About the property

Cozy cottages situated on the remains of the castle walls

Enjoy the beauty and peace of the ancient hamlet of Porciano with its stone paved walkways and breathtaking views. Situated in the shadow of the castle of Porciano and lovingly restored and decorated by the castle owner, the cottages are the perfect place from which to explore the natural and artistic treasures of Tuscany and the Casentino Valley.

The stone cottages have been renovated respecting their original look and decorated with family furniture which gives a feeling of coziness and warmth. Available for guests, free wifi in all the indoor and outdoor areas and private parking within the estate or in a nearby area.

Three cottages available:

Casa Scaletta

This pretty and bright cottage opens onto the grounds of the Castle.

A rustic short antique stone staircase leads up to the living/dining room area with comfortable seating and a wood table for 6 people.

The equipped kitchen is next to it (gas burners, electric oven, microwave oven, refrigerator and washing machine etc.). On the same floor, there is a bathroom with shower.

A few steps down take you to the bedrooms and the second full bathroom, with a skylight and a very ancient marble washbasin.

The two bedrooms, one double and one triple, are large and comfortable. From the master bedroom you can access a tiny, charming reading spot, with window overlooking the countryside

Beautiful views from the windows of the tiled roofs of Porciano and the Casentino valley.

Outdoors a table for six, chairs and deck chairs are set up for your enjoyment directly opposite the castle and its garden.

Casa Martina

Small and comfortable apartment at ground level, cool in the summer and very pleasant.

It is located in the higher part of the village near the Castle. The entrance is in common with Casa Teresa which is one floor up. Casa Martina and Casa Teresa may be rented together as an excellent solution for two couples who wish to have their privacy.

The apartment is composed of a large living/dining area with wooden table for 4 people, corner fireplace and comfortable seating. The fitted country-style kitchen is equipped with gas burners, electric oven, fridge, microwave oven . Washing machine available in the apartment.

The large bedroom sleeps two with possibility of a third bed; view from the window on one of the quaint Porciano stone-paved walkways.

The small bathroom with large comfortable shower offers a view on the valley from its tiny window.

In front of the house is a small terrace with table and chairs along one of the footpaths of the village.

As the apartment is on the ground level, for safety the windows have wrought-iron grating.

Casa Teresa

Walk up the old stone staircase from the main entrance in common with Casa Martina. This small and romantic apartment is composed of living room with corner fireplace, couch and comfortable seats plus a table for 4 people. The couch is a small single bed. The adjoining kitchenette has gas burners, electric oven, fridge and microwave etc. A washing machine is available for guests in another building of the estate.

The bedroom which sleeps two has an en suite bathroom with shower. Lovely sweeping views of the countryside over the tiled roofs of the village.

Tiny private garden on the side of the house with table, chairs and deck chairs, right below the remains of the ancient castle walls.

About Martha Specht Corsi

My name is Martha Specht Corsi and I am the daughter of George and Flaminia Specht, who restored and brought back to life the Castle of Porciano. Throughout the years we organized many cultural events in Porciano to attract quality tourism to the Casentino Valley.

I have hosted lectures, seminars, concerts, Dante readings, as well as theater productions. These events are held in Dante’s Hall or on the lovely grounds in front of the Castle.

I am fascinated with the history of everyday life of the past centuries and the survival of forgotten arts and crafts.

I have particular interest in hosting groups of artists, writers, journalists or history and art buffs in Porciano. It is possible to organize lectures by university professors and experts in various fields.

For many years I have given lectures at Studio Art Centers International in Florence on Tuscan traditions related to food and the history of cooking. I have written The SACI Cookbook. Every year I invite to Porciano groups of American students from Harding University in Florence. On these special occasions they experience the “real” untouristy Tuscany of small towns and castles, ancient monasteries and country churches and enjoy the flavour of old local recipes.

The magic of this place and its beauty in all seasons have inspired me to share it with others interested in charming places off the beaten track.

Come and enjoy the Real, Traditional Tuscan Hospitality!

Martha Specht Corsi purchased this cottage in 1800

Why Martha Specht Corsi chose Stia

The Borgo del Castello di Porciano offers the peace and hospitality of the upper valley of the Arno River, Casentino. An excellent location for day trips to Florence, Arezzo, La Verna and beyond or spending time in a relaxing setting .

The village stands at 600 meters above sea level, and is only one mile away (1.5 km) from the local town of Stia. Stia is a lovely small town built where the Arno and Staggia rivers meet.

The Romanesque church in the square surrounded by archways is one of the most beautiful pievi (parish churches) of the Casentino. In the summer you will be able to enjoy the park along the river where you can sun yourself, wade or swim in the clear waters of the Arno river.

The sources of the Arno are very near Stia so the water is still clean and pure. In the mountains around Stia and Porciano the National Park Reserve known as the Parco Nazionale delle Foreste Casentinesi offers a number of hiking trails and walks.

What makes this cottage unique

Beautiful vistas, quiet, comfortable and private.

We speak English and Italian and can provide our customers with all the assistence and advices they might need in order to make their stay as smooth and enjoyable as possible.

We are able to offer our guests several kinds of courses and activities to complete a unique and unforgettable travel experience: Italian language courses, cooking classes, guided tours, guided excursions in the Casentino Forests National Park, horseback riding nearby, wine and food tastings, ayurveda massages, art history and history lectures and much more. All our courses, activities and lectures are held by qualified instructors and lecturers.

A lovely golf course is only 20 minutes away, very near the hilltown of Poppi.

Castello di Porciano was the highlight of my trip -- an enchanting location in eastern Tuscany. Martha and Federica were perfect hosts, La Scaletta was charming and immaculately clean, and its location off the beaten path meant virtually no tourists. In all, it was a beautiful Italian experience.

Ottima vacanza a Porciano!

  • 5 of 5

Breathaking Porciano

  • 5 of 5

Our family of two adults and two children (9 and 14) stayed at La Scalletta for just under two weeks in July. We enjoyed the area with places to hike (Monte Falterona and around), mountain-side monasteries (La Verna) and the easy-paced towns of the Casentino Valley. The apartment itself had a well-equipped kitchen that we used primarily for breakfasts and lunches (and the occasional dinner). The two bedrooms were comfortable and clean. There was a nice grassy area outside the apartment that allowed us to dine in the fresh air several times (with a view of the lit castle on clear nights). Fede was easy to contact and responded quickly to questions about the area and practicalities. A wonderful, tranquil and refreshing area to vist and a lovely apartment to stay in! We will be back =)

Magical and special Porciano

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in the Martina apartment, and it was absolutely lovely. Well appointed, clean, with comfortable beds and linens. We had a little patio to enjoy dining al fresco. The tiny hamlet is charming and comfortable and we will be back again and again. Fede was welcoming and warm and helped with any questions we had. We did not want for anything! As someone who travels frequently and worldwide, I highly recommend Porciano and any one of the apartments, as we toured all of them and our friends stayed in Scaletta and Teresa. Go now!

Our Stay at the Castle in Porciano in September 2016

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our week-long stay in Casa Scaletta at the Castle Porciano in Stia Tuscany. Having visited Florence previously, having a base in Stia allowed us to explore other smaller towns and sights in Tuscany, such as San Sepulcro, Arezzo, Poppi, Anghiari, and La Verna to name just a few, while still being within an hour of Florence. Fede and Martha (the owner of the castle) made us feel welcome with a guided tour of the castle itself and explanation of some of its history. Casa Scaletta is one of the cottages and easily can accommodate four although there were only two of us on this trip. Staying for a week allowed us to become more familiar with this part of Tuscany and not be treated as tourists in the big city (not having to pack and unpack another benefit)...we particularly enjoyed visiting new restaurants in the area and getting to know the locals and even visiting the grocery store (how to find those codes needed at the checkout when selecting fruit and vegetables, we don't have that in the US). Very picturesque castle and small town with all the amenities we could want. We spent our anniversary celebrating in a local restaurant in Stia and glad we did. Highly recommend a stay here.

Endroit exceptionnel

  • 5 of 5

The Casentino is the first valley formed by the Arno river; a land of natural beauty, ancient country churches, castles and sanctuaries. Surrounded by the peace of the Casentino Forest National Park, you will explore a hidden and still undiscovered corner of the Tuscan countryside, away from the standard and usual tourist routes and destinations.

Many small hill towns, known for their beauty and history, are very close to each other like Poppi, Bibbiena, Anghiari and many others.

Florence and Arezzo are only just over one hour away. Siena and Cortona are lovely day trips from Porciano.

The Casentino is an area which maintains the appeal of a lesser-known Tuscany where the sense of tradition is still strong. The wish of its inhabitants of not loosing their bond with past history is felt everywhere.
