About Janice Cretton
Janice Cretton is a local girl born and raised right on this property. She and her husband Dan have raised their 6 children here too, and they were homeschooled by Janice for 9 years. She has lived most of her life on this property. Dan and Jan are now grandparents, and enjoying their 2 little granddaughters who live on the Big Island. They have a wealth of information to share with you about their precious island. All you have to do is ask. They also would love to fellowship and pray with you, as God leads.
Janice Cretton purchased this House in 1948
Why Janice Cretton chose Haiku
Janice's parents purchased this property in 1948 when she was just 6 months old. She and her 3 brothers and sisters were raised here, and there were many precious memories created here. Then Dan and Jan and their 6 children also lived on this property to create even more wonderful memories. This will always be home to their children, and hopefully, home to their grandchildren as well.
What makes this House unique
After our 6 children were grown and on their own, we decided it was time to build a new home. The termites were tired of holding hands to hold our old home up!! So 2 years ago, we decided to not feed anymore termites by building a termite-proof bamboo home! We love the idea that it is 'green' and eco-friendly, and at the same time, warm and inviting. The woven bamboo walls and high bamboo-studded ceiling create a tropical island atmosphere that is unique and relaxing. We invite you to come and enjoy our home with us on your visit to Maui!

Very peaceful...except for the chickens
The cottage was wonderfully decorated and very comfortable. It had everything I needed to spend a couple quiet nights on the island before joining up with a retreat. I would recommend bringing ear plugs with you as many wild chickens in the area begin crowing around 3AM and sometimes you hear them throughout the day. I will say that the check-in process was a little disorganized because Janice was dealing with some things beyond her control during my stay. This made checking in and getting any questions answered rather difficult as I never did get to meet her in person. I highly doubt this is normal for her because when we did chat via phone she was always very helpful. I would stay again but would definitely prepare a little differently next time.
Hi Shane! I am so sorry for the roosters crowing, the confusion on your arrival, and especially for not meeting you! My dad was admitted into the hospital for a few days, and my mom who’s 95 really needed help, so it was hard to get away to meet you! I had a lei and gifts for you on your last day, and made sure I was home much earlier than the checkout time you told me, but you were already gone. Thank you sooo much for your lovely Missouri cake mix gift, Shane! That was so sweet of you!! I am working on the chicken problem as those wild chickens are multiplying quickly! Yes, there are earplugs in the room now! Hope you had a wonderful Maui vacation, Shane! Mahalo & God bless you! Janice
Exceptional Hospitality and wonderful eco-friendly accommodation in upcountry Haiku
Our stay in Bamboo Heaven made for a perfect start for our much anticipated Hawaiian vacation. We spent 4-nights in this amazingly peaceful eco-friendly bamboo home. Janice, the home owner, is such a caring host and made us feel so welcomed in her house. She has put in a lot of thought to the wants and needs of the visitors to the island and the room (Green Room) that we stayed in had every thing we needed while vacationing in Maui. The place is about 5 minutes drive from the famous Hookipa Beach, very conveniently located for doing the sunrise tour in Haleakala, the road trip to Hana or venturing the places in upcountry Maui or anywhere in Maui. Both the front and the back yards of the beautiful bamboo house are surrounded by many tropical fruit trees which reminded us of our home town in India. Janice stocked the fridge with plenty of breakfast items like bread, eggs, sausages, pancake mix, jam, butter, milk, honey, oatmeal, including fresh fruits from her garden which we used to make breakfast every morning. We sat in the private lanai in front of the room to enjoy our self-cooked breakfast each morning while enjoying the lovely view of the ocean in the distance. Janice lives in the property and is just a knock away if any help is needed and she is ever ready to help. We had a little inconvenience with the toilet flush but as homeowners ourselves we know that these things can happen and we handled it. Also, on the last day when we we were about to leave for the airport to catch our flight to Hilo, we saw that our rental car had leaked some kind of a fluid (may be transmission fluid) on the car port. We were kind of unsure if we could drive safely to the airport or if we would be able to make it there on time for the flight. So we told Janice that we would call her if we get stuck on the way. Janice was ever ready to help so early in the morning. Although we did not get stuck on the road, Janice called us several times to make sure that our drive was going good and that we reached the airport safely. We really appreciated her genuineness and her caring nature. It is these personal traits of hers that made our stay in Maui so memorable. It felt like staying at a home away from home rather than a commercial establishment. I would definitely recommend this accommodation to our friends and family.
Thank you Janice for all your help, prayers and the wonderful gifts of chocolates, calendar and the book of scriptures. God bless you!
Wow Jayeeta! What a lovely review you wrote!! Thank you sooo much!! It was such a joy to meet you and your beautiful family during your Maui vacation! I'm so thankful that you chose to stay with me, so we could meet and get to know each other! Thank you for being such wonderful guests who were so easy to please! I love Pranjal!! Did I get his name right this time?? He's so sweet!! Guess what? I fixed the toilet!! I simply exchanged the tube with my toilet, and ta da!! It's fixed! And for some reason, my toilet is working fine with the broken piece so far!! Thank you Jesus!! Thank you so much for your sweet little God Bless You dragonfly charm for my 70th birthday!! I'll always think of you when I see it!
Until we meet again, may God bless and keep you and yours!! Jesus loves you!!! Janice
More than we expected
Our stay at Bamboo Heaven was perfect for this trip to Maui. We needed down time in a quiet, clean, relaxed space - and this is exactly what we received. No TV, no phones, quiet neighbors, and upcountry hens and mist made our stay very calm. Thanks for the beautiful stay - we will definitely try to come back, if we need another decompression getaway!
Amazing time - wonderful hostess
We had such a great time in Haiku. Such a beautiful property - sitting on the patio between visits to the beach was the perfect down time. Aunt Janice is the best! Couldn't ask for more - fresh fruit from her yard - and she is such a great person and conversation - she knows it all.
We loved it!
Enjoyed Janice-a beautiful soul. Our stay was really quick. Hope to visit another time.
Great place, Janice was a great hostess !
Janice made us feel like at home.
Her bamboo heaven was very cozy and interesting. We definitely would recommend it without reservations !
We are located 7 min. away from Hookipa Beach Park, the windsurfing capital of the world, and famous surf and kite-surfing spot. You will experience a real treat by driving there for the beautiful sunset, and watching about 30 turtles swimming to shore to rest!! About 10 minutes in the other direction is Jaws, known for its huge waves that surfers tackle with the aid of jet skis. Also in this area is Twins Falls, where you can hike to waterfalls, and cool off in the refreshing pools. Haiku is also the home of Haleakala Bike Company, who takes you up to the volcano for sunrise, then allows you to bike down the mountain back to Haiku on your own.
A popular activity here is to watch the sunrise over Haleakala Crater. This is a good location to do that from. It is about a 1 1/2 hr. drive up to the crater, but allow 2 hours for traffic. So you will be setting your alarm to wake up about 3:30 am! A new rule has just been enforced, and you need to make a reservation ahead of time to see the sunrise! Only 150 cars are allowed in now, and it is already booked up!
There is also Northshore Ziplines for an exciting adventure through the tropical forests of Haiku. A local bus line is only a few minutes away that will take you downtown for a couple dollars, if you are tired of driving. All the other towns on Maui are within an hour's drive away from our rental, except for Hana, which is more than a 2-hour dive. We are in the heart of Haiku town within walking distance to restaurants and businesses, but on a private almost 2-acre property that feels like you are away from all the hustle and bustle of life. You will enjoy this relaxing quiet atmosphere after a day at the beach or sightseeing. This tropical island refuge amidst God's beautiful creation will fill you with peace, love, joy, and strength for your next adventure on Maui!
When you stay at Bamboo Heaven Maui, you will be gifted with more than just a beautiful room! You will feel the aloha spirit here, and if you like, I offer you to experience some Hawaiian activities like a Hawaiian photo shoot, learn to dance the hula, open a coconut (if available), taste some sugar cane, & maybe even cut down a banana tree and harvest some bananas!! Of course, only if you choose to do it! If you prefer privacy, just let me know, and I will not be too friendly! I will always be available if you need anything or have any questions! Mahalo!
