Spectacular Volcano And Lake Views, Modern Bali-style House

Bedrooms 2
Space 1,150 sq ft
Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

Come have breakfast with our resident TOUCAN ARCHIE!!! He loves guests and fruit!!!

Casa Karon is a breathtaking new home, custom built to take advantage of the beautiful surroundings while still having every comfort. It enjoys views of the majestic volcano, the tranquil lake complete with wind turbines on the horizon, rolling pasture lands, and the lush rainforest.

The house is modern Bali-style architecture. Construction finished in 2013. It is a gorgeous combination of steel and sharp angles with natural stone and wood. The whole house is furnished with custom-made furniture and cabinets made from the most beautiful local hardwoods. The ceilings are vaulted and 20 feet high. There are two bedrooms, one with a view of the lake and mountains (one queen size and one small sofa bed), the other with a view of the volcano (one full size bed). The bathroom has an oversize slate shower and double vanity. The kitchen is fully-equipped with new appliances, and we provide the basics- salt and pepper, paper towels, soap, etc. The living room has an oversize double sliding glass door which opens wide to give the sensation that the deck and the living room are one in the same. Without a doubt, the best feature of the house is the exotic wood bench and bar that runs along the entire length of the covered deck. Guests can sit and dangle their feet in the air with a drink or meal, and take in the majestic views below.

Also offered for your enjoyment are a hot tub, a beautiful fire pit with formed-benches, and an immense grill. If you just feel like staying in, we offer Netflix movies, high-speed Wi-Fi, a selection of DVD’s, and board games.

When you venture out, we are a 15 minute drive to do some spelunking in the Venado Caves. La Fortuna is 45 minutes away where you can visit natural hot springs, go canopy jumping, horseback riding, four-wheeling, visit the snake and reptile zoo, indulge in a spa treatment and do some souvenir shopping. Other day trips will take you to magical waterfalls or the crystal-clear blue water of Rio Celeste. The entire area around Lake Arenal is a cyclist’s heaven, with excellent roads and trails to navigate.

It is a perfect place to connect with nature. Our guests will enjoy the marvels of all the local wildlife right at their door-step. The call of the 'congos' swinging through the trees, gigantic toads, a myriad of brightly colored insects and butterflies, bromeliads growing all over the trees, exotic flowers. Bird watchers will be in heaven here in overlooking the treetops at the toucans, hawks, vultures, hummingbirds, parrots and more.

The house is located in a spacious gated community 10 kilometers up the mountain on a country dirt road from the town of Nuevo Arenal. The road is in decent condition at most times (depending on rainfall). A rental car is a must, and 4x4 recommended. The development is secluded, yet still close to town and all the local amenities. Being higher in elevation, you will always enjoy a fresher, crisper, breezier climate than 'down the mountain'- between 5-10 degrees difference on average. Unlike many beach areas in Costa Rica where it is always the same weather-hot and humid- here you can experience a refreshing mix of sunshine and heat with rain, clouds, mist, and cooler weather. Our family lives on the property as well with our 2 large dogs. The two houses are separated completely, and we will never interfere, but are glad to be of any assistance if needed.

The town of Nuevo Arenal has three grocery stores, a bank with an ATM, two pharmacies, gift shops, a gas station, and several bars and restaurants. There is also a "laundromat" in town where you can bring your soiled clothing to be washed, dried and folded (charged per kilo). The town is 20-30 minute drive from the house, depending on road conditions. Because of the distance to town, we always recommend that our guests do any shopping for provisions BEFORE heading up the mountain. We also HIGHLY recommend arriving before nightfall if possible, as the road to our house is dark and bumpy, and can be disconcerting to weary travelers.

Pura vida!

Why Michael and Kelly Karon chose Nuevo Arenal

2 Words---Resident Toucan!

After traveling all of Costa Rica in search of our dream property, we knew in an instant this was our paradise. It was a combination of cooler weather, lush rainforest, lake and volcano views and above all privacy, peace and security. Casa Karon is pure Costa Rica, our little piece of heaven.

A oasis in the clouds

  • 4 of 5

We had an awesome time and Micheals place. He was so kind and welcoming. The kids loved the pool and we had a great time exploring the grounds. The place was beautiful, clean and comfortable. It’s a bit of a drive to the sites but well worth the effort. Thanks for a great stay. Highly recommend. My brother in law said.... it’s the kind of place you could hide away at and write a book. A great spot.

Perfect home for a week of adventure!

  • 5 of 5

We'd like to thank Michael and Kelly for a wonderful week in Costa Rica. The house is clean and well maintained. The pictures don't do justice to the view from the deck of the house. The grounds are beautiful and the new pool looks like a lot of fun. Michael shared a number of tips with us that you can only learn from a local. We ate in great restaurants and zip-lined, kayaked, swam in hot springs and toured a chocolate farm and butterfly conservatory. The house is close enough to La Fortuna to do day trips. We highly recommend the house for active families.

Pura Vida

  • 5 of 5

We started a twenty two day vacation which we drove North to South Costa Rica / Panama and by the end we all agreed we could have done our whole vaca staying at Micheals. For us the climate was perfect the house, the beds, the views were the best. Micheal went above and beyond and we have ourselves a new friend and so appreciate all you did. Yes the road in is part of the adventure but was not at all difficult. If your looking for heat go to the beach on the coast. Archie whom Micheal nursed to health is a wild Toucan that topped our vaca. We miss him as I'm sure anyone who has interacted with this bird would agree. He was the highlight of our trip. Thank you Micheal for sharing your home and sparking the dream of what is possible. Cheers till we see you again. Peggy&Ray, John & Judi.

Gorgeous views...

  • 5 of 5

What a great place! Casa Karon was very comfortable, with two generous bedrooms and a gorgeous bathroom with a huge shower. The view from the deck overlooking Lake Arenal was spectacular. Though it is a bit of a drive to the activities over in La Fortuna, we loved driving into town for some adventures, and then coming home to the peace and quiet of Arenal. The host is incredibly nice and helpful, and had great recommendations for things to do and places to eat. Finally, the resident toucan, Archie, is a real character, and made this beautiful place even more special. We had a great stay.

Missing Archie!

  • 5 of 5

This is the first house we stayed in Costa Rica. The house is very well designed and clean. It is situated up in the forest with amazing views overlooking Lake Arenal. We were lucky enough to have a wild pet Toucan (Archie) come visit us on the deck everyday. Michael, the owner, saved him from a possum attack and he’s never left! Thanks for providing us food to feed him! Michael was a great host. He gave us great tips on what to do and eat in the area. He always made sure to tell us to call him if we had any questions or issues which was comforting. There was a pool being built for the house while we were there that looked amazing! As others have reviewed, there is indeed a loooong windy potholed bumpy road leading to the house from Nuevo Arenal. You will need a 4x4.. in rainy season probably a 4wd. It took us 25 mns from Nuevo Arenal to the house but I’m a slow cautious driver so maybe less for others. We truly had a great time here. Loved La Fortuna which was about an hour drive (for us) from the house. I miss Archie and Michael’s beautiful friendly dogs. Thanks for everything!

Paradise on earth!

  • 5 of 5

This beautiful property was our home for a week during our stay in Nuevo Arenal. We have stayed at many hotels, inns, B&Bs, AirBnBs, etc. but none of them compare to this.

We enjoyed the spectacular views from the deck for hours and it was extremely convenient (and cost-saving) to be able to prepare meals in the well appointed kitchen. The large bathroom had plenty of space for two adults with two teenage girls. Everything was clean and modern and felt home-like.

Michael and Kelly are wonderful hosts. We always felt they were ready to help us when needed yet we also had as much privacy as we wanted.

If you decide to book, say hello to our little friend Archie the resident toucan. We miss him.
