About Tony Ratto

For over forty-five years, Cazadero and the Russian River has been our family summer and weekend getaway. Our family vacation home holds a special place in our hearts since our parents bought it in the summer of 1969. It holds wonderful memories and it is our pleasure to share it with you.

Tony Ratto purchased this estate in 1969

Why Tony Ratto chose Sonoma County

It is a great place to come together with family and friends. The redwoods, the creek, the sunny open space, and the location are the perfect setting for a memorable vacation. Plus, it's only a two hour drive north of San Francisco. Great for a quick weekend getaway.

Also, it's only a 5 minute drive to the Russian River and the charming town of Duncans Mills, 15 minutes to Guerneville, 15 minutes heading west to the scenic Sonoma Coast, and close to some of the best wineries in Sonoma County.

What makes this estate unique

It’s one of those places that you have to see to believe. You can enjoy spending the whole day here. As evening approaches it becomes quiet and calm. It's the perfect setting to start a warm campfire, sit back, and relax.

Guestbook comments from the owner

This place is beautiful! The pictures don't do it justice! Very well stocked and easy to find and use everything. The fire pit and hot tub are a great time and Tony is really nice and easy to deal with!

Perfection

  • 5 of 5

Mark W. gave a great review below and I second all of his comments in an attempt to not be too redundant, but I do have to add a little of my own two cents. I've utilized VRBO/Homeway for almost every vacation in the last 6 years and I have never had a better home than this one. What makes this the best:

1. Communication - Tony was amazing. Super responsive, super communicative, super nice.

2. This home has EVERYTHING you need. I wish there was a bigger font for the word "everything". Seriously - you can cook whatever your heart desires in this home. You can play games. There is plenty of wood for the fires. The grill is first rate. Chairs and tubes ready to go for your Austin Creek adventures. I could go on and on.

3. The house is spotless - eat off the floor spotless.

4. All appliances are top-notch and work perfectly.

5. Many of the homes in Caz are near the Cazadero Highway and the road noise (although not horrible), does bother some. This is tucked away across from Caz Hwy and set back off the road. It's very peaceful. You'll hear the cars when you're down on the creek, but otherwise, you truly feel away from it all.

6. Did I say this home has EVERYTHING you need? :)

And if you are contemplating a trip to Sonoma/this area and have never been, a few recommendations in addition to the great ones made in reviews below:

1. This is the perfect location if you don't mind short drives. 45 min to Healdsburg, 15 min to Guerneville, 5 min to Duncan Mills, 15 min to Jenner, 20 min to Bodega Bay. Beach, River, Wine Country all within a short distance, but yet you return to serenity and beauty of Villa Ratto.

2. Wild Flour Bakery (Freestone - a short 30 min drive) - Get the Egyptian Bread. OMG! Killer good. Only open Friday - Monday. And just down the road is the Freestone Artisan Cheese shop. Some great cheese and a lovely owner who will let you taste everything and have a great conversation with you.

3. Look at Tony's book for local farmers markets. Really great opportunity to enjoy local produce/crafts/etc. The Bodega Bay FM even had live music and food too eat.

4. Take a trip into Caz on a Saturday and look for their tiny little "farmers market". Look for the Whey Behind Blackberry jam - just like my grandma used to make it. SO good. And her soft goat cheese in the jar - amazing.

5. Sonoma Canopy Tours - super fun zip-line adventure!

And now I"m out of space. I'll use what I have left for: thank you Tony for sharing Villa Ratto!

We had an excellent time here. The house was beautiful and well equipped.

  • 4 of 5

The kitchen was well equipped and we did a lot of cooking and grilling. In addition to the hot tub we had a pool and beautiful deck for sunning. The pool patio had steps leading down to the creek where we played with our grandchild. Overall, the property was stunning with amazing redwood trees in the front and back yards. I would return here and also recommend this place to friends as an ideal place to stay when exploring this part of the Northern California coast.

Fabulous Family Gathering place

  • 5 of 5

The pictures and comments cant describe the actual atmosphere and beauty of this expansive property.

I had my family fly in from Florida and Salem Massachusetts to SFO.

We meandered up through the Bay area, through wine country, and down the River road to this most excellent destination.

As you enter the property, you cant help but look up in awesome wonder.

If you ever wanted to live among hundred year old redwoods; you have arrived.

As you enter the home and look around; the open floorplan from kitchen to dining to family room invites a few or many to gather and enjoy the views of redwoods front and back.

It was a long trip, its probably a little cold and damp; light a fire in the wood burning fireplace and relax.

The well appointed kitchen with high end appliances has a lengthy sit down bar area and allows socialization and at least two cooks in the kitchen.

The biggest local grocery store is on the left as you leave Guerneville, make sure you stop and load up on the way in.

Comfy beds and linens invite a restful and quiet nights sleep. If its not too cold, crack the windows a bit to let in the fresh forest air and snuggle beneath the thick warm comforter.

When you do decide to get out of bed, make coffee and quietly go out on the back deck. Look to the field on your right. We saw deer every morning that had come up from the creek.

WiFi, board games, Big TV

Lots of firewood

Cant say enough good things about the kitchen

Best salad spinner ever

Hot tub was awesome

Don't miss out on Rivers End restaurant up the road in Jenner ( reservations reccommended)

Sonoma Coast is known for its Pinot Noir, take advantage while you are here.

Two of the best beer breweries in the US are also close by; Russian River and Lagunitas.

If you like bubbles, visit Ironhorse.

If you like more choices, head into Santa Rosa or Healdsburg to the tasting rooms.

Tony, the owner, communicated directions, expectations and advice from the moment we first made contact.

I have had multiple rentals over the years in many states and locations and this was the best experience ever.

We will be back, count on it.

I wish I could live here!

  • 5 of 5

My friends and I came up to celebrate a birthday, and had such a wonderful time! Tony's house is so beautiful and updated, and was in such a peaceful setting. You feel so isolated since there is tons of space on the property, and it was so nice to enjoy a nice campfire each night. I was even more surprised to find how well stocked Tony's place is. He provided TONS of firewood, and every kitchen appliance you could ever need. I was so happy in the huge kitchen, and make great steaks on the grill out back . I will definitely be back!

This place is tremendous!

  • 5 of 5

The property owner/manager was very attentive to every detail. His communications, both written and voice, were superb. Once at the property, our party could not have asked for more. Everything we could have imagined to make our stay enjoyable and relaxing was there waiting for us.
