About Janice Cretton

Janice Cretton is a local girl born and raised right on this property. She and her husband Dan have raised their 6 children here too, and they were homeschooled by Janice for 9 years. She has lived most of her life on this property.

Dan and Jan are now grandparents, and enjoying their 2 little granddaughters who live on the Big Island.

They have a wealth of information to share with you about their precious island. All you have to do is ask. They also would love to fellowship and pray with you, as God leads.

Janice Cretton purchased this house in 1948

Why Janice Cretton chose East Maui

Janice's parents purchased this property in 1948 when she was just 6 months old. She and her 3 brothers and sisters were raised here, and there were many precious memories created here. Then Dan and Jan and their 6 children also lived on this property to create even more wonderful memories. This will always be home to their children, and hopefully, home to their grandchildren as well.

What makes this house unique

After our 6 children were grown and on their own, we decided it was time to build a new home. The termites were tired of holding hands to hold our old home up!! So 2 years ago, we decided to not feed anymore termites by building a termite-proof bamboo home! We love the idea that it is 'green' and eco-friendly, and at the same time, warm and inviting. The woven bamboo walls and high bamboo-studded ceiling create a tropical island atmosphere that is unique and relaxing. We invite you to come and enjoy our home with us on your visit to Maui!

Guestbook comments from the owner

When I think of Maui, I think of peace, love, and hospitality. This describes this place perfectly. Aunty Janice, as our son Parker would call her, thought of everything from the thoughtfully thought-out food selection to the flip flops in all our sizes, laid out to use if needed. Every little detail was carefully done for our family to have delightful time. Our son enjoyed being taught how to open a fresh coconut and sugar

cane, then was able to eat it. I would highly recommend staying here and relaxing in this bamboo heaven. May God continue to bless Auntie Janice and hope our paths cross again! Mahalo!

Great accommodation but.....

  • 3 of 5

This place is really great. The owner Janice is very generous with her supplies and other nice little gifts but herein lies the problem. I value my privacy while I'm on vacation. I pay for a place to stay and expect privacy during my stay. The owner kept popping up unexpectedly with good intentions but this vacationer did not appreciate having these unexpected visits. Worse yet, she seemed bent on saving me from my sins and finding the Lord. I don't oppose or support her beliefs but I'm so not in that ballpark of beliefs.

So despite the wonderful accommodation, with a view of the ocean in the distance and the beauty of Hawaii all around, the stay was tainted by a little too many friendly visits by the owner.

It bothers me to have to write a review like this because Janice is such a great person. But I feel I should say something about the Christian zeal I experienced and did not really appreciate. I think that if you just firmly tell her you want your privacy, I'm sure she will respect that. And if that was so, this is one of the best places I stayed at during my time in Maui.

Owner's Response: Hi Francis, Thank you so much for choosing to stay with me, and for your honest review. I am so sorry to hear that I was not respecting your privacy. If I had known, of course I would have been careful not to disturb you. I wish you had told me honestly then as you have in your review, so there would be no hard feelings now. I didn't get any signs at the time that you were bothered by my presence, but I will be more sensitive to my guests in the future. Again, thank you for choosing Bamboo Heaven Maui, and I was glad to hear that you thought it was one of the best places you've stayed on Maui! Aloha & God bless you Francis! Janice

Short and sweet stay

  • 5 of 5

The suite and property were absolutely beautiful. Janice really pays attention to detail in regards to the amenities available to us to use in the room. She had set up a make shift crib/bed for our baby to sleep on safely. There was booster seat ready for her as well. We thought this was all very considerate. She left some treats in the fridge; some homemade banana bread (which was amazing!), eggs, waffles, local drinks, cocoa, tea, coffee, fruits and portugese sausage and rice; a local favorite for breakfast. I like that she uses all natural cleaners and left an all natural bug spray, in case we needed it. She had a compost available, which we thought was excellent.

The only problem we had, was some difficulties in booking the room. She has multiple rooms, listed on multiple sites and there was some confusion there and we ended up booking the same day as arrival, after weeks of communication, which was very stressful for me. Not sure if it was on her end, or if it was the site but we sorted it out after a few phone calls and a call to the VRBO assistance.

Janice is a genuinely sweet woman that has a passion in sharing her culture and home with her guests. She shared some of the history of the property with us as well as some basics on the pronunciation of the Hawaiian language. We had the opportunity to open and sample a coconut and sugar cane from the land, with a machete with her. She also taught us how to hula and had us dress up in grass skirts, coconuts, leis and Hawaiian tees as an opportunity for all of us to have the memories documented. It was fun. We just wished we had known how long it was going to take, as it prolonged our departure to head out on our journey to begin the road to Hana. Make sure if you do partake, you carve out some time and wear sunscreen! We were outside and I got sunburned!

All in all, we had a great stay. Unfortunately, we arrived late and then left late the next day so our time was short....but sweet. We only wished we had stayed for longer. We left as though we were leaving a family members house, armed with hugs, prayers (she is very open about sharing her faith) and gifts nonetheless! We recommend staying more than one night! Enjoy!

A unique and very personal Maui experience

  • 5 of 5

We spent our last two nights on Maui at Bamboo Heaven, and we could not have picked a better spot.

Situated in an idyllic garden, Bamboo heaven is not only a beautiful place to relax, but also an ideal starting point to explore Maui’s Northern coast and the Road to Hana.

The homely bamboo house was equipped with everything we could have asked for - from a well-stocked fridge to fresh homegrown fruits and lots of breakfast ingredients.

What makes this place real special is its owner Janice - who is such a gracious, helpful and kind person and the perfect host. She took her time to point out many points of interest and places to explore and provided us with a lot of helpful tips. If you wish, Janice introduces you to the Hula and lets you sample coconut and sugar cane, both grown on her property. We had a lot of fun doing so and really enjoyed ourselves. Janice even made leis (the Hawaiian floral wreaths) for us upon our departure - a very kind gesture and a beautiful souvenir.

To cut a long story short: The stay at Bamboo Heaven made our last days on the island something very special, and we can’t thank Janice enough for her hospitality. We would definitely recommend this B&B - you won’t be disappointed if you are looking for a quiet, beautiful place to stay and a very unique, personal Maui experience.

Experience was great. Sleeping with the windows open and falling asleep to the sound of rain was amazing! Everything we needed for breakfast was there. Bed comfy, shower spacious and clean. Would definitely stay here again if I get to come back to Maui. Janice was very sweet and hospitable!

Great private place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay for 3 nights. Janice has all the local scoop on the important stuff. Food and beach are both close. Easy parking for your car. Property feels private - view of the ocean and farm animals. Would not hesitate to go back.

Car: recommended

We are located 7 min. away from Hookipa Beach Park, the windsurfing capital of the world, and famous surf and kite-surfing spot. You will experience a real treat by driving there for the beautiful sunset, and watching about 30 turtles swimming to shore to rest!! About 10 minutes in the other direction is Jaws, known for its huge waves that surfers tackle with the aid of jet skis. Also in this area is Twins Falls, where you can hike to waterfalls, and cool off in the refreshing pools. Haiku is also the home of Haleakala Bike Company, who takes you up to the volcano for sunrise, then allows you to bike down the mountain back to Haiku on your own.

A popular activity here is to watch the sunrise over Haleakala Crater. This is a good location to do that from. It is about a 1 1/2 hr. drive up to the crater, but allow 2 hours for traffic. So you will be setting your alarm to wake up about 3:30 am! A new rule has just been enforced, and you need to make a reservation ahead of time to see the sunrise! Only 150 cars are allowed in now, and it is already booked up!

There is also Northshore Ziplines for an exciting adventure through the tropical forests of Haiku. A local bus line is only a few minutes away that will take you downtown for a couple dollars, if you are tired of driving. All the other towns on Maui are within an hour's drive away from our rental, except for Hana, which is more than a 2-hour dive. We are in the heart of Haiku town within walking distance to restaurants and businesses, but on a private almost 2-acre property that feels like you are away from all the hustle and bustle of life. You will enjoy this relaxing quiet atmosphere after a day at the beach or sightseeing. This tropical island refuge amidst God's beautiful creation will fill you with peace, love, joy, and strength for your next adventure on Maui!

When you stay at Bamboo Heaven Maui, you will be gifted with more than just a beautiful room! You will feel the aloha spirit here, and if you like, I offer you to experience some Hawaiian activities like a Hawaiian photo shoot, learn to dance the hula, open a coconut (if available), taste some sugar cane, & maybe even cut down a banana tree and harvest some bananas!! Of course, only if you choose to do it! If you prefer privacy, just let me know, and I will not be too friendly! I will always be available if you need anything or have any questions! Mahalo!
