About Daniel Potaracke

Dick and I are laid back and retired guys who want to enjoy life after work. Being from Wisconsin, we can relate to anyone wanting to escape the Mainland and have a great vacation. We hope to be the best for you.

Daniel Potaracke purchased this house in 2012

Why Daniel Potaracke chose Laupāhoehoe

We came over to the Big Island for a vacation and left with real estate brochures. Within 6 months, we were the proud owners of this beautiful property.

Dick and I bought this place with the thought of having a piece of paradise for ourselves and to share with others. We truly want to share a great experience from your flight, to the Ohana and the Big Island itself.

What sets this property off from others is the location. It is on the Hamakua coastline northerly of Hilo about 30 miles and easy to drive to, as well as Waimea, 30 miles northerly of us where there are many things to do.

The Hamakua coast has many waterfalls and vistas that are just fantastic. Just sitting on the lanai looking out over the ocean with a cup of coffee in the morning is truly a delight making it hard to start your day of sightseeing or relaxing elsewhere. Laupahoehoe Point is a good walk, with about 2 miles r/t, where you can really just sit and watch the waves crashing over the rugged coast.

What makes this house unique

From the first time we saw the online pictures of the Ohana, we loved it. The views from the lanai and the privacy of the area are phenomenal. It is almost rural enough but, close to lots and loads to do. Whether it is just sitting out on the lanai watching nature, grilling out, just having a drink or enjoying being alone; you are in a very private setting.

Whether you want to just relax there or elsewhere close, it is all there. There are many seaside areas to enjoy and it's close to waterfalls, gardens, parks, golf, Mauna Kea, Hilo, Waimea, Kona, shopping,'s all close enough to go see or do.

Guestbook comments from the manager

I believe this home is under new ownership, but with the same property manager-Jane, who is awesome! There were a couple dozen 5-star reviews which is part of why we chose this place. We were not disappointed. 1/2 hour north of Hilo and nestled into the hillside, the "mango house" offered total privacy, stunning views and easy highway access. This place is ideal for 2 couples or a small family. It's actually 2 little houses next to each other. One has only a bedroom and bath, the other also has a living room and kitchen. On our first morning we walked down to Laupahoehoe Point, which took us maybe 1/2 hour. This side of the big island is lush with tropical foliage, which we like better than the starkly contrasting desert climes of the Kona. It rains a lot on this side, but we had alt of sun too. If the rain were to persist you could always plan an activity near Waimea, or Hawi or Kona or the volcano park. Our only regret is that we only had a week here. Thanks Jane for the all the great tips and for being so available if we needed anything!

The covered lanai is a great place to sit at the outdoor furniture while grilling or having morning coffee or that glass of wine later on. Walk around the property and enjoy the flowers and jungle-like vegetation. The property is very very quiet. When the stars come out, there are millions to see and watch for falling stars. The ocean is just a look away over the lanai or out the large windows from inside. This is place you can stay at all day/week or use as a base for sightseeing, swimming, biking, golfing or many other things to do on the Big Island.

Laupahoehoe Reunion

  • 5 of 5

The location of the property was centrally accessible to our family reunion activities. The home was well proved for including down to soap pods for the laundry and a dryer. We truly enjoyed ourselves and look forward to our next visit to Waipunalei.

Thank you,

Lambert K.

"Amazing private home, a hidden gem".

  • 5 of 5

Situated 40 minutes north of Hilo on the gentle slope of Mauna Kea volcano, this truly hidden oasis, sits nestled among its beautiful manicured tropical gardens so lovingly cared for by its owner, Daniel. Our 2 week stay seemed not long enough, as we spent many hours sitting back gazing from the verandah chairs across the garden to the ocean views beyond. Without a doubt, The Mango House would have to be the best accommodation on the island for value, privacy, and to just chill out. The house has very comfortable accommodation and all up to date amenities you would expect.

Former renters have generously left many cooking condiments and books for others to enjoy during their stay. The books definitely came to good use during the passing of Hurricane Lane recently as we were confined indoors for a couple of days.

The Mango House is a few minutes drive to Laupahoehoe Point, a great picnic spot or to try your hand at fishing. Two convenience stores are also 5-7 mins drive away.

Now, back at home reflecting on our stay, The Mango House was very special, a beautifully maintained and private home that we thoroughly recommend for a relaxing stay. Thank you Daniel for allowing us to enjoy The Mango House.

Owner's Response: Wow, thank you for such a nice review! It truly was a pleasure to host you and your girlfriend. I'm happy that you enjoyed the Mango House and it's secluded location. Having the Mango House as a base to explore the island is what makes it so great...whether going to see the botanical garden or waterfalls or just going down to Laupahoehoe Point with wine and watch the waves coming in. It is very relaxing! I enjoyed talking with you, Gordon, and hope to see you again in the future. Happily, your girlfriend accepted your proposal while at the Mango House! Send an invite!

Amazing! Highly recommended!

  • 5 of 5

Wow, this was one of our best VRBO experience so far. First and foremost, our host Daniel was SUPER helpful! He provided wonderful information, was very fast with communications and was super flexible with arrival and departure times. Then there is the house! We loved it! It was remote yes, but we found it absolutely enchanting. And to tel you the truth, its remoteness is part of what we loved about it. The garden is lovely, and staying there is very restful and good for the soul! But at the same time, you are not that far from things to do. There are grocery shops nearby, there is a park just in front, and easy access to both Hilo and the Kohala coast for sightseeing and beach going. We loved having the separate room (our teenage daughter adored having her own space away from parents). The kitchen was very well equipped. Everything was super clean. And we loved our geckos and the orange cat visitor that would come say hi on the lanai. We will definitively book this house again on our next trip to the big island. Mahalo!

Owner's Response: WOW...what a great review you've written. This sure made my day when I read it. I am very happy that you enjoyed the garden around the Mango House as it takes quite a little work for sure. I'm sure your daughter will remember coming to Hawaii to help celebrate her graduation. I like having two separate cabins for my guests to enjoy the privacy it offers especially when there are two couples. Thank you very much for your review and I would love to have you back at the Mango House.

Picturesque, pastoral, perfect

  • 5 of 5

This property was tucked away in a quiet respite of the island, perfect for early morning coffee on the porch overlooking the Pacific. Ideal for unplugging and recharging. The kitchen was well stocked. And our family with teenagers appreciated the unique two building design that granted us some extra living space.

Lovely and quiet home

  • 5 of 5

This was a wonderful place to stay outside of Hilo and Honokaa. It was pretty, quiet, and clean. The home has everything you need to feel comfortable and Daniel is incredibly helpful. We are very thankful he worked with us on such short notice when we booked due to our other place in Volcano cancelling because of the eruption. Thanks for sharing your place with us!

Owner's Response: Mahalo Natasha I was glad to help you with your problem with finding a place to stay on such short notice. Thankfully, everything worked out OK for you and that staying at a different location worked out in your favor. I'm glad that your vacation wasn't ruined because of the volcano shutting down your first choice....hopefully, you'll make the Mango House your first choice next There is so much more to do up on the Hamakua coast. I'm glad to help out!

A lovely place. Private and peaceful with amazing views.

  • 5 of 5

My daughter and I stayed here last week for our annual Father-Daughter trip to the Islands. We decided to go back to the Big Island this year and found this place. It is the ideal place to enjoy the natural beauty of the Island. A bit hidden away but if you are looking for a place to relax and refresh yourself in a private setting amid lush greenery with an absolutely stunning view of the ocean from the lanai this is the place for you.

The place itself consists of two separate buildings, the main building has a very well equipped kitchen, living area, bedroom, and full bath. The second has a large bedroom and bath. Both buildings are very tastefully appointed with everything you could need to make your stay comfortable.

Daniel, the property owner, lives close so he can respond to any issues quickly. He was very responsive to all our questions before we arrived and provides excellent directions to find the place (it can be a little tricky the first time). However, since the place was completely set up for our arrival, and everything worked as advertised there really was no reason to have to contact him.

In short, this was the ideal place for us. Waking up to the amazing view while drinking our morning coffee and deciding what to do that day or returning after a day exploring the Island or after returning after a day of being out and about this place provides a serene space to fully absorb the beauty that is the Big Island.

Thank you Daniel for providing such a wonderful place. If we return to the Big Island, Mango House will be at the top of our list to stay again.

Owner's Response: Thank you VERY MUCH for the great review. I do appreciate it so much. I happy that my vacation rental worked out so well for you and your daughter. As you mentioned, there are two separate buildings apart from each other where you both have the privacy you want. Many guests enjoy having the separate place to relax without being "close" all the time. This works especially for two couples...or, if one is a snorer, I know one spouse will sleep in the back bedroom. Whomever stays in the front has to make coffee in the I do try to put myself in the guest's place and foresee their needs and one of them is the supplies in the kitchen which shouldn't be hard to do but, it can be with so many different tastes. salad spinner though. Glad I got to you meet you and your daughter and hope to meet you again at the Mango House!

Experience Island living as you never dreamed of.

Two separate houses with two bedrooms and two baths.

One house with the kitchen, living and dining area.

We pride ourselves on keeping the house clean inside and out. This peaceful vacation rental is on the Big Island of Hawaii, just one mile up the road from one of the island's most beautiful locations, Laupahoehoe Point. A short walk or drive will reward you with vistas of green cliffs, often dotted with waterfalls that drop down into blue-green ocean. When you get to the point, you will see some of the most spectacular rugged coastline you will ever see. Take beach chairs any time of day and be hypnotized by the waves.

This is great place to stay for two couples or small families because of the privacy afforded by the two buildings connected by a short walkway.

This is a sweet house with beamed cathedral ceilings, Corian countertops and beautiful gardens. There is a great lanai to sit on for hours looking at the ocean, at the gardens, whales in the winter and the occasional double rainbows. Ohana is about 600 feet above the ocean on the slopes of Mauna Kea, the grand 13,796 foot extinct volcano that is snow capped in winter. Waipunalei, (why poona lay) is just 2 miles outside of sleepy little Lapahoehoe. Large windows continually remind you to look at the marvelous ocean. Just sitting on the lanai with a mai tai or a glass of fresh squeezed juice and you will know why Waipunalei is so heavenly. Coming back after exploring the rest of the over 4000 square mile island, you will be glad to be home. Just sit, relax and enjoy. You will feel like you are home-not just another vacation rental. The gardens of full of gorgeous flowers and birds such as the Hawaiian Pheasant.

This part of the Big Island is truly heaven. The island is so beautiful that it will be hard to stay home and enjoy just being here. Beach chairs, boogie boards, beach toys, umbrella and towels are provided. All you need to bring are you clothes.

We encourage you to rent for two weeks. There is plenty to do and see. This location is great for taking day trips to explore anywhere on the island. With two weeks, you're not as likely to feel 'driven' to be always on the go and not relax. People have thanked us later for encouraging them to go this route. The house is best for a family or two couples...or newlyweds. Minimum rental is one week.

The Ohana is not for those who want to have a Waikiki kind of vacation where you lay in the sun on a while sand beach every day surrounded by crowds of people. Honolulu (Waikiki) can be a free stop over if you want to spend a couple days there on your way to the Ohana or back. The most beautiful while sand beaches are within an hour of the Ohana and other beaches are closer. It is a great location for family or couple to explore all the treasures of the Big Island---volcanoes, rain forests, waterfalls, hiking, golf, biking and beaches.

The Ohana has it's own driveway and total privacy. Also, there is satellite TV and high speed wireless. Local calls are free. If you need long distance phone service, Verizon is a local cell carrier but, you can always use a phone card.

The Big Island has it all - gorgeous white sand beaches, and active flowing volcano, huge waterfalls, 13,800 foot extinct volcano and more. Average temperature is the low 80s. We can help you see a Hawaii many people don't see.

A cleaning service is not included and people are expected to leave the house in nice condition. This is reflected in our reasonable rates. A cleaning fee option may be available....just ask.

We delight in sharing this piece of paradise with you. Email for availability or with question you may have.
