Overview

About the property

Reinvented from an original fishing shack to a lovely 3 bedroom vacation home.

Ten years ago we gutted a 1930s 650 square foot fishing shack and expanded the footprint to create a three bedroom, two bath beach house. A labor of love, Sunbursts boasts three beautiful cedar sunbursts, three decks and a porch, a propane stove, and is nestled among heavy foliage just 4 blocks from the ocean.

Sunbursts' three bedrooms are cozy, one with a queen sized bed and two with full sized beds. A study just off the large, airy kitchen holds a sleeping bench. Two full baths, and a large living room area with DVD/video player complete the 1050 sq. ft. layout. The cabin is complete with linens, dishes, etc. with a drawer full of family games and puzzles, and a great collection of books and films. Wifi is available 24/7.

Manzanita's Hoffman Cultural Center programs events and just up the highway is Astoria with its Victorian houses and amazing maritime center, and Canon Beach with its art galleries. Between these two towns is an outlet mall and a hospital. We now have an Urgent Care center just to the south of Manzanita!

About Susan Danielson

I am recently retired professor of American Literature from Portland State University. My family moved to Oregon in 1974 and on our many trips to the coast we all dreamed of owning our own cabin. Now that my children are grown and my grandchildren live so far away I am so pleased to have a space to which I can invite them all to share some family time. To make this possible for us, I decided to rent the house for vacation times - mostly I rent to friends and colleagues and hope if you decide to rent that you will treat Sunbursts with care.

Susan Danielson purchased this cottage in 2000

Why Susan Danielson chose Manzanita

Visiting a good friend in Manzanita, I always passed this little shack, set back from the road - it was painted a dark brown with brown and yellow checked curtains and though seemingly abandoned it looked inviting to me. During a particularly difficult health crisis of one of my children we passed this cabin with a For Sale sign. Perhaps just to feel empowered I called and placed a bid on the property! Oh heavens, it was mine!

What makes this cottage unique

Next to birthing three children, Sunbursts Cottage is my most creative achievement. I had assumed I could just move right in after the sale went through, but when we tried to level the floor, the porch and plumbing fell out! The next two years my partner Harris, a construction engineer, and I, totally remodeled this little space and just 5 years ago completed an expansion. I love to come here on my own or with friends and family but I also love renting it to others to enjoy. I sometimes bring work - the quiet and the accessibility of food and hiking trails provide a great environment for my online teaching. but even better, I just relax - read, walk, drink wine and visit with neighbors.

Notes:
Manzanita is truly a small village with all the essentials for a comfortable vacation. There are at least two spas for facials and/or massages, three women's apparel shops, wonderful coffee and sweet shops and a new high end restaurant, Blackbird. A true contribution is the Hoffman Center located on Laneda that provides cultural activities, a ceramics studio and a drop in writing center. The town also boasts a strong library, also on Laneda - both of these facilities are supported by the Manzanita Community.

Perfect family rental!

  • 5 of 5

This home was so cozy, clean and well stocked! It was perfect for our family. Both teenagers had their own space but also several wonderful common areas to soak up family time, we will book again for sure!

A cozy and quiet retreat close to nature and the beach.

  • 4 of 5

We had a very nice week in Manzanita, with walks on the beach and short hikes in Sitka Spruce forests along the coast. The location of Susan's house is excellent. It's an easy 4 block walk to the beach or 'downtown' Manzanita. The house is quiet, cozy and very comfortable.

The kitchen worked fine, although it would have been helpful to know that the refrigerator is not quite roomy enough for keeping leftovers.

It was nice to have bird feeders up with chickadees and stellar jays eating away and the occasional nuthatch or hummingbird visiting the deck.

It was a wonderful week away from life as usual for the 2 of us. I'd recommend staying there and we would stay there again.

Have been meaning to leave a review for a while though I was not the person who booked the stay I have enjoyed several visits to this lovely home for girls weekends with my very best of freinds Jennifer T. I love everything about this cozy cottage from the lovely reading nook, to the best most comfy sofa ever. When the cross breeze from the open living room windows hits you it's devine and if there is soft music filtering in from the dinning room music center then all the better. I found it welcoming like a summer camp retreat for grown ups with just enough wimsey to inspire coloring on a quiet morning out on the sunny kitchen deck. The fire place is lovely and every time I've been blessed to be invited back it feels like I'm coming home. I look forward to renting it in the near future with my hubby hopefully for our anniversary I know he will be just as much in love with it as I am

Not impressed :( House very cluttered

  • 1 of 5

I've rented many houses on Homeaway/VRBO and never had experienced such a disappointment. The beds were stained, blankets had hair chunks, refrigerator and freezer were filled of old food, found prescription drugs in closets and kitchen drawers. The refrigerator is very small. Since it was full of old food, we had to buy ice and keep our stuff in coolers. The floors in the bedrooms were nasty. The owner wants you to wash all towels, linens, and take your own garbage home. I wouldn't recommend any children staying at this house, too many random pills in drawers and lots of random decorations everywhere ;( We wanted to leave the day we got there! Very disappointed!

Owner's Response: I am very disappointed to read this review which was posted after I called this family to ask them to pay my cleaner the extra she requested given the state of the house when this family left. Sunbursts has always been a comfortable, homey place and this year the whole house was repainted inside to make it particularly welcoming. Clients are asked to change the beds and do the linens and towels so that the cleaning fee can stay modest.Instead, this client didn't change the beds, didn't finish the laundry and left the floors and surfaces full of candy, chips, etc. [as per a phone call from my cleaner]. This family also left the garbage can full and all the wastebaskets in the house full of garbage; my cleaner not only had to clean up their mess but had to take their garbage to the local dump and pay the fee. I try to keep the rate for Sunbursts affordable and the house is beautiful order - please contact me if you do not find the house up to your expectations if you rent from me.

Great Cabin in awesome location!

  • 4 of 5

We has a great time at Sunburst for the holidays. The place was clean and well appointed. The kitchen and reading nook are especially inviting and comfortable. I can't wait to go back this summer to enjoy the outdoor decks and sunfilled rooms!

Thank you Susan for being so gracious and accommodating!

Home away from home!

  • 5 of 5

We recently stayed at the Sunburst for Thanksgiving with a group of adult friends. It has the feel of someone's actual home rather than a pure rental, with a lot of classy charm. We loved that this house came with three bedrooms equipped with queen or double beds, great for 3 couples. The larger bedroom even had room for a pack and play for the little one (did not try it in the other rooms). The house has plenty of room, especially the spacious kitchen where we spent most our time. The kitchen is well equipped for basic use, comes with a great sound system, and has plenty of space for people to cook and hang out. We also loved the propane heater in the living room, which was very cozy for laying around in the evenings. It was winter so we did not avail ourselves of the lovely patios, but look forward to someday visiting in the summer and getting to relax outdoors. The location is also so close to town and all the grocery stores! And we love being able to either go straight down to the beach, or go up a bit and hike down the trails to get there. I would highly recommend the Sunburst.

Manzanita
Car: necessary

Sunbursts Cottage, 1011:

Manzanita is a small oceanfront town located just off Highway 101 and close to two other small villages, Nehalem and Wheeler. With only 30 rental properties, Manzanita is always a restful place to take a vacation. On its main street, Laneda, you will find restaurants [the wonderful Bread and Ocean, delicious Mexican food, and pizza and ice cream parlors], a natural food store and two other grocery stores that provide fresh and seasonal foods. JUSt 3 miles south of Wheeler [6miles from Manzanita in total] is a fish marina, Kenny's, where you can buy live crab, oysters, and clams. Yoga classes are offered in both Manzanita and Nehalem almost everyday of the week. Just south in Nehalem and Wheeler [2-3 miles] are a winery, kayaking rentals, antiquing, and sewing center. In Nehalem the community center has a full service gym and a swimming pool. Along the 7 miles of coast find hikers, wind surfers and paragliders and great kite flying opportunities. A pie shop and restaurant are just off Highway 101 on Manzanita Ave.

But perhaps the most restful activity is found walking along the many miles of beach or making a campfire as the sun goes down.
