Great place for a large family

  • 5 of 5

We were delighted with the property during our stay in mid July. As a big group (six adults and five children), we were looking for a house that would allow us to cook our own meals, have spaces to gather and spaces to be alone, and to play in the pool between excursions. Candlewood House fit the bill. It is large, comfortable, and has all the amenities we needed. Rose cleaned the house mid-stay. The house is on the tip of the island about 20 minutes from downtown Nassau, but Craig and Ricardo from Cheryl's Taxi Service transported us around the island whenever we wanted to do some tourism.

We highly recommend a visit to Blue Lagoon Island. Take the first boat (leaves around 8:30 am) and you'll get two hours of quiet before the cruise people start arriving and the beaches fill up. We also recommend the public Cabbage Beach for an inexpensive day of sun and clear waters.

Great place to stay

  • 5 of 5

We were 4 mature couples staying at this property from March 31 to April 11/17. Our initial reaction was the house seemed older than in the posted pictures but overall we came to be very pleased with our choice as it was very spacious, had everything we needed, and the pool was a good size and well maintained. The maid, Rose, showed up once a week to clean, do laundry etc. and we were very impressed with her service and friendliness. We were able to cook a lot of our own meals as the grocery store was located a mere 20 minutes' walk away. The property is located across the street from the water and a 10 minute walk will bring you to a useable sandy beach. We used Cheryl's taxi service for transportation and were impressed with their promptness and dependability. Cheryl's husband, Craig, was the usual driver and we enjoyed his friendly easy-going personality and his knowledge of the island. He took us on a tour of the island on one of our first days there which gave us a good perspective on what areas we would like to visit further. We also used the local bus service ($1.25 per person) to downtown on several occasions as it passes directly in front of the house before 9 a.m. on weekdays and runs until 6 p.m. (Bus 9 to go to town and 15A to return). Some of the activities which we did and would highly recommend: the 1-day pass at Sandals Resort ($110. person) and the Flying Cloud 5-hour catamaran tour. We tried some of the nearby restaurants and would recommend Palm Cay and Montagu Gardens. Overall a very enjoyable vacation.

Great Stay!

  • 4 of 5

We took a group of 10 high school graduates for their senior trip and chose to stay at Candlewood. We are so glad we did! Besides the occasional (typical for bahamas) low water pressure, the trip was seamless and comfortable. Our stay at Candlewood was wonderful! We require the services of Kim only once and though she was not available to come, she sent her very sweet husband to get the job done. She accommodated our needs as a large group and coming from a school. Money transaction was great as well. We loved having a beautiful home to go to and the end of a long day touring around. The teens LOVED the pool! We had a few chats with the neighbors who are also VERY nice! We had everything we needed and felt very safe. Thanks to Kim, her husband, the cleaning lady and the neighbors, our stay was wonderful! I recommend this home/renter and would use her again!

Spring Break!

  • 4 of 5

Loved the house, host was VERY accommodating, was cool being integrated into the island and not at an enclosed resort. Enjoyed walking through the neighborhoods and being near the water, pool was perfect, so much space, we had 10 and never felt cramped. Well equipped kitchen, grill was brand new (local fishmongers had huge lobster, snapper, trigger fish and more), would definitely stay there again, thanks!

First, when we arrived the A/C was cutting on and off. Not a great first impression, but Kim did stay until the issue was resolved.

However, this issue just foreshadowed how outdated the home was. The home is in need of a lot of work. The comforters in several of the rooms literally had blood stains on them and I was assured by the house keeper that the sheets and comforters were just old but had been washed prior to our stay.

Secondly, we were informed that we could not get extra toilet paper even though there was nine of us staying in the house. How will your guests be comfortable where toilet paper is being rationed; i.e. (two to a bathroom.)

Paper towels for the kitchen were also rationed and we had to ultimately buy some extra rolls ourselves.

Next, we had to deal with an inmense amount of insects and reptiles - ants on the toilets and crawling up the corners of the shower and several lizards. Although we understand we are in a tropical environment, ants should never be crawling inside the home if it is properly maintained and fumigated.

Also in the lower masterbed room, upon opening the closest door the door fell off the hinges; as well as several shutters missing from the closest door. Please view attachment.

Speaking of the bathroom, we were only provided with eight face towels when there were nine people residing in the home. The water pressure was quite inadequate for the size of the home. If more than one person was showering, that would cause the other guests to make sure the person was finished before taking their showers. If the showers weren't organized, one person would ultimately be left with an extremely low pressure and cold shower.

Upon arriving, the housekeeper asked us how often we wanted her to cook meals. In previous emails we indicated we wanted a housekeeper to clean the home everyday. It was made clear through you that we wanted someone to clean the home daily as well as cook breakfast everyday. Neither of which happened, which means at some point the communication fell short.

Also, there was a huge lack of direction in getting to this house. No one on the island knew where the house was located, except for a few members from Cheryl's Transportation service; we were asked to stand on the main road so someone would be able to spot us.

Owner's Response: Your review stands in marked contrast to all the others received over the past 2½ years. I am sorry your stay was so unpleasant. It was for us, too. Anyone at all familiar with the Caribbean knows to expect some ants and geckos, the occasional power outage and variable water pressure. It really isn’t the same as Houston, and we obviously have no control over the utility supply. Your travel agent knew exactly what was included in the rental and the extra services offered by the housekeeper. Any communication failure was at your end. In any case, it must be said that the housekeeper found your arrogant attitude and open disdain for the local people so offensive that she preferred to have no dealings with you apart from those we had arranged as part of the rental. Trying to dupe her into working for you for free, by claiming it was included in the rental, did not help. Likewise, after a couple of rides the local taxi firm said they would no longer serve you due to your behavior in the cabs and your rudeness. Your determination to complain about everything was evident from the outset and your review bears this out. Your remarks about the bed linens are both inaccurate and insulting.
