Why Therese Byrne chose Back Bay

The character, Victorian brownstone architecture and history of Back Bay drew me to this neighborhood (similar to where I had lived in Manhattan), this distinguished brownstone and elegant, spacious duplex condo.

What makes this condo unique

Back Bay -- considered one of the best-preserved examples of 19th-century urban design in the United States — is in the heart of Boston. Commonwealth Avenue, Boston’s grand parkway, just blocks to the beautiful Charles River Esplanade and activities (boating, concerts, running, biking), Public Gardens (first botanical garden and swan boats), chic shopping and cafes along newbury as well as historical sites and architecture. Take a sail or an amfibious Duckboat ride around historic Boston, North End, Charlestown. Walk the Freedom Trail. Walk or take the T to take in a Red Sox game at Fenway Park, or go to the Waterfront to tour and dine waterside. Enjoy the best Boston has to offer like the locals, without a car.

Lovely brownstone in a great location !

  • 5 of 5

The property was exactly as we had expected it to be. Thérèse had stayed up to meet and show us around, despite our arriving into Boston rather late into the night. The brownstone was well kept, with a large foyer that leads into a spacious drawing room with large windows. The kitchen was well stocked with a coffee machine, oven, dishwasher. The washer and dryer (common) were an added bonus. Proximity to Newbury Street, with its shops and restaurants was great. Would love to stay again some day !

Not What We Expected

  • 1 of 5

My wife and I were scheduled to stay at this property beginning September 21st through October 1, 2017. We left (4) days early due to the following reasons: 1) Stifling heat in the unit due to very minimal A/C and no window coverings on Western windows. These windows that looked onto the alley are the only windows in the unit. This also provided no privacy from the apartments directly across the alley. 2) The only bed was only a Double, not a Queen. 3) No room in any of the closets for our belongings. 4) The kitchen was sparsely equipped and the oven had been left with a cookie sheet with burnt aluminum foil prior to our stay. 5) The commodes were loose at their base or seat. 6) The bathroom sink needed to be repaired or replaced. 7) The shower tiled walls appeared to have considerable mildew. 8) The very extensive personal items and family photos throughout were a constant reminder that this was the owner's home full time and not primarily a VRBO.

By contrast, we had friends from Seattle staying in a comparatively priced VRBO near us that had none of the above problems.

The only thing that we found to be favorable is the location of the building in Boston's Back Bay.

The owner was made aware of some of our reasons for leaving early but we were not reimbursed for the (4) days that we did not occupy the apartment even though we suggested to the owner that this would be the fair thing to do.

Owner's Response: I respectfully thank my recent guests for their comments. I will also note that I have had many happy guests from all over the world who rated their stays and the accommodations excellent. Yes, it is my home most of the time, but with demand, I rent it half-dozen times a year to people who appreciate it. So yes you will see some family pictures. It's not a hotel. However, some of the comments are valid due to an unforeseen incident with the the tree that fell the day before their arrival. It had provided privacy and shade. On heat, It was a tremendously unseasonable heat and humidity the first few days the guests were there. It turned quite nice the day they left so there was little reason to leave at that point. Further comments below. So with all due respect, I submit the following comments: 1) Privacy The day before these guests arrived the enormous tree in my patio that provided shade and privacy fell. It was 100 years old, 80 feet high. As I mentioned to the guests, that as a result I will be adding shutters to the upper portion of the 15-foot bay windows, a more powerful A/C and tall plants in front of the windows. A Home Away rental in the front would be more expensive. 2) Heat It was a tremendously unseasonable heat and humidity the first few days the guests were there. It turned quite nice the day they left so there was little reason to leave at that point. 3) Bed: The listing very accurately states that the bed is full-sized. 4) Kitchen: The kitchen is fully equipped with stove, microwave, refrigerator, dishwasher, dishes and utensils. The pan left in the oven is my oversight. 5) Master bedroom sink: yes porcelain cracked and need to be fixed 6) Shower is fine, regularly cleaned, no mildew. I change the inside shower curtain as needed.

Beautiful condo in the heart of Back bay

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay in this condo! It is very well situated and very close to many touristic attractions and in walking distance to great shopping, restaurants and cafes. Therese was there to meet us on our arrival and went through everything with us to make sure we had a great stay. The condo is very comfortable for 3 guests and we will definitely stay there again!

Excellent Location

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at 116 Commonwealth. The location was perfect for touring Boston proper. It was nice to be in a neighborhood surrounded by shops and parks and restaurants. And the condo afforded us the space we couldn't have gotten in a hotel.

Great location

  • 5 of 5

Great location and property was as described in the listing. Walking distance to tourist attractions and safe place to stay. Pretty home and we used services described with grocery delivery and uber which made our visit easier. We liked having kitchen and laundry. The owner was accessible and I would recommend to others.
