Flat #2 - 2 BR, Sleeps 6, halfway between St. Joseph & South Haven
We grew up here in SW Michigan. We loved it so much we stayed to raise our family here. We saw so much potential in this vintage motel (originally named the Big 10). We purchased it in 2009 and over the years we have enjoyed the rehabbing process. In 2010, we welcomed our first guests to The Sand Dollar Flat (Homeaway #294139). We continued the remodel & in 2016 we launched The Sand Dune Flat (Homeaway #4473315). We plan to complete the 3rd flat and continue to share our little corner of Michigan with travelers!
Cris purchased this Bungalow in 2009

Nice little place not close to any stores or restaurants just a dollar general .
Perfect spot to connect to all the beaches!
Very charming and kid friendly! We loved our stay.
Great family time
It was such a great time, place was nice and very clean.close to lots of places to discover.
Family Summer vacation
We stayed here for our family summer vacation, it was very cozy and we had everything we needed. Cris was very accommodating and helpful. It was close to a couple of beaches, Rocky Gap was nice. Unfortunately the area was very run down and the only thing close by is a dollar general (which came in very handy) and an Italian place that was very overpriced and not very good. Lots of restaurants and stores boarded. The drives to st Joseph and Saugatuck were not long and we had a great time!!!!!!
We rented out both properties for our family and for my brother- in- laws family. The rentals were clean and comfortable and provided everything we needed. They patio out in front was a great place to gather as the men grilled and then we would end the night in the back by the fire pit. We spend time at both St Joseph and South Haven so the location was ideal. We hope to book again next year
Charming, comfortable, close to many beaches
This little bungalow isn't a lot to see from the outside, but it was super charming inside! The owners have done a great job bringing it back to life! The location was mostly good. It's on a busy highway, where traffic moves very fast. I was worried about that at first, but the backyard is totally fenced off, so it turned out to be fine for the kids.
In general, my family and I enjoyed our time here! There was plenty of room for us (kids are 6 and 9). We LOVED the hammock in the back, and my kids and I did a lot of reading together out there! The kitchen was fairly well equipped (my husband is the cook and he was satisfied with what was provided).
One note: when the owner says bring your own towels, she means it. Save for 2 thin kitchen towels, there were NO towels. We were prepared with bath towels and beach towels and I threw a few washcloths in at the last minute, but I wish I would have brought some hand towels. We also had to make a run to the store for things like bar soap for the shower and coffee filters. The closest market was about 10 miles away and the big grocery was further (20 minutes or so). There is one pizza place down the road, and we ordered carry out one night. It was good, but far too expensive. Unfortunately, there isn't anything else close by. Also, the surrounding area seemed slightly run-down, like you could tell it used to be something more. But I spotted many charming properties around as well. I think this kind of mixed bag is common with beach towns.
That said, it was a great, central location for beach hopping! We spent the first day at Roadside Beach (just a mile away). In the next 3 days, we hit Saugatuck (beautiful!), Jean Klock (very chill), and South Haven (the most interesting, people-wise). Because this property is on the main highway, it's a straight shot to beaches/towns in either direction. We appreciated that a lot.
For our first trip to the Lake Michigan beaches, this was perfect, and I would definitely recommend. Just bring towels!!
