Spectacular Volcano And Lake Views, Modern Bali-style House

Bedrooms 2
Space 1,147 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

Casa Karon is a breathtaking new home, custom built to take advantage of the beautiful surroundings while still having every comfort. It enjoys views of the majestic volcano, the tranquil lake complete with wind turbines on the horizon, rolling pasture lands, and the lush rainforest.

The house is modern Bali-style architecture. Construction finished in 2013. It is a gorgeous combination of steel and sharp angles with natural stone and wood. The whole house is furnished with custom-made furniture and cabinets made from the most beautiful local hardwoods. The ceilings are vaulted and 20 feet high. There are two bedrooms, one with a view of the lake and mountains (one queen size and one small sofa bed), the other with a view of the volcano (one full size bed). The bathroom has an oversize slate shower and double vanity. The kitchen is fully-equipped with new appliances, and we provide the basics- salt and pepper, paper towels, soap, etc. The living room has an oversize double sliding glass door which opens wide to give the sensation that the deck and the living room are one in the same. Without a doubt, the best feature of the house is the exotic wood bench and bar that runs along the entire length of the covered deck. Guests can sit and dangle their feet in the air with a drink or meal, and take in the majestic views below.

Also offered for your enjoyment are a hot tub, a beautiful fire pit with formed-benches, and an immense grill. If you just feel like staying in, we offer Netflix movies, high-speed Wi-Fi, a selection of DVD’s, and board games.

When you venture out, we are a 15 minute drive to do some spelunking in the Venado Caves. La Fortuna is 45 minutes away where you can visit natural hot springs, go canopy jumping, horseback riding, four-wheeling, visit the snake and reptile zoo, indulge in a spa treatment and do some souvenir shopping. Other day trips will take you to magical waterfalls or the crystal-clear blue water of Rio Celeste. The entire area around Lake Arenal is a cyclist’s heaven, with excellent roads and trails to navigate.

It is a perfect place to connect with nature. Our guests will enjoy the marvels of all the local wildlife right at their door-step. The call of the 'congos' swinging through the trees, gigantic toads, a myriad of brightly colored insects and butterflies, bromeliads growing all over the trees, exotic flowers. Bird watchers will be in heaven here in overlooking the treetops at the toucans, hawks, vultures, hummingbirds, parrots and more.

The house is located in a spacious gated community 10 kilometers up the mountain on a country dirt road from the town of Nuevo Arenal. The road is in decent condition at most times (depending on rainfall). A rental car is a must, and 4x4 recommended. The development is secluded, yet still close to town and all the local amenities. Being higher in elevation, you will always enjoy a fresher, crisper, breezier climate than 'down the mountain'- between 5-10 degrees difference on average. Unlike many beach areas in Costa Rica where it is always the same weather-hot and humid- here you can experience a refreshing mix of sunshine and heat with rain, clouds, mist, and cooler weather. Our family lives on the property as well with our 2 large dogs. The two houses are separated completely, and we will never interfere, but are glad to be of any assistance if needed.

The town of Nuevo Arenal has three grocery stores, a bank with an ATM, two pharmacies, gift shops, a gas station, and several bars and restaurants. There is also a "laundromat" in town where you can bring your soiled clothing to be washed, dried and folded (charged per kilo). The town is 20-30 minute drive from the house, depending on road conditions. Because of the distance to town, we always recommend that our guests do any shopping for provisions BEFORE heading up the mountain. We also HIGHLY recommend arriving before nightfall if possible, as the road to our house is dark and bumpy, and can be disconcerting to weary travelers.

Pura vida!

Why Kelly Karon chose Nuevo Arenal

After traveling all of Costa Rica in search of our dream property, we knew in an instant this was our paradise. It was a combination of cooler weather, lush rainforest, lake and volcano views and above all privacy, peace and security. Casa Karon is pure Costa Rica, our little piece of heaven.

Paradise on earth!

  • 5 of 5

This beautiful property was our home for a week during our stay in Nuevo Arenal. We have stayed at many hotels, inns, B&Bs, AirBnBs, etc. but none of them compare to this.

We enjoyed the spectacular views from the deck for hours and it was extremely convenient (and cost-saving) to be able to prepare meals in the well appointed kitchen. The large bathroom had plenty of space for two adults with two teenage girls. Everything was clean and modern and felt home-like.

Michael and Kelly are wonderful hosts. We always felt they were ready to help us when needed yet we also had as much privacy as we wanted.

If you decide to book, say hello to our little friend Archie the resident toucan. We miss him.

The view is worth the drive!

  • 5 of 5

Possible the best view in Costa Rica, looking out to Lago Arenal from the deck!!! The house and property are well-kept and nicely furnished. The owner, Michael, lives next door and is very helpful with questions and ideas for best places to visit and ways to get there. His gardener is there all day so house is very safe and looked after. Although a wonderful house for a couple or a family with older kids, I would not recommend it for kids under 4. We had to really hover over our 2 year old on the deck, and there wasn't a safe place for her to eat without one of us holding her because the chairs are all high and not sturdy for little ones. Expect a ~40ish minute drive, partly on rocky steep roads, to Arenal/La Fortuna area -- 4-wheel drive recommended. But the view is worth the drive!!!

A hilltop retreat with amazing views

  • 5 of 5

9.5 km doesn’t seem far unless you’re driving down a bouncy, twisty dirt road. But at the end of the road there is a pot of gold with a beautiful hilltop home overlooking the valley and Lake Arenal. The views are spectacular, and after a cool night’s sleep you awaken to a cacophony of birds. The temperate climate is definitely a plus in the very warm Arenal area. Michael was a most entertaining, gracious and oh so helpful host. He helped with reservations and back road detours and he just makes you smile. Kelly arranged our day trips, like rafting the Balsa River, an amazing adventure with knowledgeable and entertaining guides from the very safety conscious, professional Desafio Tours. The next day, a relaxing afternoon at Ecotermales Hot Springs soothed our sore muscles. Our most memorable meal during our entire stay in Costa Rica was at Neuvo Arenal’s The Gingerbread, where we opted for Chef Eyal’s offerings rather than ordering from the menu. Like his cuisine, Chef Eyal is larger than life. The property is a bit out of the way, but so worth the drive for the views, quiet, and climate. Many thanks to Michael, Kelly and Jax for a memorable visit.

Magical Christmas Stay in the Cloud Forest

  • 5 of 5

Wow! What a place! This home really is amazing and an incredible way to experience the cloud forest and the rain forest. We arrived on Christmas Eve and enjoyed a relaxing week there. The home is beautiful, airy and very clean. The views are incredible and the grounds are beautifully landscaped with exotic flowers and walking paths (nice job, Michael!) There were five of us and we never felt crowded. The bedrooms are comfortable and there were plenty of blankets and linens to keep us cozy. The rain absolutely pours up there but it isn't cold. The kitchen was well equipped and we were able to cook a number of meals there. The bath is large and the double sink and stone shower give it a spa-like feeling. The only drawback was not having a washer/dryer (though we learned having that seems to be a great luxury in Costa Rica. (We took our laundry into La Fortuna and found a very reasonable laundry service at the entrance of town.) The owner, Michael, was very helpful and gave us suggestions for outings. If you stay and are going to La Fortuna, , ask him for directions using the back road. It is definitely 4-wheel drive, but saves you lots of time. Nuevo Arenal was about 20 minutes from the house; La Fortuna was about 1:15. The house was gated and in a beautiful development. We always felt very safe. I would not hesitate to recommend this property to any friends or family. It is really a hidden gem in an already incredible area.

Beautiful Grounds

  • 5 of 5

My family of 4 stayed here through Hurricane Otto (yes, we lived through a historic hurricane). Just our luck but what a great place we picked. The house is perched up on top of the mountain (a 15 minute drive to town) so we were able to see everything. The owner lives on the property so we felt very safe and could ask any questions about local activities and food. Our kids were able to run around the grounds, pick fruit and play with the dogs. We also played numerous board games while stuck inside. Once the rains and wind cleared, we were so happy to see the beautiful lake arenal. We were able to drive to arenal and do the free hot springs and hike the volcano in one day. Enjoy your time here if you decide to rent!

Best vacation ever!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed here for 7 nights. This was our base of operation throughout our time in Costa Rica as everything we wanted to experience on this trip was within a 90 minute drive. The view is absolutely stunning from the deck of this home. We saw more birds (number and diversity) sitting on this deck than anywhere else in Costa Rica (we visited several national parks and a private reserve).

The weather was absolutely perfect. Much cooler at this elevation than the town of Nuevo Arenal below. There was a constant breeze that kept us cool even in the heat of the day. It seemed to rain most nights and was misty many of the mornings, but it cleared up quickly and we experienced a great deal of sun here. I was concerned we would be hot at night with no air conditioning, but that was not a problem. In fact, the constant breeze kept us on the cool side at night (perfect sleeping temps!).

From this base of operations we experienced the Tenorio National Park, Arenal National Park, Monteverde Cloud Forest (and zip lining!!), a private reserve, and much more. We were also able to experience the culture of Costa Rica by our trips into Nuevo Arenal, La Fortuna and the surrounding area.

Michael was an outstanding host. He was very gracious and patient. He provided a great deal of information that helped us get from place to place and learn about the culture. We got there late our first evening and didn't have time to stop at the grocery store before arriving. Michael generously provided breakfast for us in the morning. He also has many life experiences that I enjoyed listening to.

The peace and serenity that my wife and I experienced at Casa Karon really made this our best vacation ever. We were both completely stressed by life's demands prior to our arrival, and felt totally reinvigorated by our stay here. We would certainly stay here again if we vacation in Costa Rica in the future.
