About Daniel Potaracke

Dick and I are laid back and retired guys who want to enjoy life after work. Being from Wisconsin, we can relate to anyone wanting to escape the Mainland and have a great vacation. We hope to be the best for you.

Daniel Potaracke purchased this house in 2012

Why Daniel Potaracke chose Hamakua Coast

We came over to the Big Island for a vacation and left with real estate brochures. Within 6 months, we were the proud owners of this beautiful property.

Dick and I bought this place with the thought of having a piece of paradise for ourselves and to share with others. We truly want to share a great experience from your flight, to the Ohana and the Big Island itself.

What sets this property off from others is the location. It is on the Hamakua coastline northerly of Hilo about 30 miles and easy to drive to, as well as Waimea, 30 miles northerly of us where there are many things to do.

The Hamakua coast has many waterfalls and vistas that are just fantastic. Just sitting on the lanai looking out over the ocean with a cup of coffee in the morning is truly a delight making it hard to start your day of sightseeing or relaxing elsewhere. Laupahoehoe Point is a good walk, with about 2 miles r/t, where you can really just sit and watch the waves crashing over the rugged coast.

What makes this house unique

From the first time we saw the online pictures of the Ohana, we loved it. The views from the lanai and the privacy of the area are phenomenal. It is almost rural enough but, close to lots and loads to do. Whether it is just sitting out on the lanai watching nature, grilling out, just having a drink or enjoying being alone; you are in a very private setting.

Whether you want to just relax there or elsewhere close, it is all there. There are many seaside areas to enjoy and it's close to waterfalls, gardens, parks, golf, Mauna Kea, Hilo, Waimea, Kona, shopping,'s all close enough to go see or do.

Guestbook comments from the manager

I believe this home is under new ownership, but with the same property manager-Jane, who is awesome! There were a couple dozen 5-star reviews which is part of why we chose this place. We were not disappointed. 1/2 hour north of Hilo and nestled into the hillside, the "mango house" offered total privacy, stunning views and easy highway access. This place is ideal for 2 couples or a small family. It's actually 2 little houses next to each other. One has only a bedroom and bath, the other also has a living room and kitchen. On our first morning we walked down to Laupahoehoe Point, which took us maybe 1/2 hour. This side of the big island is lush with tropical foliage, which we like better than the starkly contrasting desert climes of the Kona. It rains a lot on this side, but we had alt of sun too. If the rain were to persist you could always plan an activity near Waimea, or Hawi or Kona or the volcano park. Our only regret is that we only had a week here. Thanks Jane for the all the great tips and for being so available if we needed anything!

The covered lanai is a great place to sit at the outdoor furniture while grilling or having morning coffee or that glass of wine later on. Walk around the property and enjoy the flowers and jungle-like vegetation. The property is very very quiet. When the stars come out, there are millions to see and watch for falling stars. The ocean is just a look away over the lanai or out the large windows from inside. This is place you can stay at all day/week or use as a base for sightseeing, swimming, biking, golfing or many other things to do on the Big Island.

Exceeded our expectations! The view from the lanai was breathtaking and the grounds rivaled the botanical gardens. Our host made sure we had everything we needed including snorkeling gear, we came with another couple and the layout of the property was almost like having two separate rentals for the price of one.

Owner's Response: Oh Gosh! Thank you so much for such a great review! Now, I really have to keep it up! Really, the star of the Mango House is the property itself. The views from the lanai are really nice whether it's the sunrise or looking out over the ocean. I do try to maintain the grounds to enhance it all with different plants. It's always a work in progress. Yes, having two separate dwellings for one price is something that my guests really like with lots of privacy for both couples. I'm glad to provide that for my guests. Thank you very much for your kind review. Daniel

Private Tropical Paradise

  • 5 of 5

My boyfriend and I had a wonderful time at the Mango House. The first thing you notice upon arrival is the peacefulness of the setting, amid beautifully landscaped tropical plants. There are fresh oranges and limes to pick and a beautiful ocean view from the porch (where we ate most of our meals). In the evening the coqui frogs create a wonderful symphony that sings you to sleep. It was truly a wonderful place to relax and get away from any sort of hustle and bustle, but still feel close enough to Hilo and Kona that you can make easy day trips. The towns of Honomu and Honokaa are particularly charming and close, and if you go to the later make sure to stop in at Fish and Poi for the best poke ever!!

Owner's Response: Thank you Rachel for your great review. Having peace and quiet for guests is what makes the Mango House great. Sitting on the lanai looking out over the ocean and plants is a favorite thing for my guests. Glad to hear that you had meals on the lanai as well. Honokaa is a great little town to visit with some great touristy shops for souvenirs and some great eating places as well. And, it is only 15 miles up the road. Hilo is close as well at only 30 miles away and has the daily Farmer Market and touristy things to do as well as some great eating....a very good way to spend a day! Hope to see you next year!

Wonderful host, serene and peaceful stay

  • 5 of 5

Daniel is dedicated to the happiness of his guests, from first contact to periodic checkins in person, carrying fresh fruit.

Recommended for those seeking to get away from the noise and stress of the resorts, and to seeing the real Hawaii on the east side of the Big Island

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind review! I do try to check in on my guests while respecting their privacy. I'm glad you enjoyed the seclusion and privacy of the Mango House. That is probably the best thing about the Mango House for most guests. I enjoy giving my guests whatever fruit is available whether it be the bananas, oranges, limes and lemons. The juicing oranges are amazing right now and I'm glad I was able to share them with you!

Allways great

This is our second year at the Mango House and we enjoyed it just as much as last year(although the weather was better last year!)

Daniel provided us with oranges, lemons, limes and bananas which were wonderful. A very quiet and peaceful location.

Would - will - return soon.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your great review. I always appreciate getting reviews as it lets me know how things are from a guest's perspective. I enjoy sharing the fruit that are planted around the property whether it be limes, oranges, starfruit, lemons and bananas provided they are in season. The oranges are really great right now and the trees are also blossoming for the next crop.

Lovely and comfortable

  • 5 of 5

This home is gorgeous, comfortable, very clean. The grounds are absolutely beautiful with abundant fruit, flowers and foliage; it gives the nearby Botanical Garden a run for their money. Completely private, frog music all night. The geckos do a great job of keeping the house bug-free. Daniel is great to work with. We would definitely return--mahalo, Daniel, for your attention to detail and easy manner.

Owner's Response: Thank you very much Lynne and Steve for your kind words. Although, I don't think I'll ever get to the caliber of the Hawaiian Botanical Garden, I do try to keep the grounds as nice as possible with various flowers and plantings as well as fruits like oranges, limes and lemons which I try to share with my guests when in season. This past year, I've planted starfruit and already had a crop of them that previous guests have enjoyed. Thank you again and hope to see you again.....good guests are always welcome and appreciated.

Experience Island living as you never dreamed of.

Two separate houses with two bedrooms and two baths.

One house with the kitchen, living and dining area.

We pride ourselves on keeping the house clean inside and out. This peaceful vacation rental is on the Big Island of Hawaii, just one mile up the road from one of the island's most beautiful locations, Laupahoehoe Point. A short walk or drive will reward you with vistas of green cliffs, often dotted with waterfalls that drop down into blue-green ocean. When you get to the point, you will see some of the most spectacular rugged coastline you will ever see. Take beach chairs any time of day and be hypnotized by the waves.

This is great place to stay for two couples or small families because of the privacy afforded by the two buildings connected by a short walkway.

This is a sweet house with beamed cathedral ceilings, Corian countertops and beautiful gardens. There is a great lanai to sit on for hours looking at the ocean, at the gardens, whales in the winter and the occasional double rainbows. Ohana is about 600 feet above the ocean on the slopes of Mauna Kea, the grand 13,796 foot extinct volcano that is snow capped in winter. Waipunalei, (why poona lay) is just 2 miles outside of sleepy little Lapahoehoe. Large windows continually remind you to look at the marvelous ocean. Just sitting on the lanai with a mai tai or a glass of fresh squeezed juice and you will know why Waipunalei is so heavenly. Coming back after exploring the rest of the over 4000 square mile island, you will be glad to be home. Just sit, relax and enjoy. You will feel like you are home-not just another vacation rental. The gardens of full of gorgeous flowers and birds such as the Hawaiian Pheasant.

This part of the Big Island is truly heaven. The island is so beautiful that it will be hard to stay home and enjoy just being here. Beach chairs, boogie boards, beach toys, umbrella and towels are provided. All you need to bring are you clothes.

We encourage you to rent for two weeks. There is plenty to do and see. This location is great for taking day trips to explore anywhere on the island. With two weeks, you're not as likely to feel 'driven' to be always on the go and not relax. People have thanked us later for encouraging them to go this route. The house is best for a family or two couples...or newlyweds. Minimum rental is one week.

The Ohana is not for those who want to have a Waikiki kind of vacation where you lay in the sun on a while sand beach every day surrounded by crowds of people. Honolulu (Waikiki) can be a free stop over if you want to spend a couple days there on your way to the Ohana or back. The most beautiful while sand beaches are within an hour of the Ohana and other beaches are closer. It is a great location for family or couple to explore all the treasures of the Big Island---volcanoes, rain forests, waterfalls, hiking, golf, biking and beaches.

The Ohana has it's own driveway and total privacy. Also, there is satellite TV and high speed wireless. Local calls are free. If you need long distance phone service, Verizon is a local cell carrier but, you can always use a phone card.

The Big Island has it all - gorgeous white sand beaches, and active flowing volcano, huge waterfalls, 13,800 foot extinct volcano and more. Average temperature is the low 80s. We can help you see a Hawaii many people don't see.

A cleaning service is not included and people are expected to leave the house in nice condition. This is reflected in our reasonable rates. A cleaning fee option may be available....just ask.

We delight in sharing this piece of paradise with you. Email for availability or with question you may have.
