About the property

Apartment, 1 Bedroom, Bath (Sleeps 2)

Located in the historic center of Bettona, a small hill town 15k south of both Assisi and Perugia, with easy access to the E45.

Palazzo Fiumi-LaPlaca is run by a Week in Umbria and offers the quintessential Slow Travel vacation — a week (that is not to say you can’t stay for 3 days or a month for that matter) in a small town where you can settle in and relax, enjoy a good meal or stroll to the bar for a cappuccino. AND your stay at the beautifully restored and furnished Palazzo Fiumi-LaPlaca is the perfect base from which to discover Umbria.

The historic palazzo may date from the 16th century and was the home of the Fiumi. (St. Clare's mother was a Fiumi.) The nobile family was one of the largest landowners in the area and one of their principle activities was growing olives. To this day Bettona is surrounded by olive groves that once belonged to the family. In fact, the house contained an olive mill and three presses as well as a stable on its ground floor when I purchased it. Cologero Fiumi, the last count to live in the palazzo, died in 1963 and the house had fallen into ruins by the time I discovered it in 2005. It has been great to breathe life back into this wonderful place.

I am your host and live on the piano nobile so please don't hesitate to ask for help when you are here.

I think one of the things that is special about staying with me is to experience the rhythm of life in a small town. With only 350 people living within our walls, Bettona is the perfect get-away from larger more ‘discovered’ hill towns. The people are friendly, the streets quaint, and the views spectacular. Guests often comment on how our little town works its charms on them. Yet, there’s always something to do — from strolling to the central piazza for a coffee or gelato to dining in one of our lovely restaurants. In the summer there are often concerts or dance performances within the walls. Trips to some of the nearby towns offer all the cultural and art experiences you'd expect without the crowds and at a particularly Umbrian pace.

The apartment is on the top floor of the palazzo and called 'Assisi' because there are views out over the Spoleto Valley toward Assisi. It has its own entrance and contains two bedrooms, a bathroom, full kitchen with marble counters, dining area, and living room. The furniture is a mixture of antique or in the Mission Style and goes beautifully with the rustic stone walls beneath the white washed beamed ceilings. There are wonderful breezes and the apartment is air conditioned as well. A small terrace is just perfect for sitting in the sun and relaxing.

A special welcome goes out to the LGBT community. Know that you are extremely welcome to discover Umbria and come back to relax in the comfort of my home.

As your host, I am happy to help with recommendations on what to see, how to get there, or great places to eat. If you are interested in cooking lessons — for a day or week or just to learn how to make gnocchi or fresh pasta — we are happy to accommodate you.

COOKING LESSONS: A special cooking lesson package with professional chef is also available. Package costs 2250 euros and includes: accommodations at Palazzo Fiumi-LaPlaca; five 3-hour lessons followed by a 5-course lunch. Lessons are taught by Chef Andrea Sposini and take place at his cooking school in Perugia.

TOURS: Make that wedding trip, special birthday, or a much deserved week away with friends or family, even more extraordinary with a customized tour package. Full or half day tours available. a Week in Umbria will help you explore Umbria at a relaxed pace and treat you to a sampling of what this wonderful region has to offer. Special tours of The Saints of Umbria, with special attention to St. Francis of Assisi (San Francesco di Assisi) is offered for a minimum of 4 people. Flexible itineraries allow you to customize your vacation or you can simply spend a week here discovering Umbria on your own.

Oh, I almost forgot, if you'd like home cooked meals, I'd be happy to accommodate you no matter what your dietary needs are. Most guests choose to have a meal prepared the first night of their stay here. It gives us a chance to get to know each other a bit and to talk about what you'd like to see in Umbria. (Coast is 25euro per person and includes wine.)

SPECIAL PARTIES: Palazzo Fiumi-LaPlaca has a beautiful cantina and dining hall on the ground floor which is perfect for special events. Cocktails and Buffet to sit down banquets are available.

About Michael LaPlaca

Sometimes you find a project that changes your life completely. Restoring this palazzo did just that for me. Finishing our fourth season in operation, the palazzo is filled with life and functioning as much more than just a B&B. Becoming a part of the small town of Bettona has also been a revelation for me. We've been welcomed into a community of warm and friendly people where there is always something to do. It is truly and extraordinary place. The dogs and I couldn't be happier sharing our piece of Italy with you.

Michael LaPlaca purchased this apartment in 2005

Why Michael LaPlaca chose Umbria

People always ask 'Why Bettona?' It was all about the palazzo, the adventure of saving a piece of history, and returning the house to its former grandeur. And living in the historic center of a small hill town has allowed us to put down some roots and get to know the people of Bettona.

What makes this apartment unique

This apartment is called Gufo because the tenant when I bought the palazzo was an owl. It has rustic stone walls and a beamed ceiling with a sleeping balcony and queen size bed. The comfortable large room has a kitchen and dining area and living room area and lovely views of the surrounding hills. The town of Bettona is perfectly situated as a base for exploring Umbria. (It's 20 minutes to Perugia or Assisi, 30 to Todi or Spello, 40 to Spoleto, 45 minutes to Gubbio, and an hour to Orvieto.)

It's such a pleasure staying here that some guests just like to kick back and relax at home. And you get to have me as your host. I'll offer help in any way I can — from suggestions on what towns to visit, what restaurants to go to, wineries to enjoy, when and where local festivals are happening, or even renting a car or making reservations for the next leg of your adventure. I'm here to help with whatever you need. If you'd like cooking lessons, I can arrange to have a fantastic chef come and teach your group or I can teach you how to make gnocchi, fresh pasta, or something else using our local ingredients. And, if you'd just like a home cooked meal, I'd be happy to prepare one for you. My job is to make your experience as wonderful as possible.

Car: necessary

The true charm of Bettona is it's peacefulness. It is the perfect base from which to discover all Umbria has to offer. Then, when you come back home to your beautiful apartment, the peacefulness of our quaint village takes over. Stroll to a restaurant for dinner or a coffee and take in the views from just about anywhere. It really is a perfect village.

Beautiful restored Pallazzo in quiet hillside town

  • 3 of 5

Truly, a beautifully restored Pallazzo, owned and managed by a fellow from NYC, in the quiet hillside town of Bettona. The apartment, called Gufo, was spacious, clean and beautiful, with large windows and views of the Umbrian countryside. It is a loft bedroom, so the bath and the great room are on the lower floor, reached by a spiral staircase. There is no microwave, and no radio, or TV. It does have a kitchen, as part of the great room. Betonna is very small and very quiet, and after spending 6 weeks in Florence, it was a pleasant change. It does have two restaurants, but we did not eat at either. It is not a tourist town. Parking is easily found, if you have a car. Assisi, Montefalco and many other Umbrian towns are easily reached by car. Michael made a great dinner on the day we arrived, that was prepared by him and the cooking class that day. Internet was a real problem however. Although Michael said wireless internet was available, it really didn't work. He was unable to fix it while we were there. Hopefully he has fixed it by now. If you stay there, make sure Michael shows you all of the rooms of the Palazzo. They are magnificent. We would have given this property a higher rating if the internet was not an issue. The owner may or may not add to your experience. For us he did not. For the beauty, the Palazzo, and the town, we would however, recommend this property.

Owner's Response: I have had the great pleasure of hosting many wonderful people at Palazzo Fiumi-LaPlaca over the years. As you can see from the other reviews, guests enjoy staying with me and have had nothing but good things to say about their accommodations and the attention they receive. You'll find those reviews to more accurately reflect the experience you will have. (Wifi issues have been addressed.) — Michael LaPlaca
