H&G farms is a young farm on it's way to becoming a sustainable organic farm. Many of the current systems are all ready providing multiple sustainable functions, such as solar electricity in the main farm house, ram pump and solar pump systems. Our 3,600ft green house used to jump start and extend the growing season, and permaculture sustainable regenerative principles are being applied and implemented throughout the farm.

Only a 35-45 minute drive from Asheville and nearby many outdoor adventures, although it's safe to say that one could adventure within the 24 acres that the farm is on. Playing in the streams and falls, hiking through the grounds, or fishing in our stocked pond while bird watching and wildlife viewing. Kids and adults alike can get a close view of our farm animals, cows, horses, and chickens throughout the grounds. Dogs are welcomed as long as they are friendly to farm animals and other dogs, and you will certainly be greeted by our farm dogs!

If you are looking to get away and relax in nature, and/or looking to stay near the proximity of city fun, this is the place for you.

We also offer permaculture workshops and customized sustainable education for anyone interested in work exchange living, as well as discount rates on cabins for anyone interested in getting their hands dirty and work in exchange. If you are interested in any type of work exchange or volunteer please keep in mind that it will take up time from vacationing so it's better suited for a long term stay.

Please keep in mind that the farm is available for you to walk through it, observe, and responsibly interact. Occasionally we can do farm tours specially in season and during work hours M-F 9am to 4pm, either way we are always happy to show you how to get around so that you can enjoy the grounds at your own leisure.

Hope that you book your stay and that we will see you soon!

About Max Segovia

The property owners Paul and Valerie Holstein purchased the property in April 2012. They believe and support sustainable living and are very dedicated on doing their own part so that a better ecological balance on earth can be reached. Holstein's farm ultimate goal is to be a sample and educational farm, where one can sit back relax and enjoy the setting, or volunteer and work in exchange for permaculture experience.

Max Segovia purchased this house in 2012

Why Max Segovia chose Smoky Mountains

They searched the entire East Coast of the US for the perfect location to build their retreat. They choose the Asheville area for its mild climate while still having four seasons. They also loved the mountains, pastures, and streams that are found here. They wanted a place where their family, friends, guests and livestock would all be happy, and the incredible biodiversity of North Carolina was on it's own a very convincing fact.

What makes this house unique

This property offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. During foliage, it is an amazing place to see.

The sustainable design being developed on the farm is very interesting to see, while your stay you will be able to witness and imagine the different stages of succession and what it takes to aid with an ecosystem to maximize function, sustainability, while always playing a regenerative role. We support soil and soil supports life.

And if you are just out for privacy and a piece of mind, it is a great peaceful place for that as well.

Perfect Vacation

  • 5 of 5

We truly enjoyed our 2 week getaway to this adorable little cabin. The property was so much fun for our little one. She loved to watch the animals and play in the creek. At night we sat on the porch and enjoyed listening to the babbling brook and fireflies. The property was a bit of a drive for all the hikes we went on (ie Dupont state forest); however, it was a great little place to stay put and enjoy all things to do on the property. We were very impressed with the craftsmanship of the treehouses and all the volunteer tiny homes. We loved meeting Max and his family, including all the furbabies Meadow, Forest, Abby and Stanley:) Overall it was a fantastic summer vacation and we plan on returning for another stay next year.

Charming and remote

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at the mountain cabin. We all loved spending time by the creek and walking around the property. It was so peaceful and relaxing. We were not able to get a wifi connection during our stay, but that allowed us more family time. I would highly recommend a weekend stay here.

Owner's Response: I am very happy that you enjoyed the house and farm, even though our wifi provider had technical difficulties in this whole area for a few days during your stay. It can be frustrating to not have wifi specially up here where only few cell phone carries can get signal. Fortunately enough it does not happen very often, and I am 'mostly glad that the beauty of the mountains was able to keep you fulfilled. Visit back soon!

a magical weekend for the family

  • 5 of 5

The pictures do not do the home or the property justice. Two families with several young kids comfortably spent the weekend in the house and enjoying the grounds. The kids were completely entertained for the entire weekend...and so were the adults! Thank you for sharing your beautiful property with us and for the wonderful memories.

Fantastic

  • 5 of 5

100% agree with all the other positive reviews. This place is great. Relaxing stay, right amenities and amazing views. As others have pointed out, it's a decent drive to anything (~30 mins to Asheville) so plan your days accordingly. We would stay here again in a heartbeat!

This home makes you not want to leave...

  • 4 of 5

The setting for this home is more beautiful than the photos show and it is easy to feel at home. While the farm is extremely well-kept, the home needed some minor improvements. Note that we did not have great luck fishing in the stocked pond, but that may have been due to our early-spring visit. I would easily recommend this home to friends.

Owner's Response: I really enjoyed talking with you, and your kids behaved amazingly. Hopefully next time the fish will be more awake! We did end up shutting the house down from rentals for a week and catching up on the maintenance, come back soon and check it out! Regards, M
