Remodeled in 2012, this custom timber-fame home is located at the base of Wilson Peak on East Wilson Mesa. The house sits on 60 acres and borders National Forest. You can walk out the front door and access a superb trail system, which connects our property to the Wilson Mesa Trail. During summer months the hiking, horse back riding, and mountain biking possibilities are endless. During winter, one can enjoy cross-country skiing and snow shoeing on the same trails. The property boasts a well-stocked, stream-fed trout pond, a mere five-minute walk from the front door. A fenced pasture with lush, native grasses is the perfect place to keep your horses, should you care to head out on a high mountain ride through aspen and pine forests. The home is oriented toward the South to maximize the solar gain that streams through the large windows of our sunroom (also known as the “moon room”). It sits on the edge of a large meadow with stunning views of Wilson Peak and Sunshine Peak.
The house is a comfortable 2500 sq. ft with an open floor plan. As you enter from the north, you’ll come through a generous sized mudroom with ample hooks, and storage for all of your outdoor gear. Walk through a second door and you enter the main living area with timber frame construction throughout; kitchen with vaulted ceilings, dining room, and a cozy living area with a beautiful soapstone wood stove. The modern, industrial-style kitchen has brand new appliances, granite counter tops, and bar seating around a large island. Upstairs is a bedroom with a queen bed, bunkroom that sleeps 6 people, and full bath. Back down the stairs and through the kitchen to the East is the “original” cabin where the TV room, bedroom/sunroom, full bath and upstairs master bedroom lie. The master bedroom has a king bed, and half-bath.
During the summer months there is a large outdoor living space with a deck and patio, which look out across the lush meadow and directly at Wilson and Sunshine Peaks.
There are many kids in the family, so there are plenty of toys. Should you be bringing younger children, we have a pack-n-play and changing table. We can also help line up trustworthy baby sitters as a number of our good friends work and teach at the pre-schools and elementary school in town.
This home is available to rent at all times of the year.
Our parents bought this piece of property in 1970. A few years later they built a small, 800 sq/ft cabin and out-house. For the first 10 years we used the cabin as a summer and winter get-away. In the early eighties my parents added indoor plumbing and electricity, and our family of six moved into the small cabin full-time. In the winter months we would snowcat and snowmobile in and out to attend school in Telluride. Our mom was a middle school teacher and our dad was the local emergency physician. The living quarters were close and the commuting was hard, but we all loved it. Over the years we've all grown up, moved away, and started families of our own. Our loving and generous parents gifted the property to all of the kids in the late 1990s. Thankfully, this property that we endearingly call 'The Mesa,' has remained our homestead where we gather year after year to celebrate being together as a family. A few things have changed over the years; the road is plowed and maintained year-round, and we did a major remodel in 2012 to accommodate everyone's growing families, however; the heart of soul of this special place remains. We hope that you too will visit and enjoy the beauty, peace, and tranquility of our home away from home.
Eri Raley purchased this house in 1970
Our parents love for the outdoors and adventure is what drew them to Telluride in the 1970s. They purchased 60 acres on Wilson Mesa from a Basque sheep herding family. In the late 1990s the land was handed down to the next generation, who have made improvements and remodeled the home over the past 10 years. Having grown up on 'The Mesa' and in the town of Telluride, the area remains near and dear to our hearts. The youngest daughter, Erin and her husband Matt, still live in the area and care-take the property. We all love to ski, hike, climb, raft, fish, and bike in the area. We treasure living on Wilson Mesa, and love being part of the fun and funky community of Telluride.
The view to the South will capture your heart and imagination. Wilson Peak is one of the most filmed and photographed mountains in the United States, and we get to look at it every day, up close and personal. Hiking, biking, skiing, and hunting in the vast National Forest and Wilderness is unmatched. The wide open, lush meadows fill with wildflowers in the summer and glitter with snow in the winter. The aspen and pine forests are home to huge herds of elk, bear, mountain lion, deer and hundreds of birds, hawks, and other fun critters. One could spend a lifetime exploring this area and still discover new and beautiful nooks and crannies every time you set out on an adventure.
There's one word that describes our stay at Muddy Creek Ranch...perfection! From the second we arrived, we felt completely at home. Kara and Andy greeted us with such warmth and gave us all the details about the home and property we needed to feel comfortable but also gave us all the privacy we needed to enjoy our family vacation. The house itself is completely updated, has every amenity you'd need, and is an amazing place for a family to stay on vacation. And then...the views!!! The pictures truly don't do it justice. We could have just sat out on the back patio and stared at the view of Mount Wilson and all the aspen trees forever. It's also a really unique location as it's a super easy drive into Telluride and Mountain Village (about 15 min or so) but you also feel like you are in your own amazing world away from it all. My husband and now call Muddy Creek our "happy place" and we can't wait to stay in our future trips to Telluride area. We wouldn't stay anywhere else!
Muddy Creek Ranch is a wonderful place to stay! You walk out the back door and there are miles of snow, trees and beautiful mountains. You can't beat the view from the back porch.
There are so many things to do! We skied, went snow shoeing, played in the snow, tubed, played games, and where only about twenty minutes from Telluride.
The owners are super nice and helpful and the caretakers were accessible, while giving us complete privacy.
The house is comfortable, wonderfully designed, and just a delight to stay in. The kitchen was exceptionally stocked. Everything was super clean and just cozy.
The road in was surprisingly easy to navigate and clear, and the house is situated in such away as to be private, even though there are a few other houses around the area.
We would recommend Muddy Creek Ranch to anyone who is looking for a comfortable and absolutely gorgeous get away near Telluride. yet hidden away among the mountains.

Perfect...from the clean, comfortable home with a well equipped kitchen, to the expansive views from every room, to the quiet and serene location...we loved this place and will be back again.
We stayed at this amazing home for my son's pre-wedding week. Our family of 14 were comfortably accommodated with every bedroom quiet and cozy. The kitchen was amazing with our every need available. We stayed for 5 nights and cooked most of our meals either in the kitchen or on the grill. The view from the house was so majestic, it was tempting to just sit on the back deck for the day. But we traveled the short distance to Telluride or other nearby small towns for the many activities, golf, horseback riding, rafting, fishing, and shopping. It was a delightful visit and we hope to return. Thank you, Erin.
Telluride has breathtaking mountain scenery. The area boasts world class skiing, mountain biking, hiking, 4WD jeep roads, fly-fishing, rafting, climbing, and road biking. There are a number of amazing music and entertainment festivals through out the year such as the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Telluride Blue and Brews, Telluride Film Festival, and Telluride Jazz Festival. There are dozens of award-winning restaurants, a lively bar and entertainment scene, as well as wonderful shops. People who visit this magical community fall in love with it, and end up coming back year after year.
