About Helen Luuwai
Married into the family of this stunning property in the late 1950s. Raised our 3 boys on Maui and worked in local government for 14 years. Purchased the property from a family member and have operated our piece of paradise for 15 years as a vacation rental. Please see the family history information on our website.

Why Helen Luuwai chose Makena
One of last properties owned by a Hawaiian family and has been passed down through the generations since the late 1870s. There are stunning views of Molokini and Kaho'olawe islands and sometimes Lanai from the property. Our family's roots go back over a hundred years and we operate this vacation rental in order to continue our family's ownership of it and to make it available for local cultural events as well as our visitors from around the world.

Great ocean views
Great location right on the water at Makena Landing plus the best weather on all of Maui. Very private and away from the condo and hotel crowds but you can get to all the action in less than 10 minutes. Great sunsets every night and see the turtles and whales from the patio and lawn. No location like this available for rent in all of Maui. Great place to snorkel as evidenced by all the commercial snorkel boats and kayakers that show up at Makena Landing every day. Helen is great to work with and very responsive to every need. The fact that we come back every year is evidence that we think it's a great place to rent.
Perfect location! Everything you need to just relax and enjoy your holiday
We are two Australian families travelling with teenagers. The location could not be better. Prime snorkeling right off the front lawn. Turtles, turtles, turtles. Lots of living areas for everyone to spread out. Even a jigsaw - our test of a great holiday house. The kitchen has all the little extras that make your stay hassle free. And we were happy to contribute our leftover spices to the stash. On our last day the whales putting on a breaching display, and there were even plenty of binoculars to go around. The whale kayak tour we booked leaves right off the beach a short walk from the house. Really cannot fault our stay. Don’t look any further, if you are looking for a great house on the leeward side of mauii out of the wind and away from the crowds. Yet a short drive to restaurants, food trucks and lava fields. Can’t wait to return.
Better than I can describe
To say this home is perfect is a vast understatement. We were here for a week for our 30th anniversary with our 3 kids plus their significant others. Staying here was a significant part of making the occasion one to remember. The house isn't incredibly fancy, but, really, who wants that at the beach anyway? It's roomy, comfortable and has anything you could possibly want. Each of the bedrooms has an ocean view that looks like it is out of a picture postcard, to say the kitchen is well stocked doesn't give it sufficient credit, the bbq and outdoor eating area are perfectly situated for making and eating meals with and for a large group and the lanai and living room are perfect for just hanging out or playing board games at the end of the day. The house itself is perfectly situated for great snorkeling. No need for an expensive snorkel boat outing--the boats came to the water right in our backyard--and while getting into the water via the rocky beach at the house could be tricky, there's a sand beach literally a 2 minute walk down the road with easy entry and exit. The house is on Maui's pristine south side, but away from the hubbub of all of the resorts, If you're looking for great shops or dining though, it's just a short drive away. Helen was a very responsive host and a pleasure to deal with. If you have a large group and are looking for a place to create lifelong memories, look no further. This is it.
Our keiki had a great time!
Beautiful Setting in Makena
This home has fantastic access to wonderful snorkeling, kayaking, paddle-boarding, etc. and is located close to restaurants, golf courses and first-class resorts. We had to contact Helen (the owner) on our first night regarding the refrigerator; she was very responsive to our concerns. We had a group of 9 and the house had plenty of space for all of us. We grilled several times and enjoyed most of our meals on the spacious back deck gazing at the ocean, just steps away from the house.
