Really cool house in the midst of the woods and near the boat rental dock

  • 4 of 5

What a classic cottage. Actually part of a camp that was once on the property, the house has all kinds of luxuries that make it a great place to stay. Great kitchen and awesome master bath. The beds are on the smaller side. Just know this going in. The two singles in the upstairs room are more like cots. Great screened porches. Lake view is down the hill so this is not the place to stay if you want to be right on the is a stroll to the dock along a path through the woods. Our two small dogs enjoyed the stay as well.

Our stay was too short!

  • 4 of 5

We were at the House on the Hill for 5 nights in June, 2017. This was our first family vacation at the lake - usually going to the beach. The house was spacious and very relaxing. We enjoyed both screen porches throughout the days and late at night. It would have been nice to have more lighting, however, as we had a problem putting together our jigsaw puzzle on the dining room table. One of the lamps was broken in the living room (the owner had told me that prior to our arrival) but no one came and repaired it while we were there. The kitchen was great - very spacious with plenty of cooking supplies. We did need more room in the refrigerator and pantry because there were so many items already in both. That needs a good cleanout. Access to the lake was really good. We rented a pontoon and stayed out in it most of days. The guys did fish from the dock one night. It was too shallow to swim at the dock which was disappointing. Lake Burton was simply beautiful and perfect for tubing which my granddaughters enjoyed. The walk to the lake from the house was pretty steep, so we took the road and one car for those who could not walk it. That was no problem at all. The master bedroom/bath was good, although I have to admit a king size bed would have been nice. The loft bedroom was perfect for 3 of my grandchildren to sleep, but the bedroom in the basement was hard to find and somewhat disappointing. You might want to consider upgrading the bed sizes. It was a special surprise to learn that this house was a part of Camp Cherokee. Both my daughters attended the camp right across the cove from the house. My daughter enjoyed reminiscing about her camping days with her children. We had a great time and would consider renting again. The owner was very professional and attentive.

Loved it mostly

  • 4 of 5

Great location for our family retreat; plenty of room for 8 adults, but limited for small children. Upstairs only suitable for older children. Loved the kitchen and living room, though wife thought it was too dark. Somewhat cluttered; every surface covered with owners stuff. Good condition appliances. Excellent bathrooms, but upstairs really has no bathroom - must come downstairs. Dock was good for kids fishing, but too shallow and muddy for swimming. There is a good boat rental place just across the cove. Excellent communications responses from owner. Directions hard to follow because signs have changed and we were off road on my GPS. No Verizon cellphone service there, but ATT was OK. Downstairs bedroom good but access is through a dark and scary storage area, not safe for small children. Guest room could use a queen bed; a double is smaller than it use to be.

Beautiful setting. Beautiful home.

We were very comfortable in this house. It was so peaceful and beautiful. Our teenage grandchildren fished and canoed. I would recommend this rental to anyone.

Thanksgiving in the mountains

  • 5 of 5

We decided we wanted a Thanksgiving in the mountains where the boys, and dog, could play and we could relax. Traveling from various parts of the country, 11 of us met at Cherokee Point and had a Norman Rockwell type of holiday. The cabins were perfect, the kitchen fully stocked with all the tools needed to create a proper feast, and the grounds ideal for outdoor games. Jim was very responsive to any needs we had. Great hiking trails nearby and the lake 100 yards from the house. We'd definitely book again. (Hint: For the initial arrival try to arrive during daylight as finding the cabin in the dark can be a bit tricky.)

Ridiculously awesome, Rockwell-like Thanksgiving

  • 5 of 5

We had three family parties, two arriving from VA and one from TX. We had five children from 5-19, and adults from 40'ish to 70'ish. We also brought our Great Dane. The setting is very tranquil and rejuvenating. We spent a day exploring waterfalls and hiking, a day at the house shooting arrows and playing yard games, a day antiquing, and a day exploring Helen.

The pictures the owners have are good, but the place has more space than depicted and seems nicer than we were expecting. The Pillbox, which only has one pic of the outside, is where we stayed. It is rustic -- think cabin, but we were fine and loved having our own space.

Additionally, the owners have stocked everything. There are games, movies, puzzles, linens, spices, etc., which we tried not to abuse, but it's hard when you feel so welcome.

Lastly, we had an issue with the heating in the Pillbox, which hadn't been even advertised as housing in our reservation. The owners, the day after Thanksgiving, had someone out at the cabin within half an hour. We don't expect everything to go smoothly, but we do look for responsiveness. The Bells did not disappoint. Very classy operation.

This is our fifth VRBO experience and probably our favorite.
