Overview

About the property

3 Bedrooms, Artist Studio, 1 Bath, in small rural hamlet

Casita Estella is a wonderful 200 year old adobe home located in the small community of Mogote, Colorado. Originally this town was created by Missionaries from Spain, wanting to establish a Presbyterian community when all surrounding areas were of the Catholic faith. The founding family still lives here and celebrates their special historic church, Dios de Amor, erected in 1895.

Conejos County is known for it's fly fishing and outdoor activities, but it also draws artists from all over the country looking for big skies and dramatic landscapes. Casita Estella has been a guest house for a nationally recognized landscape painter and an accomplished teacher and mentor. The studio provided a space for students to work independently, while exploring the surrounding countryside.

The house sits at the mouth of the Conejos Canyon and is steps away from Conejos River. We are minutes away from historic narrow gauge Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railway which runs over the 10,015 ft Cumbres Pass and through the Toltec Gorge. It is a known for beautiful scenery while traveling through the Conejos Canyon and arriving in the quaint town of Chama, NM.

THINGS TO DO IN THE AREA:

*World Class Fly Fishing / guides available for booking

*Lake fishing in the Platuro Resevoir

*Multiple hiking trails

*Mountain biking- steps from the house

*45 minute drive to famous Taos, NM

*2 hours to Santa Fe, NM

*1 hour to the well known Ojo Caliente Hot Springs/Spa

*A day trip to the Sand Dunes National Park, just outside

the town of Alamosa

The Conejos County is known for it's varied landscapes, it's cooler summers, and quieter lifestyle. It is filled with great excursions to small towns, artist communities, sand dunes, New Mexican Villages and Reservations and all the outdoor activities you can imagine. You will fall in love with this area, just as we did.

About Lexie Carlson

I am a retired art teacher who spent my career teaching and living in Denver, Colorado. When I retired I wanted to spend more time with my dear friend who lived in Southern Colorado. He was an incredible artist who became well known for his representational paintings of the Conejos River and the surrounding areas. We spent a great deal of time exploring this beautiful area and visiting the towns of San Luis, Taos, Abiquiu, Chama, Ojo Calliente, Santa Fe and Albuquerque. There is so much history here and given the time to discover is a true gift.

Lexie Carlson purchased this cottage in 2010

Why Lexie Carlson chose South Central

In 2010 my friend's neighbor, Estella, gave us the opportunity to buy this 200 year old adobe home, which was directly behind his adobe home and studio. He was able to offer his many students a place to stay while they worked with him in their plein aire painting studies.

This house has a small studio, with wonderful natural light that is perfect for anyone who is interested in painting, but also a quiet and rural location to relax in.

What makes this cottage unique

We are a quarter mile away from the Conejos River, sitting at the mouth of the Conejos Canyon which offers fishing, hiking trails, bike trails, lake fishing, hunting, camping etc. You will never lack for beautiful landscapes in this hidden treasure of Southern Colorado.

Felt very welcomed

  • 5 of 5

We felt at home at Casita Estella. It was just the right size for our family and it was obvious that consideration went into making guests feel welcome; examples of this are the framed art on the walls, dried flower arrangements, extra towels, basket of blankets in the living room, board games, DVDS, and helpful tourist information. And of course, the coffee was greatly appreciated. Lexie was incredibly friendly and helpful. We enjoyed our stay. I hope to stay again sometime, as we did not have enough time to see everything we would have liked to see.

Wonderful attention to detail!

  • 5 of 5

What a great place! Everything we needed was provided. There was even shampoo and conditioner provided! The Casita is centrally located in the San Luis Valley. We went to Taos, Creed and the sand dunes. The weather is perfect in September. Thank you again!

Comfy and eclectic, with lots of thoughtful touches

  • 5 of 5

This is an old house with an eclectic style and a quirky floor plan; it is also roomy, comfy, and has lots of thoughtful touches throughout. There was plenty of room for the four people in our party. There are fans, nightlights, good information about local things to do, lots of blankets, sheets, towels, etc. all neatly laid out for each guest. Kitchen is very complete. The area is very, very quiet and interesting in a rural New Mexico sort of way: it's a short drive to the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad station, there's beautiful scenery all around, and some old, mildly neglected historical buildings are tucked here and there (including an old church a short walk down the little lane on which the house is situated). There is, I believe, excellent fishing nearby, and we drove to a campground/riverside trail not far away. The owner was very helpful, kind, and communicative. It was very restful to stay here, and we hope to do so again whenever we're in the area.

Great Property - Great Value

  • 5 of 5

My family and I stayed here in July 2014 and had an amazing vacation. The property was clean, well kept and more spacious than expected. All the comforts of home were included. I would highly recommend staying at this property if you have the chance. I know we will return next summer if not sooner.

Wonderful Place

  • 5 of 5

Our family LOVED this place!! Lexie was GREAT and she made sure we had enough beds for our teenagers and some. We stayed there for 2+ days and we didn't want to leave. It was a great location, very relaxing, close to nature and it made us feel right at home. We will definitely make sure to stay here every time we return to Antonito. Thank you!!!

Family of five

Very comfortable. The water for the shower was a little too cool for me. Possibly raising the temperature on the water heater will help with this. It was a cozy home that we would like to stay at next time. Having the fire pit will be an extra plus.
