About Mary Wilson Lovelady

This home was built by my grandparents in 1904. I lived there in my childhood and then restored the family home years later.

Why Mary Wilson Lovelady chose Shenandoah Valley

Although this home has been renovated, I kept many of the original features that carry guests back in time. For example, some ceilings are constructed of wormy chestnut wood; the stairs are narrow; the pantry ceiling is lower. Several antique furniture pieces remain there for your enjoyment. Truly, many guests have called this house 'charming.'

What makes this farmhouse unique

When I visit The Wilson House, my favorite spots include a fire pit area in the back yard, the front porch swing, the front yard's deck, and a cool spot under a huge sugar maple tree in the front yard.

Peaceful Place

  • 5 of 5

Excellent 2 night stay. Charming 100 year-old farm house. Very comfortable. Lots of space -- small rooms but lots of them. Every comfort and convenience provided. Everything was extremely clean. Well-equiped kitchen, lots of supplies. Only need to bring food. In case you forgot anything, theres several stores and restaurants in Monterey about 8 miles away. Good DSL wifi. Cell phone worked at the house via LAN connection, but there was zero reception in the surrounding area. Mary was a very good remote host, and was quick to respond to emails.

Very peaceful and quiet. Wonderful views of the valley and surrounding hills from the front porch. Amazing sunsets. I found some binoculars in the living room and enjoyed bird watching. Good location for star gazing - very dark and almost no lights, though large trees around the house prevented it from being ideal for telescopes. There were fewer trees outside the gate, but then unruly cattle were a hazard.

Cattle sometimes collected near the front gate and on the driveway, and could make arrivals and departures challenging. You might need to wait an hour for them to wander off, or drive very slowly. Sometimes one or more would bolt through the gate as I was driving out. They seemed to crave the lush green grass around the house, but eventually would agree to leave. Hazards of life in the country I suppose...

Highly recommended. Hope to return soon!

Our Family Favorite

  • 5 of 5

Our family has been coming to the Wilson House for years. Perched on a hill with a splendid view of the Alleghenies, this getaway provides the comforts of home with the feeling of timelessness. Whether you catch the breeze while nestled with a good book on the porch, hike up the mountain behind the house, cycle on the back roads, or watch the sunset while savoring a meal on the deck, everything feels unhurried and peaceful. We always hate to leave and always vow to return.

Most beautiful country getaway

  • 5 of 5

We have been coming to The Wilson House for several years now and absolutely fall in love each and every time!! From the calming mountain views, to the brisk morning breeze, the porch swing and a cup of coffee are amazing times to watch the sunrise and enjoy the birds on the bird feeders in the yard! The country smell of the house brings back so many fond childhood memories, the house is so sweet and charming and has every amenity that you can need on vacation! The fire pit in the back with the picnic table is an awesome added bonus for s'more making and story telling with our toddlers! Mary is an absolute treat to deal with and the sweetest lady you'll ever get to talk to! If you get the opportunity, you'll love it here! We try to go several times a year as its so relaxing and beautiful! Trails behind the house to walk with great scenery and the trout hatchery just down the road to catch fresh fish to cook as well as Ginseng Mountain farm raised grass fed steaks are to die for! All fresh local ingredients!! This is an opportunity you don't want to miss!

A week of bliss

  • 5 of 5

High on a hill, nestled in green meadows -- the Wilson House is so quiet and peaceful! You're not far from all the attractions of Monterey and Warm Springs, but the serenity begins the moment you turn into the lane. Wind up the hill and there's the charming farmhouse. Step inside -- all is bright and breezy, shiny and clean, clean, clean. Mary has provided for your every comfort and convenience. Open the windows and let in the fresh country air. Relax on the swing on the front porch -- watch the chipmunks and listen to the birds sing. Cook up a feast in the amazingly well-equipped kitchen. Explore the meadows and woods of the 80-acre property. Be astonished by the Milky Way shining in the dark, dark sky! And just to make it all even more perfect -- there's Wifi! We loved everything about our week at the magical Wilson House! Heartfelt thanks to our kind and gracious hostess!

A great yard for painting and playing games in. The house seems to invite storytelling and sharing.
