The River House is a charming, hundred year old cottage nestled on the banks of Angels Creek. It has been lovingly renovated and tastefully decorated. With two bedrooms and a bathroom it's the perfect getaway for a couple or a small family. The cabin can handle two couples, but it starts to get a bit tight with only one bathroom.
The River House is located in the quaint, historic town of Angels Camp in the heart of California's Gold Country. Yosemite, San Francisco, Tahoe, and the Bear Valley Ski Resort are an easy, scenic drive away (1-2 hours). Our guests appreciate being able to explore Northern California's big ticket attractions and then returning 'home' to the quiet and tranquility of The River House.
The River House has two bedrooms, a bathroom, a living room, kitchen, & dining area. Each bedroom has a queen size bed with cozy bedding and plush pillows. Both bedrooms have tranquil river views. The newly renovated bathroom has a shower and a separate 'soaking' room with a claw foot tub overlooking the river. The updated kitchen is fully equipped including a full size fridge, coffee maker, microwave, & blender. The charming living room has comfortable furniture and a propane stove for cozy winter evenings. There is air conditioning for the warmer summer months. The multi-tiered back deck, overlooking the river, has a 5 person jacuzzi hot tub, comfortable patio furniture and a propane BBQ. There is also a hammock strung up in the shade of the oaks and pines, perfect for whiling away the afternoon and enjoying the restful sounds of Angels Creek. There is a video link on the main page of my listing. Feel free to watch it and confirm this is exactly what you are looking for.
After relaxing and unwinding at the River House we certainly hope that you'll venture out to enjoy some of the year round activities and adventures that Calaveras County has to offer. In the summer, don't miss hiking or biking amongst the Giant Sequoias at the Calaveras Big Trees State Park. How about tubing and wake boarding on New Melones Lake? Or catching a summer concert while sipping local wines at the Ironstone Vineyard in nearby Murphys? In the winter, be sure to head up the hill to do some skiing or snow boarding at Bear Valley Mountain. And if you visit us in the spring you must plan to partake in the festivities of the world famous Jumping Frog Jubilee right in downtown Angels Camp.
We have also left some DVD's under the video Monitor. We would suggest cuddling up with the fireplace on and watching old Seinfeld Disks, or even 'Forest Gump'.
*There is no cable or internet unless you use the cellular signal. And we require no smoking inside our house.
*There is Poison Oak and thorny blackberry bushes in this area. All guests are asked to be diligent on this matter. The easiest solution is to not rub against any bushes when out walking.
*The hot tub: Such things can be tempermental, or can have mechanical issues. IF the hot-tub ever fails a guest, then there is a preset discount of $10 per day that I will return to you to offset this problem. (as of July 2016 the unit has never failed)
*In June of 2013, there was a report of a rattlesnake near the back deck. This old cabin is more in the wild then other stuff you will find online (even though you are so close to Angels Camp). If you want to rent in a subdivision or a hotel, where there is no chance of rattlesnakes or adventure, then this is not for you.
*If you or your kids collect the crawdads (which is kind of fun to do), then please return them safely to the river after playing with them.
ODD POLICIES: Occasionally I will not accept a shorter stay that is wanted months away, as it has proven to then keep me from taking longer term reservations later.
RETURN POLICY: If you reserve and then need to cancel, I will re-market the dates and if I can rent those dates to another, then I return the money.
-There is no daily maid service, so any guest staying over two days will be asked to put in a spoonful or two of chlorine every other day, while the spa is running.
-The toilet is an old wall mounted tank (100 year old) with a pull handle. It works great and makes a loud flush noise. However... due to being right by the creek, I have to pump the effluent up to the sewer. Due to this, any foreign items can clog the pump and than bad things happen. We ask all guests to be aware of this small item.
We hope to see you soon!
Steve & Stephanie
Gaige, Haviland, & Ellery
We're the Stewarts. Steve and Stephanie. And our three kids Gaige, Haviland, & Ellery. We live the American dream. You know - driving kids all over to various activities, conferencing with teachers, laundry, helping teenagers study for driving exams, teaching first graders to read, more laundry, trips to WalMart for sandwich meat and toilet paper, and, of course, working long hours to pay for it all. Occasionally, we stumble upon a weekend with no traveling soccer games and we hit the high road to The River House for a weekend of pure relaxation.
Steve Stewart purchased this cottage in 2012
We purchased the River House in 2012. We absolutely loved the location on the river and the historic character and charm of the cottage. We knew that it would take some TLC to renovate it, but we were excited to bring it back to its former glory. So we set about cleaning, painting, plumbing, sanding, tiling and spit shining. And now a year later, shiny it is. Some day we hope to retire and bring our grandkids here. But until then, we're offering it for rent so that you might enjoy it in our stead.
The very best thing about the River House is the tranquil, relaxing setting. The gurgling creek, whispering trees, and singing birds encourage us to relax in spite of our dizzying, fast paced 'real' life.
We have learned that material things mean very little. So little in fact, that we have placed our 50 year old China (made in Japan in 1967) as some of the dishes in the Cabin.
It is fine with us if you (and your kids) use these old dishes and if one happens to break... we will survive it.
We have also placed some old cameras and slide watching equipment from the 1940's in the display case. It is OK with us if these items are moved and admired.
*We have 3 kids and are pretty bullet-proof by this point in our lives.
Great experience. The cabin feels larger than it actually is due to not being cluttered but it is very comfortable indeed. Also, its very clean and user friendly - the kitchen is spacious, modern and functional.
The deck consists of a CLEAN hot tub in the back with steps down to a river and more seating. Its hard to get this anywhere else. The thought that the owners have put into the cabin does make a difference. Ranging from the quality kitchen utensils to the rope lighting outside, its a superb experience. BBQ wasn't cleaned - but mistakes happen. The beds are firm and comfortable with high quality thread count and again - spotless!
Well done !
My husband and I booked a weekend getaway and found this great house in Angels Camp. The deck is lovely and overlooks a creek. The house is well appointed with attention to detail.
We had a lovely time in this very cute and comfortable home, felt as though we where in the mountains alone, if not for the few cars driving by the upper road. So close to the other towns we wanted to visit, our day trips where awesome. We both look forward to our next visit around May. Wanted to book it now but was told can't book that far in advance. So if your looking for some alone time together, this is your place. The creek is wonderful. we left the window open at night and had our own personal sound machine :) If you use the hot tub make sure you turn it up for a few hours before use.

We enjoyed our stay at the cabin, was very relaxing and peaceful, the sound of the river at night will put you to sleep. The location was private, and the view of the stars at night was awesome. Look forward to visiting again in the near future.
This is a wonderful place to stay. It was my husband, 5 year old son and myself. Plenty of room for all of us. Nicely furnished and decorated. Clean. Claw-foot tub was AWESOME! Creek was fun to play in. Deck was nice to sit and reflect as well as read and write. Very good, positive energy surrounding the entire property. A nice flow to entire cottage with plenty of room in and outside the home. We are already trying to figure out the next time we can visit and stay again. A few notes: you could hear some cars during the day passing by the main road but not the road the property was on. Not distracting but if you are looking for complete silence there are a few cars that go by. There were lots of fruit on trees right outside the back door (kumquats maybe). They fell off the tree a lot and you had to watch not stepping on them to make your shoes dirty and track them into the cottage. All in all a great place to be away from it all.
Had a great time at the cottage, everything was very clean and even better than pictured. The kids really enjoyed catching and releasing the crawdads in the river and we were even able to float on tubes, very relaxing nature setting. The hot tub was a bonus in the evening and the bbq pit made for easy dinners. We went to New Melones lake and rented a boat, was very close to the cottage as well as Moaring cabins where the kids got to climb the rock wall, staff there were very friendly. Small shopping center nearby and a great diner too. Perfect little get away. A thank you also to the cleaning lady who responded quickly to our request to have a late check out while Steve was away. Thank you for sharing this wonderful place with us, we hope to be back!
The River House is nestled in the heart of California's Gold Country within easy driving distance to all varieties of year round outdoor activities.
