About the property

Away from it all, yet close to Russian River, Sonoma Coast and Wine Tasting

Imagine watching wildlife from every room of the house! The Knot Hole is a retreat unto itself, featuring 2 bedrooms and 2 baths. The home is nestled against a fern laden hillside and surrounded by a tall privacy fence. Enjoy life among the towering redwoods, just yards away from your own access to the crystal clear waters of East Austin Creek. Glimpse otters as they swim upstream or watch the salmon spawn! This year-round creek is home to a plethora of wildlife, including giant blue heron, egrets, wild turkeys, otters and deer.

The Knot Hole offers a serene, visually rich multi-level environment with abundant windows, glass French doors, 3 separate decks and a hot tub.

Outside, you'll find multiple decks and sitting areas on the property. The lower deck features an outdoor sunken claw foot bathtub. The hot tub sits on its own private deck and is shaded by an umbrella (imagine soaking in the hot tub even in the misty rain). The middle deck features an outdoor dining set with views of the Austin Creek. The rooftop deck offers comfortable outdoor furniture, also with spectacular views of the creek. Besides these sitting areas, The Knot Hole also offers 2 more sitting areas alongside the creek. A swimming hole is located about 100 feet down the road.

Inside this home, Persian rugs complement the 100-year-old knotty pine floors that grace the main living areas. Enjoy your morning coffee at the living room table while you watch hummingbirds flash their iridescent colors. Or enjoy the morning from the privacy of the hot tub while you listen to the waters of East Austin Creek. The fully equipped gourmet kitchen offers granite counters and stainless steel appliances. The comfortable furnishings and ambiance assure a relaxing stay. The master bedroom is equipped with a writing nook, antique wood stove, picture window, down comforters and down pillows. The master bathroom also features mosaics and multiple windows that allow you to view the birds and ferns on the hillside even while showering. The comfortable cozy furnishings, antiques and ambiance assure a relaxing stay. The second bedroom and second mosaic-tiled bathroom are accessible by an exterior entrance.

This piece of paradise is also dog friendly, as it's fully fenced and allows lots of safe areas to relax with your dog. (Please note that the steep hillside behind the house is not fenced, but only the most skilled canine climbers can get out.)

Have kids who want to explore creeks, catch frogs and splash in puddles? You can find it all at The Knot Hole, for your kids or for your inner child.

Close to the ocean, wineries, golf and Guerneville, The Knot Hole provides the perfect base camp to enjoy your vacation. According to previous guests, it's just what the doctor ordered!

About Russian River Vacation Homes

We are Russian River Vacation Homes, a part of D&G Equity Management, Inc., a family owned and locally owned/operated property management company.

Our Story:

In 1980, D&G founders and owners Michael and Patty saw a need in the area for habitable, affordable housing. At that time, many of the little cabins along the Russian River, originally built as summer cabins, were unsuitable for year-round occupancy. D&G assisted property owners with fixing up and renting their cabins. As the largest property management company in western Sonoma County, D&G Equity Management continues to be a staple in the Russian River community.

Russian River Vacation Homes is an off-shoot of D&G. One fine day in 1985, Michael's client, Bob, asked "Hey Mike, can you rent my cabin out just for the week or weekend instead of by the month?" Michael said "Sure!" and Russian River Vacation Homes was born. As renting vacation rentals became more popular, Russian River Vacation Homes grew into a full-time business with its own office. Today, Russian River Vacation Homes professionally manages over 60 high-quality vacation rentals.

We strive to make each and every stay the best one ever. If you have any questions or concerns about reserving or staying with us, please don't hesitate to contact us! We are here to help.

Why Russian River Vacation Homes chose Sonoma County

Cazadero is 12 miles to the Sonoma coast, 12 miles to Guerneville, 9 miles to Monte Rio, 7 miles to Duncan’s Mills and a short drive to Russian River Valley wineries. Cazadero has an old fashioned country store and a coffee shop. Duncan's Mills, Guerneville, and Monte Rio have a number of great restaurants. Duncan's Mills has a number of boutique shops. Monte Rio has a public beach with boat rentals (June-September), a movie theater and a small store.

Relaxing creekside setting: a good summertime getaway

  • 3 of 5

The Knot Hole: the location of this cabin is optimal: on a creek, not far from the busy Bay Area, and in the thick of firs, redwoods, and nature's calm.

The house is quirky and smaller than we thought, not exactly like the photos. Lamps throughout help with lighting. The sofa bed --as a sofa-- is the very most uncomfortable seat for anyone or anything. We guessed it was ~30 years old: rock hard, dead cushions. The wood plank floor was more comfortable.

Screen doors and screened windows (esp in upstairs BR) would help for optimal aeration and (summer) early morning and late afternoon/evening enjoyment. Otherwise, with open doors, it's a mosquito haven. During our stay, the daily breezes were perfect, but we had to shut all doors & windows for insect control; to a small degree, this limited the in-house, summertime moments.

However, for these mid-summer days, the creek, just a few steps & down a pathway across the road, makes this place optimal.

We spent our days alongside the water in the sun as well as under the deciduous & evergreen trees' and umbrella's shade. The chairs, table, chaise loungers, and umbrellas were perfect.

We walked in the babbling water up and downstream to some deeper watering holes for plunges. It was fun to see tiny trout (or salmon?) swimming about, and also one crawdad before he hid under a submerged log. The dogs and humans loved the options!

At night, it was perfectly quiet even preceding, during, and following the 4th of July. The dogs' anxiety, and subsequent human anxiousness disappeared.

We spent most of our time (4 adults) outside: morning coffee on the upper tiny deck -- holds table, 4 chairs, umbrella & a few potted plants-- and, as mentioned, creek side.

There is another, much larger deck off the upper bedroom which is accessed only through this BR. However, the door was padlocked and a sign hung overhead: "Closed For The Season." We were a bit disappointed since this one was under full sun. Perhaps there was damage from the 2016-2017 rainy weather? I would've preferred that sign.

The house is close enough to 'civilization ' and amenities: Guerneville is 25-35 mins away, Duncans Mills (pub food, shops, PO,...) was 10-15.

We returned home very relaxed and look forward to another summer stay there.

Tranquility and peace creekside

  • 3 of 5

My husband and I along with the grandparents and two grandkids (4 & 3 yrs) stayed at this lovely home. I don't want to give the wrong impression that the stay wasn't fabulous, it was. Just had minor inconveniences/annoyances. We initially had an incident - one child falling off stairs. Maybe I didn't read the description correctly, but everywhere it was a maze of stairs. The oven is broken - only low temp was working. Someone did write a note that a part was on it's way, but their wasn't a date...so who knows how long it was on order. Just wish someone told us sooner so I didn't buy baking supplies/food specifically for oven. The pull out couch was a mess. The cushions were sunken and old and no one wanted to sit on it because it was quite uncomfortable.

Washer and dryer work, but I think there was sort of leakage happening at the base because the ground was wet when leaving the washer/dryer room.

Overall, we had a great experience making memories as a family and that I am thankful for. We definitely wouldn't mind staying again if a few items were replaced/fixed. Thank you for sharing your home with us and I hope I didn't come off as negative, just felt like someone should know to fix the items to make it a perfect stay.

A whimsical little respite from the real world.

  • 5 of 5

Stayed at The Knot Hole while attending the wedding of some friends in Cazadero. Our party was us + our 2 year old along with another couple and their small dog. At first the house seemed a bit smaller than it looked in the pictures, but once we settled in we found that that didn't matter at all, and that, in fact, everything was in wonderful proportion. Our friends (and their dog) stayed in the upstairs room and we all commented about how the setup provided the perfect amount of privacy. Beds and sheets were extremely comfortable and the kitchen had everything we needed to prepare breakfast and dinner with supplies we bought in Guerneville. Despite the fact that temps outside were in the 80's-90's, it was cool and breezy in the house thanks to the copious amount of trees. My favorite parts of the house: the giant window in the downstairs bedroom that looks out on the hillside. It was like waking up in a terrarium. Also loved all the little touches, from the elevate outside dining area to bathtub sunk into the deck. We will definitely be back.

The perfect cozy winter getaway

  • 5 of 5

It was cold outside during our stay, so the coziness of the space matched the weather and season perfectly. We cooked, soaked, napped and played along the creek. One of my favorite moments was slipping away to read quietly in the upstairs room where it feels like you're in a treehouse. The house is truly charming and we had a really lovely time. This is not so much a problem with the house but more a heads up to folks who with limited ability: My mother who was with us has Parkinson's and found it a bit challenging to get up and down the tall steps leading to the house, and the steps leading to the upstairs room. And because during this time of year the sun doesn't touch the ground often, the steps and deck could be slippery. Again, not criticizing, just wanting to provide info for folks in a similar situation.

Pictures don't do this place justice. It was the perfect place.

  • 5 of 5

This place was an absolute gem. Bedding was inviting and comfortable, setting extremely quiet and lush. Felt like a hobbit in a remote forest setting. Spent a lot of time relaxing by the creek and all of our dinners were prepared and eaten onsite. The cutest bakery with superb pastries was less than a mile away in Cazadero and Guernville and Jenner were both 20 minutes away with a beautiful ride in the redwoods to boot. When we come back to the Russian River valley, we will be staying there again.

Wonderful, Relaxing Location

  • 5 of 5

Really enjoyed my time with my family at the Knot Hole. The cabin is very well appointed and located on a quiet street in Cazadero amongst the redwoods. The location is between Sebastapol and Bodega Bay / Jenner area. Plenty of great wineries in the Russian River area, including Joseph Phelps (awesome cabs), Gary Farrell (pinots, chardonnay), and Iron Horse (sparkling wines of all kinds). Fantastic seafood and coastal views in Bodega Bay, and two great breakfast places in Jenner (Cafe Aquatica) and closer to the cabin in Cazadero (weekends only). Some interesting Unabomber / Deliverance ambiance as you walk further up the road away from the bridge ....
