Please note - WE DO NOT ALLOW ANY PARTIES OR GATHERINGS AT THE SEA CAPTAIN'S HOME. New York natives who love Long Island and love the North Fork. We are both creative types, and so we appreciate the craftsmanship that went into the creation of this unique home. We love it with all our hearts.
Maria Capotorto Joseph Zizzo purchased this house in 1999
Truly built by a wealthy sea captain in 1860, it was owned by the same fishing family until the late 1970's. We are the fourth owners of this classic home, which has since been updated with modern amenities. The North Fork is like no other place in the world, and we have been to many! The fishing and farming cultures have engendered a work ethic and an appreciation of nature in the people of the area that we really love.
You really feel the history of the North Fork in this house, in addition to enjoying the abundant nature
"The weekend we spent this last Memorial Day holiday was the kickoff to a great summer. The spring bloom was amazing at the Sea Captain's Home, with azaleas, rhododendrons and japanese snowballs in all their blazing glory. The weekend was a little rainy, but we loved hanging out in the house, which has big rooms and is very spacious. we played board games at the dining room table, and we watched videos on the comfy couch in the back parlor. we cooked amazing meals in the kitchen as well... overall just a fun, relaxing time to enjoy the company of friends we don't get to see much anymore..."
We held a "ladies weekend" in October and the house had plenty of room for our group of seven. Sitting in the kitchen area, around the dining room table, or lounging in the family room or backyard – it was comfortable and relaxing! Eclectic decor adds to the character of the home and we truly enjoyed our time there. The kitchen was well stocked for cooking, lots of games to play, and a new audio system for tunes. ;) The owners were responsive and easy to work with. We loved the location – easy to get to Shelter Island, farm stands, Orient Point, vineyards, and, of course, Greenport. Wish we could go there once a month!!
Nine of us stayed at this beautiful home in North Fork. First of all, Maria & Joe could not have been better. They were very helpful & responded to all my questions-- big or small-- within no more than a day (if not hours). Their home was absolutely GORGEOUS. The decorations were beautiful, the home well-kept & the layout was great for our group. The amenities were very nice & clean. The location is also perfect - it was close enough to most everything, but far enough that we had some quiet time. Would highly recommend to everyone!
My life long girlfriends and I stayed at the Sea Captain's Home for a wine tasting weekend. There were 11 of us. The house offered plenty of room and plenty of history. We were able to make a huge sit down dinner on Friday night and enjoyed all the house had to offer. We were minutes from wineries, Greenport, and the ferry as many of us came in from Boston. The owners were great to deal with. I can't say enough good things. We all want to come back next October.
We stay here every year for a weekend of wine tasting on the North Fork. The house is beautiful with a lot of gorgeous, historical charm, and is very convenient to buses, trains, and ferries.
The house was perfect. It retains its historic charm, but has many modern conveniences. Very clean, and comfortable for guests. The backyard is a peaceful place to relax, and you forget you are on the main road. But the convenience to the ferry and to Greenport make it an ideal location. So close to the beach also. we enjoyed sitting out on the front porch drinking coffee in the morning, riding bikes to watch the sunset on the beach, perfect setting!
We spent a glorious week at this house in August 2015. It is utterly charming, both the house itself and the decor. The kitchen is very well stocked, there are fun toys, the yard (with outdoor shower!) is huge and rustic, and it's perfectly situated for exploring the North Fork. It's within biking distance of lovely sound and bay beaches, and driving distance to several more. Walk to the farm stand and the general store, bike into Greenport or Orient - just perfect. East Marion is far enough out to be reasonably quiet - not the mob scene you see further west on the NF. One thing to note, which wasn't bad but just good to know, is that it is on quite a busy road and the yard isn't fenced, per se (although the back and front are fairly well divided by the house). That said, while I was worried about our toddler initially, the yard was big and fun enough that she didn't have much interest in wandering beyond it. All in all, I truly hope we can come back to this house again and again - it's that special.
