About this property

Sunbursts Cottage, MCA #1011, Inviting, Close-in Wooded Setting

Twenty years ago we gutted a 1930s 650 square foot fishing shack and expanded the footprint to create a three bedroom, two bath beach house. A labor of love, Sunbursts boasts three beautiful cedar sunbursts, three decks and a porch, a propane stove, and is nestled among heavy foliage just 4 blocks from the ocean.
Sunbursts' three bedrooms are cozy, one with a queen sized bed and two with full sized beds. A study just off the large, airy kitchen holds a sleeping bench. Two full baths, and a large living room area with DVD/video player complete the 1050 sq. ft. layout. The cabin is complete with linens, dishes, etc. with a drawer full of family games and puzzles, and a great collection of books and films. Wifi is available 24/7.
Manzanita's Hoffman Cultural Center programs events and just up the highway is Astoria with its Victorian houses and amazing maritime center, and Canon Beach with its art galleries. Between these two towns is an outlet mall and a hospital in Seaside. We now have an Urgent Care Center just to the south of Manzanita!

Cozy little spot close to town
We loved our stay at this cozy cabin-like home and enjoyed all of the personal touches, including the cute reading book with daybed just off the kitchen. It’s a fantastic location. If you like sleek and modern this isn’t the place for you! But we enjoyed the charm and character and had a great stay!

About the host

Host profile image
I am recently retired professor of American Literature from Portland State University. My family moved to Oregon in 1974 and on our many trips to the coast we all dreamed of owning our own cabin. Now that my children are grown and my grandchildren live so far away I am so pleased to have a space to which I can invite them all to share some family time. To make this possible for us, I decided to rent the house for vacation times - mostly I rent to friends and colleagues. To keep cleaning costs reasonable it is very important that a guests follow the instructions when leaving the house. If you decide to rent, I hope you will respect these rules to keep the house available for more visitors. THANK YOU!

Why they chose this property

Visiting a good friend in Manzanita, I always passed this little shack, set back from the road - it was painted a dark brown with brown and yellow checked curtains and though apparently abandoned, it looked inviting to me. During a particularly difficult health crisis of one of my children we passed this cabin with a For Sale sign. Perhaps just to feel empowered I called and placed a bid on the property! Oh heavens, it was mine!

What makes this property unique

Next to birthing three children, Sunbursts Cottage is my most creative achievement. I had assumed I could just move right in after the sale went through, but when we tried to level the floor, the porch and plumbing fell out! The next two years my partner Harris, a construction engineer, and I, totally remodeled this little space and just 10 years ago completed an expansion. I love to come here on my own or with friends and family but I also love renting it to others to enjoy. I sometimes bring work - the quiet and the accessibility of food and hiking trails provide a great environment for my online teaching. but even better, I just relax - read, walk, drink wine and visit with neighbors.
