About Mary Doughty
I grew up in Horicon, and wanted to return for the summers so that my kids could experience everything this area has to offer.
Mary Doughty purchased this Studio in 1993
Why Mary Doughty chose Oak Grove
The location is perfect! It is a very short drive, or bike ride to discover the abundance of outdoor activities available, in addition to what's outside your front door.

Our stay at The Rock River Retreat was very appropriate for the activities we chose to enjoy which was to experience the Horicon Marsh and its eco environment. Although the rainy weather was 'for the birds', the Boathouse, was a delightful way to enjoy and view the experience. A top-notch way to spend time in the Horicon Marsh area, for, in our situation, two people. The Proprietor, Mary D. was a pleasant host.
Very comfortable & cute. Enjoyed drinking my coffee on the patio and watching the morning sky. If you forgot to bring something it is in the cottage! Will be returning next year for sure and will bring a fishing pole.
Cute little place, great location on the river
Spent 2 nights, it worked out nicely for me and my husband. Loved the warm and whimsical decor, even some fresh-picked flowers waiting for us. Clean. Lots of lighting options, plenty of windows/doors to open if you like. Weather unusually hot, but A/C and ceiling fan kept us cool. King bed. Not super roomy overall (it is a boat house, after all), but pretty good use of space and the higher ceilings lent a larger look to it. Certainly roomy enough for the 2 of us. Bottled water is provided if you don't like well water. Nice shower option with an additional hand-held tool. Kitchen small but had all we needed. The best part was sitting outside enjoying the quiet river, with a nice breeze, and watching for fish or muskrats or birds. There were 3 seating options, comfortable chairs. Plus a hammock. As others have commented, there's a little traffic noise over the nearby bridge, but it wasn't particularly noticeable or bothersome to us at all, not a factor. The river is a very peaceful view with only a couple homes nearby, trees & lawns, and on the opposite shore mostly just cattails (or whatever it was), so while not secluded, it felt fairly private. We'd visit again!
We stayed her for the weekend, just my husband and I. It is so quiet and peaceful. No one bothers you. Middle of no where. No car noise. Hardly any boats. So peaceful. The cabin is very clean and very cute! We loved it. Perfect for the 2 of us. Mary the owner was very nice and helpful. I'd definitely recommend this place
This is a very nice place to stay. Had everything we needed!
Had a wonderful time!
Just a wonderful cabin. Decorated so nicely. The location is on a beautiful setting. The hammock and fire pit were my favorite amenities. I needed to use heat a couple nights, and that was very toasty. Birds were plentiful, including a visit from an eagle. The fish plopping on the water surface. Starry skies at night. This property is so beautiful I can not do it justice in words. The bed is big and fluffy with down pillows and comforters. Wood was restocked per request as I used plenty. I want to return again. Mary was responsive, but never intrusive, ever. I had total privacy. The grocery store was a quick 5-10 minute trip. The property is only a 2 hour drive from Chicago making a weekend getaway an easy trip. I really recommend this studio cabin highly.
