'A Grayton Tradition' "The Washaway" is a historic beach house and a local treasure located in the heart of Grayton Beach. Built in the late 1800's by Capt. Gray and later used as the Coast Guard Headquarters for a cavalry unit during WWII, this home survived a major hurricane in 1926 (but was almost washed away), as well as standing strong during Hurricane Eloise in the late 1970's, and Hurricane Opal in the fall of 1995. It is a Grayton classic and centrally located just ½ block west of the famous Red Bar Restaurant, as well as numerous other dining and shopping amenities nearby.
Relax on wide, wraparound porches while enjoying gulf breezes and breath-taking views of the Gulf of Mexico and Western Lake. Located directly on the sugar sand, just one house off the beach, step back in time with the unique turn of the century floor plan that adds to the timeless appeal of Grayton's oldest home. An eight foot breezeway separates the kitchen and bathrooms from the core of the house, where the main living space is located.

A Grayton Tradition is a real treasure!!!
Grayton Tradition is a truely amazing, historic home. The pictures on the walls are facinating and take you back in time to understand the past with this lovely home. It is spacious and beautifully decorated. Our family enjoyed our stay...
Beach days like Old Grayton
We have been coming to Grayton for almost 20 years and always felt curious and intrigued by Wash-Away, now Grayton Tradition. We were so happy to see it had been restored and listed as a rental. Love that it is dog-friendly. While a lot has been built up around it since we first saw it, the views are still wonderful. The decks were shaded and allowed for great reading, painting, eating, and playing with the dogs.
This was a great house even for just the two of us and our two terriers. We loved the fact that the house wasn't renovated, but only restored to retain its original character. I'm not sure I want them to enclose the kitchen and bathrooms!
The house probably isn't for everyone - lots of openings so there will be some bugs but Rivard was responsive. The charter boats and walkers to the beach start coming before dawn so it can be a little noisey but most were respectful of us being there. We love the location - can walk to the RedBar, get food to go, hear the lovely musicians at Chiding's. Would definitely go back if the prices stays reasonable for what it is.
Thank you for your feedback! We are so happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay at the Wash Away (A Grayton Tradition). We agree with you that its unique and historical floor plan adds an old time charm and character to the property that simply cannot be found elsewhere. Its central location to both the beach and great restaurants is just the cherry on top. We certainly hope to have you back the next time you are in town!
Awesome House in Favorite Location
We loved the history & solidity of the house. The layout of the kitchen and bathrooms separate from the bedrooms and living areas was OK. It may have been a bother in hot summer months, but we were there in October and could spend a lot of time outside. Bathrooms were sufficient, but kitchen very small for a house meant to accommodate so many people. I would not recommend the house for large groups or during summer. If the owners would just put some money into updating the molded plastic outdoor furniture, kitchen plates & glasses, and perhaps the $10 broken blind in the upstairs bathroom, the house would seem more complete. In October, there were a lot of palmetto bugs outside & inside. I'm overly sensitive to this, but I can only imagine what they would be like in summer months. I'm sure management would have sent pest control if requested, but that's not something I felt like dealing with. Not recommended for young children, age 55+, or people with disabilities.
Comfort on Grayton Beach!
We very much enjoyed our week at A Grayton Tradition. It is a historic beach house (one of very few left) right on the beach at Grayton and has the modern amenities. We spent a lot of our week sitting on the wrap-around porches or on the deck looking at the gulf, lake and beach town. Beds and sofas comfy and plenty of tvs, well stocked kitchen- all we needed for a special week. There were 9 of us- 6 adults and 3 kids and we all had plenty of space. We like the kitchen and bathrooms across the porch, a unique feature of the historic house, because it is more quiet that way. Our two dogs- Candy and Sparky - love the porches and deck and walking around Grayton. We come each year and highly recommend A Grayton Tradition- a 5 star for all of us!
Hi Amy, we are very pleased that you enjoyed your stay at A Grayton Tradition. It is a very popular house given its blend of old world and modern amenities. We look forward to having you back in 2016!
A Grayton Tradition
Wow, what a vacation! We had such a great time at A Grayton Tradition. It was a perfect fit for our family. The house literally sits on the beach sand and has the most beautiful views of the Gulf of Mexico. It's also just as close to two local restaurants in Grayton Beach that were an easy 2 minute walk for our family! This house has a lot of history behind it which makes it more than just a beach house. We definitely plan on making this house our Grayton Beach Tradition!!
Justin, we are so happy that you enjoyed your vacation at A Grayton Tradition. As a historic home on the beach in old Grayton, it is one of very popular among our guests. Come visit again soon!
Loved Staying at A Grayton Tradition!
We loved staying at A Grayton Tradition (the Washaway) right on the beach sand in Old Grayton Beach. The house was perfect for us! Old world charm and new world comfort. The house sits on the sand and has views of the gulf and lake. Grayton Beach is a wonderful little beach town with a lot of local flavor and laid back pace that we really enjoyed. The beach was beautiful with very few people and was a quick stroll from the house. We had 2 families staying there all week (4 adults and 4 kids) and we had plenty of room to spread out, never feeling crowded. The decor was beautiful and beachy, like you'd expect and the house had everything you needed (pots/pans, coffee pot and plenty of cutlery/plates/glasses and towels galore). The wrap-around porches and swing were our favorite spot for the morning sunrise and afternoon sunset. I can't say enough good things about the house and our vacation experience! We were close to all the beach towns nearby (Seagrove, Destin, etc) and the Publix and WalMart were close by, which was very convenient. We loved it and look forward to our next visit back. Definitely a 5-star!
Deidra, we are so happy that you enjoyed your stay at A Grayton Tradition (the Washaway). It is in a perfect location on the beach and offers a historic house with comfort. We look forward to having you back soon!
