Spacious with room to move

  • 4 of 5

We had 14 adults and 7 kids (14-2 years old)...we had plenty of space to sleep and room to move. The owner was extremely accommodating and prompt to answer questions. We loved the kayaks. We brought a pontoon to use and fished, tubed, & downfall; the water is a bit of a hike down the stairs. We had an older couple and 1 on crutches, which made it difficult. There is ample kitchen space and room to cook. The gathering space and the deck was great for socialized and relaxing. There is a washer/dryer, which we used to do a load of towels. Great space, would go back!

Too much house for the homeowner

  • 2 of 5

On arrival, we had to enter through the garage which smelled horrible of rotten food and dirty diapers. That odor remained for 5 days. We were told to take the garbage down the driveway on Monday but garbage didn’t come until Tuesday so we had to haul it up and down for 2 days. For nearly $500/night we shouldn’t have to do any cleaning or hauling of refuse. The owner knew a year in advance that we planned to have an outdoor wedding on location so I would’ve expected some extra TLC for landscaping but it looked awful with an overgrowth of weeds and bushes. We cut down an ugly dead tree by the lake so it wasn’t in the background of every photo. The owner knew the jetted tub did not function for at least 3 weeks and didn’t tell us about it until the day before we arrived. When I tell my landlord something is broken he fixes it within 48 hours. The basement was wet and dank/musty smelling so bad my parents couldn’t sleep down there. No surprise after seeing the gutters filled with stuff, preventing proper drainage away from the house. Fans were going to help dry the carpet but the 2 dehumidifiers we found were not plugged in and running, which we set up. The odor is still present but not as bad. It took 4 days for it to dissipate enough to go down there. The basement bathroom door doesn’t close so it’s not a useable bathroom unless you don’t mind not having privacy. The house definitely doesn’t sleep 20 and without the basement couldn’t sleep the 10 of us that stayed overnight. I picked up garbage off the balcony, not realizing until hours later that it was insulation, which gave me hives for 5 days on both arms. There is either a small animal living in the house or a large bees nest. Our guess is a large bees nest kicking the insulation out due to the large number of wasps flying in and out of the eaves. We had to take down the wedding dishes and linens off the balcony tables, clean it & move outdoor furniture so we didn’t get insulation in our food. That’s not something you expect to be doing in the middle of your wedding day. We were not told there wasn’t air conditioning until the day before arrival. It’s not listed as “no a/c” and I would expect a house like that to have the usual amenities. I never would’ve rented it if I had known because my dad gets bad heat stroke that puts him in the hospital. WI summer ranges 40+ to 90+ degrees so ac is expected. The homeowner needs to put more time, effort, & maintenance in this home before renting it out

Great get-a-way!

  • 5 of 5

What a great time at this home! Perfect setting in the beautiful northwoods of Wisconsin! Comfortable and spacious with every detail thought about. Couldn't believe how accommodating the owner was! We got plenty of time in the kayaks and watched th eagles flying overhead. Thank you so much for everything! Definately coming back here!

Did not meet a few basic and minor expectations. NO Air Conditioning in Summer

  • 3 of 5

Did not catch that this gorgeous large home does not have air conditioning until too late to change plans. Temps during the week averaged in the mid to high 80's. I believe 'No AC' should be listed under the amenities just like 'No smoking' is. Just assumed a home that is 4,800 square feet and sleeps 20 would have it. Only caught it by reading the one review that mentions it much later after booking it. And true it did cool down at night but the bedrooms took a while to cool and there was zero escape from the heat during the day. The lowest level (basement) bedroom was very musty and lacked any air flow. It sleeps 20 if you bring a lot of air beds. The futons were not suitable for sleeping and one of them had a broken leg. Our first impression upon walking in was that it has a ton of open air space, was hot temperature wise and then a crank out window just fell out as it was cranked out. We fixed that temporarily but it set a tone. Next we started to prepare food and the gas grill tank was empty. Someone went into town to refill as no spare full tank was on hand. The jets in the 'jetted tub' did not work, the mixing valve in the upstairs bathroom failed and would not allow anything but cold water out of it, the lower level shower had minimal water pressure so you had to stand directly under it, the toilet seat in the master bath just split (replaced), and the fridge could not handle the heat, humidity and froze up the first day. We lost some food and had to revert to several coolers and bags of ice. We defrosted it but it could never keep up with the heat/humidity and use. We trusted our coolers. Sadly we had to purchase extra coolers because we prefer to just buy local and not haul groceries up. The steps to and from the lake are a workout but that was no surprise.

On the positive side the owner was easy to get a hold of and friendly, the deck was awesome, the view was great, swimming off the dock was great for the kids, and the overall feeling was a private getaway.

None of the negatives ruined our vacation but I will more closely review all the comments before booking. We had a great time in fact. I just expect AC in a home like this just like I expect power windows, locks and an automatic transmission in a rental car.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the review. I apologize for the disappointment in your stay. The home is located in northern Wisconsin. Occasionally, the weather is warm enough to open the windows :). The refrigerator is less than a year old and works perfectly when closed properly.

Great location; big house; cool raised back deck; beautiful views and lake

  • 4 of 5

Only one suggestion is to update/buy more beds; like put 2 queen beds in master etc. The kids took over the bunks but we ran out of beds for the adults. Otherwise, everything was great.

The fishing was a 10/10, we caught 4 SMB in the 3-5 lb range along with a bunch of others and caught small(er) Walleyes as a bonus - I was very pleasantly surprised. Be careful of the stumps/logs because it acts like a Flowage with some floating debris.
