About Daniel Potaracke

Dick and I are laid back and retired guys who want to enjoy life after work. Being from Wisconsin, we can relate to anyone wanting to escape the Mainland and have a great vacation. We hope to be the best for you.

Daniel Potaracke purchased this house in 2012

Why Daniel Potaracke chose Laupāhoehoe

We came over to the Big Island for a vacation and left with real estate brochures. Within 6 months, we were the proud owners of this beautiful property.

Dick and I bought this place with the thought of having a piece of paradise for ourselves and to share with others. We truly want to share a great experience from your flight, to the Ohana and the Big Island itself.

What sets this property off from others is the location. It is on the Hamakua coastline northerly of Hilo about 30 miles and easy to drive to, as well as Waimea, 30 miles northerly of us where there are many things to do.

The Hamakua coast has many waterfalls and vistas that are just fantastic. Just sitting on the lanai looking out over the ocean with a cup of coffee in the morning is truly a delight making it hard to start your day of sightseeing or relaxing elsewhere. Laupahoehoe Point is a good walk, with about 2 miles r/t, where you can really just sit and watch the waves crashing over the rugged coast.

What makes this house unique

From the first time we saw the online pictures of the Ohana, we loved it. The views from the lanai and the privacy of the area are phenomenal. It is almost rural enough but, close to lots and loads to do. Whether it is just sitting out on the lanai watching nature, grilling out, just having a drink or enjoying being alone; you are in a very private setting.

Whether you want to just relax there or elsewhere close, it is all there. There are many seaside areas to enjoy and it's close to waterfalls, gardens, parks, golf, Mauna Kea, Hilo, Waimea, Kona, shopping, movies....it's all close enough to go see or do.

Guestbook comments from the manager

I believe this home is under new ownership, but with the same property manager-Jane, who is awesome! There were a couple dozen 5-star reviews which is part of why we chose this place. We were not disappointed. 1/2 hour north of Hilo and nestled into the hillside, the "mango house" offered total privacy, stunning views and easy highway access. This place is ideal for 2 couples or a small family. It's actually 2 little houses next to each other. One has only a bedroom and bath, the other also has a living room and kitchen. On our first morning we walked down to Laupahoehoe Point, which took us maybe 1/2 hour. This side of the big island is lush with tropical foliage, which we like better than the starkly contrasting desert climes of the Kona. It rains a lot on this side, but we had alt of sun too. If the rain were to persist you could always plan an activity near Waimea, or Hawi or Kona or the volcano park. Our only regret is that we only had a week here. Thanks Jane for the all the great tips and for being so available if we needed anything!

Notes:
The covered lanai is a great place to sit at the outdoor furniture while grilling or having morning coffee or that glass of wine later on. Walk around the property and enjoy the flowers and jungle-like vegetation. The property is very very quiet. When the stars come out, there are millions to see and watch for falling stars. The ocean is just a look away over the lanai or out the large windows from inside. This is place you can stay at all day/week or use as a base for sightseeing, swimming, biking, golfing or many other things to do on the Big Island.

Garden of Eden

  • 5 of 5

I've stayed at six different VRBO homes now and this was the most beautiful in terms of not just the view but the beauty of the tropical surroundings. It's peaceful and relaxing. You hear the sounds of nature, not beltway road noise. The views of ocean by day and stars by night tempt you to stay on the comfortable lanai as long as possible. Little green geckos are in abundance and provide entertainment as they chase each other. Everywhere you look there is color in the landscape. There are many different fruit trees on the property. The owner and gardener extraordinaire, Daniel, has thought of every need his guests might have. He is available for any request yet affords you perfect privacy. At an elevation of 600 feet the temperature is very nice especially when the breeze is blowing. This is the first place where I didn't experience overheated temperatures upon returning from the day's adventures. The bedroom with en suite behind the main living area made this house perfect for us because we traveled as two couples and we enjoyed our own privacy when we wanted. I can't think of a reason I would want to stay anywhere else now that I've found this beautiful and reasonably priced hideaway. Thank you, Daniel, and see you again sometime. Mike & Sherri Richmond

Owner's Response: WOW, what a great review! Thank you very much! Your having such a great time really makes it worth it and encourages me to do better or at least maintain what I do have there. It's always a work in progress to keep the grounds looking presentable and a pleasure have you and your wife and another couple enjoy it. Having two separate buildings really is a plus for privacy for two couples. Having the various fruit trees, if in season, to share with guests is fun for me. Thanks for helping cut down the ripe banana tree. I'm glad you enjoyed that experience and having something right off the tree like that is great....tastes like a banana should. I try to have what my guests want...I've been told that the kitchen area is very well stocked. I may not have the latest food processor but, there are more than enough utensils and grilling tools for the Weber. You really gave the Weber a workout! Thank you again for the wonderful review and hope to see you back at the Mango House. Mahalo Daniel

Private and Peaceful

  • 5 of 5

I was enchanted by the stars splashed against the dark night sky. The gardens abounded in beauty and the quiet stillness made our stay soothing for our spirits. Of all the places that we have rented this was hands down the most private and peaceful. Great little house with a "botanical delight for a back yard" and view of the sea that is picture perfect. On a day trip to Waimea, we had one of the best meals ever at Merriman's Restaurant. Thanks Daniel for creating magic!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for the great review. It is always nice to hear good things said about the Mango House as I and Michelle try to keep it clean and fresh for our guests. I can't take credit for the views, per se, as they are what they are with the ocean in the distance and the multitudes of stars at night but, I do try with the flora and fruit trees to share with my guests. Thank you again and hope to see you again.

A BEAUTIFUL AND RELAXING EXPERIENCE!

  • 5 of 5

The Big Island of Hawaii is unique with its natural beauty and experiences. We have visited before and were looking forward to a return to enjoy it again. We were definitely not disappointed. The Mango House, where we stayed, was nestled in its own natural garden. Many beautiful trees and plants gave a secluded, relaxed feeling to us with the added advantage of an ocean view. The accommodation was excellent with all our needs provided for. We could stay hidden in the house and garden for R&R or venture out to enjoy the lovely, natural, local attractions. Everywhere we went gave us an excellent feel for this very interesting island.

Our many thanks to the owner Daniel for providing such a well kept lodging and for making our visit so well informed with the helpful, needed instructions for our arrival and stay. Your communications to us were very much appreciated as was your friendly manner. Also, thank you VRBO for the easy and efficient method of online booking. We usually try to avoid online bookings as they can be challenging but you made it very positive. We hope we can return for another visit sometime and if the opportunity arises the Mango House would definitely be our first choice! ..... Mahalo

Owner's Response: Thank You Wendy for such a great review! One of the big selling point of the Mango House is the seclusion. Many guests tell me of how they go out for the day island tripping and then come back to a quiet evening on the lanai with a glass of wine looking out over the ocean and getting the Weber grill going. That is what I like to provide for my guests is a very relaxing place to unwind and in a beautiful surrounding. That makes me happy that I can give that to you and others. Thank you for your stay and hope to see you again.

A REAL GEM IN A TROPICAL PARADISE

  • 5 of 5

We spent the first week of our vacation in this dream house !

Our expectations were way below what our stay provided us with !

The Mango house is a little paradise and we enjoyed every minute in this lovely, secluded and welcoming tropical nest.

Many thanks to Daniel for giving us the chance to discover one of the many beauties that Hawaii has to offer.

We will definitely recommend your house to all of our friends

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for such a nice review! I'm very happy that you and your friends had a great time on the Big Island. The Hamakua Coast really is a great part of the Big Island with so much green vs the dry Kona side that gets very little rain. I'm glad to have shared the Mango House as you shared the laughter and singing I could hear coming from the Mango House. Music to my ears! Mahalo and hope to see you again!

Private Tropical Paradise

  • 5 of 5

My boyfriend and I had a wonderful time at the Mango House. The first thing you notice upon arrival is the peacefulness of the setting, amid beautifully landscaped tropical plants. There are fresh oranges and limes to pick and a beautiful ocean view from the porch (where we ate most of our meals). In the evening the coqui frogs create a wonderful symphony that sings you to sleep. It was truly a wonderful place to relax and get away from any sort of hustle and bustle, but still feel close enough to Hilo and Kona that you can make easy day trips. The towns of Honomu and Honokaa are particularly charming and close, and if you go to the later make sure to stop in at Fish and Poi for the best poke ever!!

Owner's Response: Thank you Rachel for your great review. Having peace and quiet for guests is what makes the Mango House great. Sitting on the lanai looking out over the ocean and plants is a favorite thing for my guests. Glad to hear that you had meals on the lanai as well. Honokaa is a great little town to visit with some great touristy shops for souvenirs and some great eating places as well. And, it is only 15 miles up the road. Hilo is close as well at only 30 miles away and has the daily Farmer Market and touristy things to do as well as some great eating....a very good way to spend a day! Hope to see you next year!

Amazing

  • 5 of 5

Exceeded our expectations! The view from the lanai was breathtaking and the grounds rivaled the botanical gardens. Our host made sure we had everything we needed including snorkeling gear, we came with another couple and the layout of the property was almost like having two separate rentals for the price of one.

Owner's Response: Oh Gosh! Thank you so much for such a great review! Now, I really have to keep it up! Really, the star of the Mango House is the property itself. The views from the lanai are really nice whether it's the sunrise or looking out over the ocean. I do try to maintain the grounds to enhance it all with different plants. It's always a work in progress. Yes, having two separate dwellings for one price is something that my guests really like with lots of privacy for both couples. I'm glad to provide that for my guests. Thank you very much for your kind review. Daniel

Experience Island living as you never dreamed of.

Two separate houses with two bedrooms and two baths.

One house with the kitchen, living and dining area.

We pride ourselves on keeping the house clean inside and out. This peaceful vacation rental is on the Big Island of Hawaii, just one mile up the road from one of the island's most beautiful locations, Laupahoehoe Point. A short walk or drive will reward you with vistas of green cliffs, often dotted with waterfalls that drop down into blue-green ocean. When you get to the point, you will see some of the most spectacular rugged coastline you will ever see. Take beach chairs any time of day and be hypnotized by the waves.

This is great place to stay for two couples or small families because of the privacy afforded by the two buildings connected by a short walkway.

This is a sweet house with beamed cathedral ceilings, Corian countertops and beautiful gardens. There is a great lanai to sit on for hours looking at the ocean, at the gardens, whales in the winter and the occasional double rainbows. Ohana is about 600 feet above the ocean on the slopes of Mauna Kea, the grand 13,796 foot extinct volcano that is snow capped in winter. Waipunalei, (why poona lay) is just 2 miles outside of sleepy little Lapahoehoe. Large windows continually remind you to look at the marvelous ocean. Just sitting on the lanai with a mai tai or a glass of fresh squeezed juice and you will know why Waipunalei is so heavenly. Coming back after exploring the rest of the over 4000 square mile island, you will be glad to be home. Just sit, relax and enjoy. You will feel like you are home-not just another vacation rental. The gardens of full of gorgeous flowers and birds such as the Hawaiian Pheasant.

This part of the Big Island is truly heaven. The island is so beautiful that it will be hard to stay home and enjoy just being here. Beach chairs, boogie boards, beach toys, umbrella and towels are provided. All you need to bring are you clothes.

We encourage you to rent for two weeks. There is plenty to do and see. This location is great for taking day trips to explore anywhere on the island. With two weeks, you're not as likely to feel 'driven' to be always on the go and not relax. People have thanked us later for encouraging them to go this route. The house is best for a family or two couples...or newlyweds. Minimum rental is one week.

The Ohana is not for those who want to have a Waikiki kind of vacation where you lay in the sun on a while sand beach every day surrounded by crowds of people. Honolulu (Waikiki) can be a free stop over if you want to spend a couple days there on your way to the Ohana or back. The most beautiful while sand beaches are within an hour of the Ohana and other beaches are closer. It is a great location for family or couple to explore all the treasures of the Big Island---volcanoes, rain forests, waterfalls, hiking, golf, biking and beaches.

The Ohana has it's own driveway and total privacy. Also, there is satellite TV and high speed wireless. Local calls are free. If you need long distance phone service, Verizon is a local cell carrier but, you can always use a phone card.

The Big Island has it all - gorgeous white sand beaches, and active flowing volcano, huge waterfalls, 13,800 foot extinct volcano and more. Average temperature is the low 80s. We can help you see a Hawaii many people don't see.

A cleaning service is not included and people are expected to leave the house in nice condition. This is reflected in our reasonable rates. A cleaning fee option may be available....just ask.

We delight in sharing this piece of paradise with you. Email for availability or with question you may have.
