5 Bedrooms, 3.5 Baths (Sleeps 12) Spectacular Hacienda with mountain views
About C.J. Johns
Greetings! I'm CJ Johns, a rancher, running cattle in some of the toughest country in the USA, and I wouldn't have it any other way. If you are here visiting I'd love to have you experience this wondrous country of mine. Some of my personal western collection is displayed in this home for your enjoyment. Mile High Hacienda was designed to give you the unique flavor and experience of this part of the Southwest. I hope you'll love it as much as we do.
C.J. Johns purchased this Lodge in 1992
Why C.J. Johns chose El Paso
This was originally a large ranch adobe home that sat next to a 10,000 acre operation that I had previously bought. Rather than see it be bought and built into something uncharacteristic of the area, I purchased it. After completely rebuilding, restoring and remodeling Mile High Hacienda, it is now available for you to enjoy. With the ambience and solitude of the high mountain desert and the convenience of a city, Mile High Hacienda is truly a one of a kind find.
What makes this Lodge unique
Views, views, views. 360 degrees of views from the top of the high mountain where Mile High is located. The stunning sunsets from the deck or the colorful Margarita bar, are argumentatively the best in the Southwest. When the mule deer come in to water in the late afternoon it is a truly breathtaking event. If you like hiking the Hueco Tanks State Park is only 6 miles away. ATV rentals are located nearby. The Guadalupe Nat'l Park and Carlsbad Caverns are down the road. Spanish missions are in the Rio Grande Valley.

Mile High is a true gem. The natural beauty is amazing. The house is filled with treasures.
From the moment we say Mile High as we drive up Rt 62 we fell in love. The landscape is like nothing I have ever experienced.
The sunrises and sunsets we looked forward to daily, each one was totally different.
The house is set up for the comfort of each guest. The art work and other collectibles were get additions to the hominess of the hacienda.
Donna made sure we were welcomed from the minute we stepped in the house. She left several treats for our enjoyment.
I have stayed in a few other vacation rentals and this is by far our favorite.
I plan to make the Mile High Hacienda a home I visit again and again in the future.
If you have never stayed here you owe it to yourself to make a reservation and experience a wonderful property owned by very nice people.
We love Mile High.
What can we say!!!! You pretty much say it all! We sure love the energy we put in to taking care of the ranch. Next time I really want you to use the whole 10,000 acres. The wildlife and cattle are a trip in its self. Once again thank you ! The bunch out west!
Great for Family Gatherings
My family decided to visit my brother in El Paso and spend Thanksgiving at Mile High this year.
We had a great time overall and would highly recommend for a larger group!
The instructions provided were comprehensive and we had no issues finding the place by relying on google maps. For us, it was the perfect balance of being close to the city/airport but also feeling like an escape.
Before getting into all the great things about this place, the only thing that would have been nice would be a way to check remaining water levels (since water has to be delivered to the house). We had a few family members whose concerns probably could have been alleviated by this, but at the end of the day we had no issues with water, though we did try to conserve at the owners’ recommendation. One other minor thing was that many of the shower doors didn’t seem to close very well. Given we were limiting shower time, this didn’t really cause any issues, but was a bit of a small nuisance.
With that out of the way... The space itself was wonderful for our group of 11 adults and 1 child, with room (technically beds) to spare! We particularly appreciated the huge dining room table which comfortably fit the entire party, along with our many dishes! The abundance of places to just hang out was also a plus.
With it being Thanksgiving, one risk we took was relying on a kitchen we’d never used before. Turned out that the kitchen worked wonderfully and was stocked with plenty of cooking supplies. The stove is a 2 burner+griddle setup, which is different but worked quite well for our needs! There was also a slow cooker and large electric roasting pan.
For convenience, we relied largely on disposable plates and utensils, but there appeared to be plenty for those who don’t mind doing dishes on vacation ;) It’s worth noting that there is no dishwasher.
With unseasonably low temperatures and high winds, we were only able to take advantage of the wonderful outdoor spaces during the day, but several family members quickly found the deck to be an ideal yoga spot. The deck was great to just relax and enjoy sone great views. With a small child, I had some concerns that the gap in the railing would be dangerous, but chicken wire surrounding it helped alleviate these concerns.
Communication with the owner was a breeze via text message and even on Thanksgiving they were responsive!
If you’re visiting El Paso with a large group, look no further than Mile High!
I will have the TEAM look at fixing the shower doors, can`t promise but we will try! Glad you guy`s had a great time, that is what we built the MILE HIGH for. And I understand you left the place very nice. Next time I really what you to enjoy the 10,000 ACRES that surround the whole operation. It can be mind changing. Thank you for the nice review and we will look forward to your next visit.
We had such a wonderful time! The house was amazing and the location was even better than we had imagined. The views and seclusion were exactly what we were looking for. We came to TX to visit my son on leave from Fort Bliss. It was a great family trip and he has already decided he would like to stay at the house again when he returns from his deployment. The house had enough space for everyone to spread out, but our most fun times were had laughing around the kitchen counter. We saw deer, a hummingbird and an owl, and we heard him hooting at night! We took a day trip to Carlsbad Caverns. They were amazing and almost a straight shot from the house. The bed in the master bedroom was more comfortable than my bed at home! The space, seclusion and views were exactly what we were hoping for.
The team and I are very happy you enjoyed your stay at our estate. Next time visit the wonderful Huoco Tanks, they are incredible.
The house is in a location that is away from everything, the view is amazing. The house is big and very comfortable.
Amazing house and location.
We had a fantastic time. There was more than enough room for all of us. The decor fit the house perfectly and every corner had something interesting to admire. The million dollar views is what really sells the house. The view from the margarita bar was my favorite. Donna was a great host and accommodated us in every way. She was quick to respond to questions and was super flexible on times to check in and out. One of my absolute favorite places to stay. Definitely book this place. You won’t be sorry.
THANK YOU very much for your review. It makes the team happy that you enjoyed yourself. Come again. cj
Beautiful and Unique
Out extended family of 11 stayed here for four nights and we had more than enough room. Despite an unusually cold and windy week, we had an amazing time. We weren't able to take advantage of the views very much because of the wind, but we were able to have some amazing family quality time. The dining table is huge - perfect for a large group. There are also plenty of cozy seating areas. The location is amazing. We were just down the road from Hueco Tanks, which is one of the best state parks in Texas. About an hour in the other direction is Guadelupe Mountains National Park and just beyond is Carlsbad Caverns. We were able to visit all three and even climbed the highest peak in Texas.
The team says THANK YOU. It is so nice when folks take the time to write. thank you and we hope to see you again.
Atop the Hueco Mountains at almost 5,700 feet, Mile High Hacienda, is the highest house in Texas. With a 360 degree view encompassing two countries and three states, you'll experience legendary southwest sunsets, and a breathtaking nighttime view of the lights of the El Paso-Juarez metroplex and evening skies and stars.
Mile High Hacienda is only a 25-minute drive from El Paso International Airport. The Hacienda itself is a sprawling 6,500 square foot rustic ranch style adobe located within a 10,000 acre ranch (17 square miles). This makes Mile High a very private home that is also easily accessible to the city of El Paso. El Paso is the 17th largest city in the USA and the safest city over a half million.
It's five bedrooms range from king size to twin and an additional Stone Cottage for two is available. A spacious dining room served by a commercial kitchen creates a pleasant and comfortable environment for business meetings or dining. For socializing and entertaining we have a large bar room, a margarita patio bar, adobe walled courtyard with exterior fireplace as well as a deck built out over the cliff with an incredible view of the mountains and valley below.
