Overview

About the property

One bedroom, 1 bath, living room w/kitchenette, stunning pond views on 8 acres

Located in the historic village of Chimayo, New Mexico this property is ideally located to tour all the sites of Northern New Mexico and return to the peace, beauty and comfort at Paradise Pond. Paradise means water - a large half acre pond sits in front of the casita. Acequias (traditional irrigation ditches) flow down the East and West sides of the property by water rights agreements going back to the 1690's. The Pond overflow creates a charming stream that snakes back and feeds a wetlands area before pouring into the Santa Cruz River - all on our 8 acre lot. All this water creates large cottonwood forests and lovely garden areas. Miles of hiking are also minutes away on BLM land where you can hike, bike or horseback ride through the red rock barrancas for miles. All the attractions of Northern New Mexico are within day trip distance - Santa Fe, Taos, Abiquiu, Ojos Caliente, Indian reservations, Nambe, too many to mention them all.

The casita is one bedroom with a king bed, a living room/kitchen combination room with a kiva fireplace and large glass patio doors with the pastoral view of the pond and fields, 1 bathroom with a tub/shower and a private patio. It is connected to the main house through a sunroom. Owners will help you plan your trips or give you total privacy. Private entrance, lots of parking. The living room includes a full size futon bed. Sleeps 2-3.

Chimayo is the home of the Sanctuario most well known for it's Easter pilgramage still practiced by many locals. Pilgrams walk day and night to come to Chimayo for the Easter holiday. The Sanctuario is open for visitors and is still an active congregation. The traditions of Chimayo are still practiced today including the room of blessed healing dirt. You will also find the best vendors of Chimayo authentic chili there and sample it's green and red goodness. Historians credit Chimayo with having the most intact (still lived in) Spanish Colonial Plaza in New Mexico. Many if not most of the residents of Chimayo are descendants of the Spanish settlers from the 1600's. A museum open in the summers next to Ortega's Weaving Shop will explain. Many art galleries and weavers are in Chimayo and the region. There is a wonderful local restaurant with beautiful hillside tables called 'El Rancho de Chimayo' that has great classic northern New Mexico meals.

Paradise Pond is perfect for artists, writers, photographers and others who want a peaceful and inspiring natural place to work. For the adventurous it's also centrally located for day trips: 35 minutes to Santa Fe, 60 minutes to the Santa Fe Ski Basin, 55 minutes to Taos, 45 minutes to Ojo Caliente Hot Springs, 45 minutes to Abiquiu (and Ghost Ranch) or Bandelier National Park. There are hidden treasures throughout the region and the hosts have a lot of knowledge of some off the beaten path spots to visit. We will help you plan your trips if you need local advice. Many events are also worthwhile such as the Native American Ceremonial Dances, Santa Fe's numerous Markets, the Christmas Eve Canyon Road Walk and many more.

So stay and relax or go exploring or both. Either way you will enjoy your stay in beautiful Northern New Mexico.

Please be aware, there is no television in the casita and our internet can be very slow at times.

About Jan Deligans

Tom is a Solar Project Manager for Positive Energy in Santa Fe and Jan is a lifetime student of growing food and living sustainably. This is their biggest project yet - a 3200 square foot active and passive solar house with solar radiant heat, solar hot water, and the water in the house is all rain catchment. The eight acres will be developed into a working organic farm and permaculture food forest. If you have interest in energy or food sustainability we will be glad to give you that tour of the house and grounds.

Jan Deligans purchased this house in 2012

Why Jan Deligans chose Chimayo

After living south of Santa Fe for eleven years, Tom and Jan looked around for a place that might allow for a large hobby farm. When they saw Paradise Pond, that was it. Perfectly located in a traditional acequia village that still operates in the traditional way of the local people digging the acequias by hand each year and creating community and distributing water through the work of the local people - no fossil fuels required. Throughout the world there are few viable acequias left. Some of the best are in Northern New Mexico. Tom and Jan are thrilled to have found such a unique and beautiful spot and want to share it with others.

What makes this house unique

This house and property was developed in 1997 by Frances Harwood, a well known local anthropologist and solar pioneer. She lived here completely off grid - but this isn't your usual conception of an off grid house. She combined abundance, elegance and beauty with ecological nature-based solutions to create an oasis of beauty that also provides own energy and water. She founded Ecoversity in Santa Fe and was a true visionary in eco living. Her untimely death in 2004 for a while left her vision behind. We want to honor what she started and have felt that her vision was in kindred spirits with our own. In the Santa Fe tradition, her work does live on and we are enjoying discovering all the wonders of her life's work through this land and this house.

Since we only have the one vacation rental, we can provide the service you want to make your vacation ideal for you. If you need quiet and privacy, that's what you will get. If you prefer someone to help you plan your day, we can do that too. Let us know if you need something unique - this is a unique place and you deserve some individual attention.

Owner's Response: It was so delightful to host you - you were wonderful guests. In the winter months the sun rises directly over the pond in our view and I'm so glad you were early birds up to enjoy it. Look forward to seeing you again. Cheers, Jan and Tom

Best week in New Mexico

  • 5 of 5

What a unique and wonderful place — water is everywhere in Minnesota, but we didn't expect to find a New Mexico casita on a pond and were thoroughly delighted by every aspect, indoors and out. Such a refreshing place to come "home" to after a day of exploring the towns and hills around Chimayo. Jan and Tom have created a comfortable home away from home right next to their own home (but with privacy) and we liked learning about how they manage the pond and property. Plus that espresso machine! We tried to be back by dusk every day to enjoy a simple dinner and the day ending over the pond - heavenly. Comfortable bed, spacious rooms, views of pond, wildlife, sky and mountains, everything we needed to relax, and beautiful art everywhere. Favorite restaurants: Rancho de Chimayo and El Paragua. Outings/hiking to Ghost Ranch, Abiquiu, the White Place, Bandeleier, Los Alamos, Taos and the high road, Ojo Caliente. We'd already been in Santa Fe for several days, but that would have been an easy drive, too. Loved exploring the fiber arts in the area: EVFAC in Espanola, Centinela weaving, and Ortega's and Trujillo's. We knew the pueblos would be closed (and will come back one day to see them) but the influence of all the converging cultures in New Mexico is evident everywhere around Chimayo, and fascinating. Relaxing breakfasts every morning looking at the pond while we planned our day. We were amazed at the beauty of the landscape in the "off-season" — silver cottonwoods and rose-gold willow lined every river, apricot trees in Chimayo just began to bloom when we left. Truly a one-of-a-kind place. We're looking forward to returning.

Peaceful retreat near Chimayo

  • 5 of 5

Staying at Paradise Pond Casita was a perfect end to a busy trip. The pond and all of the wildlife (ducks, nesting Canada geese, beavers, frogs) were fascinating and relaxing to watch and listen to. We were able to join the pilgrims on the walk to the Sanctuario at Chimayo on Good Friday and enjoyed eating authentic New Mexican cuisine at Rancho de Chimayo restaurant. Tom was a great host and we look forward to meeting Jan during a future visit. Loved the art and decoration of the casita and A+ Espresso machine. Thank you for everything!

Quiet, comfortable, peaceful. A little spot of paradise.

  • 5 of 5

After the hustle and bustle of Santa Fe and Flagstaff it was so refreshing to kick back and recharge at this charming little casita located just north of Santa Fe. You can sit on the patio and watch the sun come up over the red rock hills while you observe the beavers and ducks in the pond. You are doing this while enjoying an espresso, from a coffee shop quality machine no less. Tom and Jan are great, personable and helpful. They have a lot of good tips to enjoy this quiet and historic area. Take advantage of that. El Rancho de Chimayo restaurant is a must stop. Great authentic Northern New Mexico food in a historic setting. Some of the dishes use a particular Chile that is grown by Tom and Jan's neighbor. Get that! Great location also. Ideally situated for a day trip up to Taos, just off the high road between Santa Fe and Taos. We were only there for three days, not enough. I would not hesitate to recommend them to a friend, just as I would not hesitate to stay there again.

Casita Paradise

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at this perfect casita on the pond. Inside, the casita the kitchen is well equiped, the living area cosy, and the king size bed is extremely comfortable. Outside, the patio on the pond is the perfect place to watch the wildlife and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. Our hosts Jan and Tom were extremely helpful with lots of suggestions for places to hike, towns to visit, and good shopping and restaurants. They have an extensive library with all kinds of guide books and maps. And of course the coffee maker! We highly recommend this unique and beautiful property.

Paradise is a good description!

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay at Paradise Pond and hopefully we will return in the future. The casita is well-stocked (even an espresso machine) and very comfortable. The property is absolutely beautiful with the beautiful pond, trees, views of the mesa, and interesting wildlife. We really appreciate it as a place to be near all the wonderful places to visit in New Mexico but also a quiet respite from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Tom and Jan are terrific hosts - they could not be friendlier or more helpful!
