After seeing such great reviews we settled on this property for our own family vacation - 8 of us in all. Our party had two active grandparents, 3 adults and 3 kids age 10, 3 and 2.
The expansive gardens, swing set, and private access to the red sand river beach made it a good choice. The main feature for us though was the property itself - it's layout was perfect for our group with 2 bedrooms at each end it made it relatively peaceful for sleeping arrangements. So hard to find for larger families like ours.
The open plan dining and living area was large enough to accommodate us all, whether it was playing, dining or relaxing. Supplies were plentiful too - lots of bath and beach towels and no scrimping on paper towels, toilet tissue, soap powder (for the washer/dryer in the cottage), etc.
The little ones were okay, with supervision, navigating the steps down to the beach and water shoes or sandals were worn at all times on the beach due to sharp shell edges and stones, etc., for safety reasons. Searching for hermit crabs, starfish and shells were a common pastime at low tides!
Nearest town for grocery shopping etc was Montague - about 20 minute drive - Atlantic Superstore and Sobey's along with a few restaurants, a bakery, ice cream stops, etc.
Charlottetown is about a 45 minute drive - we spent several days there during our two week stay. Other National Park beaches were anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes by car and worth the drive.
If you wanted to drive (versus walking) to the nearest ocean beach it was a short 4 minute drive to Honey Bee Lane and you will likely have it to yourselves!
Lovely big cottage with all the comforts of home and more! Great place to have a vacation with a large or extended family. I would agree with everything said in the other reviews and add a few comments. We enjoyed the curious foxes who came around morning and evening, sometimes in the afternoon, stretching out in the sunshine. They were a lovely blend of red and silver fox colouring.
We loved the privacy of the place So many cottages are one of many in a row, but not this one! Disabled family member was accommodated well but you might want to ask specific questions re accessibility depending on your own individual needs. We had a power chair as well as a manual chair and found there was room in the master suite to "park" the power chair which was nice. The large telescope in the closet was a nice surprise and the golf clubs also got use. The lawn was a good size for us to have many games of bocce and washer toss! The bugs were intermittent and the almost ever present breeze helps with that too. Bring a hat if you are there in horse fly/deer fly season (we were) and repellent although personally I can't stand wearing it and still had lots of quality outside time. Sitting out after dusk though you would want it, as you would anywhere in the country. Beds were very comfortable and there are lots of windows. Lovely to have the breeze through the windows at night. Dishwasher worked well. Lovely large dining table - at times there were a number of us stuck to our laptops and also a gang around it for dinner. For us it has always been difficult finding accessible accommodation which also accepts dogs so this was perfect. And there was plenty of room for family visiting from another province.
I didn't check Families with young children as personally I would like a place with fewer steps to the shore but it depends on the amount of supervision needed. We had an 8 year old for most of the week and he was fine but the beach is not great for making sandcastles or lying on although a short walk or drive will get you to one the is. Great spot to have an infant (highchair and playpen or whatever they are called nowadays are supplied). Cottage was very clean too.
I stayed here with my family of four (with two school aged kids) - plus three seniors and a teenager. It was a delightful stay for eight of us in total. The cottage is comfortable, beautifully appointed = with thoughtful additions like maps, tourist brochures, board games, wifi etc... Beds and rooms are cozy, modern, comfortable, perfectly clean. Lots of hardwood and fresh quilts. There is plenty of room in the four bedrooms. The cottage has one full bathroom - plus a clever shared bathroom in an adjoined family suite with shower and toilet in a small room that joins the two. Each of the two rooms in the family suite has its own sink and mirror so bedtime/toothbrushing etc.. is no problem. No line-ups at the bathroom! (There's a jacuzzi tub in the master bedroom, too!)
We enjoyed clam digging in the bay - and didn't mind the 5 to 10 minute hike to the bigger, more sandy beach..... though some might like to know that while the cottage is directly on the water (what a view), it is not a sandy windswept beach. More of a rocky beach that's great for clamming and kayaking. We didn't mind.... It also seemed fine and fun for kayaking - and there are boats available in the shed. It was wet when we were there - and there here are plenty of mosquitoes. Bring your insect reppellant!
And do not hesitate to stay at this spacious, beautiful, well situated and well-appointed cottage. We'd go back in a heart-beat.
A very well appointed accommodation. It is roomy with 4 bedrooms for our large family of 6 adults and 3 children. A family reunion destination for us. This is an excellent location for world class beaches, golf, dining, clamming and sight-seeing. Best Beach - Basin Head, Best Golf - Crowbush Cove, Dundarave and Brudenell. Very good - Belfast Highlands (9 holes)
Best Dining - Prim Point Chowder House (visit if after 9 holes at Belfast Highlands); Georgetown - Clam Diggers Beach House, Cardigan - Windows on the Water, Cardigan Lobster Suppers, Dundarave/ Brudenell dining room - **Make reservations in all cases
Local support from Tracy was very timely and helpful and much appreciated.
Our family group (6 adults + 3 children) spent a week at this lovely cottage last week of August 2015. Our most enjoyable time was spent on the secluded beach at the walkout from the cottage where we paddled the kayaks across Boughten Bay, looked for sea shells and oysters while the sea lions played and feasted nearby. We enjoyed a lobster supper in Cardigan (about 20 minutes away) and took in a summer fair just off Hwy 4 nearby.
The cottage had nearly all that we desired and was well kept inside and out. Stock up on groceries since the nearest super-market in Montague is about 35 minutes drive away.
Went to PEI with my siblings and while the weather was not great (15 in July) we had a good time. The beach is located in a bay so there were lots of crabs and it was not great for swimming but the ocean was only a 5 minute walk away. The bonus of the bay was that we found mussels and oysters and had a couple of fresh seafood meals that we collected ourselves. Tracy (caretaker for this property) was absolutely fabulous and showed us some true east coast hospitality. All in all, the property was exactly as advertised and we had a great time.
