaxing. Its the perfect place to unwind after a busy day of sight seeing or to sip a cup of coffee in the morning. The kitchen has everything you need to cook any meal. And the full bathroom has a shower/tub combo. The bedroom has a queen bed while the living area has a full size sofa bed. TV/cable and internet are included, with games and books for your enjoyment also. It is a short walk to town and to the Straights. And a quick drive gets you to the Headlands Dark Sky Park, sandy beaches, and the UP.

About Todd and Jacki VanHuis
We bought this property as a "fixer upper" opportunity. We enjoy renovating projects together and love Mackinaw (vacationed here every summer with our kids) so this was the perfect place for us. The 3 cottages give us a vacation home that will fit all of us as our children get married and have their own families.

Why Todd and Jacki VanHuis chose Mackinaw City
We also love this place for its history as part of the Lazy T resort decades ago. So to restore these cottages and rent them again for families to enjoy is an added benefit. Plus Mack City is a great starting point for other travels to the U.P. and other northern Michigan tourist towns.

Sure beats the Hilton
After years of motorcycle touring and living out of motel rooms, we decided to treat ourselves with a "base of operations" instead of moving motel to motel. From the moment we discovered the Cottage on VRBO we were excited. If you have ever spent a rainy day in a motel room you know what we are talking about.
Every thing was stated in the property description and concluding emails. In fact there was more. There was a list of things to do; churches; grocery stores; everything to make the stay easier.
It was clean. It was supplied. The caretaker was present if needed. The house is on a quiet setting very close to downtown and other activities. The neighborhood is safe and interesting to walk in. The grocery store is in walking distance and although not your Piggly Wiggly, you can get just about everything you are looking for.
The house was a great place to unwind after a day on the road. Eat in or eat out. Everything was there to fix and serve a meal. Only one bed which makes it perfect for a couple. The screened porch is fantastic. We had morning coffee to evening meal on the porch. My wife loved to sit and read in the "outdoors" free from the bugs that annoy her on our deck at home. The house is easy to keep clean. A quick sweep in the morning and it is ready to go.
As a bonus we got to meet Todd and Jacki. Wonderful people who take pride in the properties and sincerely care that your stay meets your needs.
My suggestion - if you are thinking about spending time in the northern Michigan area, this is a perfect place to stay after a day of adventure. We had a fantastic week! Thank you!
Thank you so much for your kind review. Its good to know your stay was such a positive experience. We enjoyed meeting you too and are very thankful for nice guests like you.
A fine pied a terre for the Straights of Mackinac
Clean, quaint and quiet but very small. The screened porch is nice and adds some room to move. The cabin exists in a cluster of three cabins with somewhat of a communal "back yard." The bed is comfortable with about 8 inches of space on either side, so tuck that booty in! My only gripe with the place is the YMCA-like, skin denuding shower head.
The cabin is conveniently close to a couple of restaurants; Darrows and MC Pastie shop. It is an easy walk north to the fort or east to Scheppler's pier. Bottom line, it suited our needs very well at a reasonable price, we would stay here again.
so cute and clean
everything was perfect.....the cottage was just sweet and the weather was great. The only thing that could have been better was if I had know how many towels would be provided I would have brought some of my own other then that it was perfect
Well worth the cost
Quiet location close to downtown. Clean and updated cabin with new furniture.
This was a fantastic cottage with a cabin feel and all the amenities. Perfect location for the ferry’s and downtown. We stayed 3 nights and never drove the car except to go to Tahquamenon Falls. Very clean. Great outdoor breeze way on front entry for evening drinks and morning coffee. Bonfire pit was great for s’mores and offered a camping feel and appeal. The owners happen to be there in another one of their cottages during our stay and were very friendly. Highly recommend this VRBO and will be back the next time I visit upper Michigan.
Very nice place but ...
Our Macatawa cabin was as is pictured. Well taken care of .. mostly. Unfortunately there was a very pervasive odor of mildew and mold. An extra dose of allergy medicine helped. The neighborhood like many parts of Michigan is not in the best shape. Two abandoned or almost abandoned motels about 1.5 blocks away. No driveway to the home so we were instructed to just drive through the grass. It was pretty convenient, about a 15 to 20 minute walk to the restaurant area. One odd part was a request to bring our own toilet paper. We did do so but even while staying abroad or in very inexpensive family resorts we have never been asked to bring our own toilet paper.
We are on the west side of town, on a quiet wooded lot. The Straights are 2 blocks away, and town is 2-3 blocks away with shopping, restaurants, marinas, ferries to Mackinac Island, groceries, coffee shops, fudge and ice cream shops, movie theater, and live music all available.
