About the property

3 Baths! WiFi! Canoe/Fish 5 Lakes! Nonsmoking! One-Level! Housekeeping Included

Hike, Bike, Golf, Run, Swim or Simply Retreat at 'Castellaw' at Sherwood Forest at Cedar Mountain near Brevard, Pisgah National Forest, the Blue Ridge Parkway, DuPont State Forest, and Caesar's Head State Park. We named our home 'Castellaw' because it's one of our family's ancestral names that is Scottish for "castle hill," an apt name for a home that is on one level but is perched high on a hilltop among the trees, with an almost 180 degree view most seasons. We are uniquely surrounded by "green space," so the house is very private yet conveniently located within Sherwood Forest and just a half block's walk to beautiful Trout Lake, with a sandy beach and dock for fishing, swimming, and even access to a community canoe!

From the expansive deck or with the screened doors and windows open, you'll be immersed in the sounds of nature, including the rushing stream in the woods below. Linger over coffee and breakfast on the deck, or enjoy the starry night sky after a sunset dinner cooked on the new gas grill or in the beautifully appointed granite kitchen with a locally-crafted black walnut table and benches. Or, you might rather dine at the antique DR table, served from the Hepplewhite sideboard. Two more antique tables near the TV expand your table options or make great game tables.

Another room from which to enjoy the deck and outside world is the master bedroom with queen rice bed and a desk/sitting area. The private adjoining master bath has been updated with a travertine marble shower and toilet in one room, separated from the granite lavatory and dressing area, with closets to hide your suitcases...You might not wish to ever find them to go home!

The guest bedroom has an antique pine with pineapple-post queen bed, an adjoining bath with tub/shower combo, and room for extra bed options stored in the closet (roll-away twin bed, queen air mattress, Graco pack-n-play, and 2 canvas camping cots (our kids' favorites)). A toddler "car" bed is stored in the garage (mattress in guest bedroom closet).

There are now twin maple pineapple-post beds as well as a futon in the den, which essentially makes it bedroom #3. The living room sofa, although not a hideaway bed, makes a comfy bedding option as well (it's our grandmothers' first choice!). The third full bathroom near the kitchen and living room is perfect for extra guests.

We have high-speed internet to keep you in touch with the world (if you must...), 2 tvs with a variety of stations, and a dvd/vcr player for "movie nights." For cold winter nights, there is the central heat pump as well as the large-capacity gas logs, or you may wish to plug in the electric blankets. It's rarely warm enough for air conditioning, but we do have central a/c as well.

Fill your days with simple pleasures of strolling a half block to Trout Lake to sit and read in tranquility, swim, or fish (adults must have proper licenses). We'll even link you to receive an access code for use of a community canoe (use our paddles stored in our garage). Or, put on your hiking or running shoes for over 22 miles of private trails (not counting all those less than 10 minutes away at DuPont State Forest or Caesar's Head State Forest!). You'll have access to Sherwood Forest's heated pool (seasonal) and upgraded tennis courts; the lovely 18-hole par-3 golf course is also available (very reasonable greens fees). There's so much from which to choose within the forest itself, but should you want to venture out, you're less than 15 minutes from Brevard (shops, restaurants, music and arts center), DuPont State Forest (waterfalls in the 'Hunger Games' movie), and Caesar's Head (SC) State Park. Another 15-30 minutes beyond Brevard will take you to Sliding Rock, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Asheville, and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Glorious location for children. Garage doubles as rainy-day playroom + den is separate from LR. Great place to ride bikes, play in the woods, hike the trails, half-block walk to Trout Lake (fishing license required for adults). Pool and tennis short bike or car ride away. We'll give you a key for access. Golf course perfect for kids and adults (18 holes all par-3).

So much at your fingertips and toes! Let us share 'Castellaw' at Sherwood Forest with you!

About Vicki and Craig Wilkes

We live in South Carolina, less than 3 hours from Castellaw at Sherwood Forest. We have been blessed with two children after marrying in our 40's. Needless to say we put a high priority on meaningful family-time as well as their connection with their grandparents, uncles and aunts, and cousins. We want Castellaw to be a retreat for our family and yours. Today's world is too frenetic. It's time for restoration in the fresh mountain air and to enjoy simple joys and pleasures!

Vicki and Craig Wilkes purchased this house in 2012

Why Vicki and Craig Wilkes chose Brevard

We chose this house and Sherwood Forest itself because of its convenient location near Brevard, and the fact that it is in excellent condition, is an easy half-block walk to Trout Lake, is in the woods above the rushing stream leaving the lake, and has such a wonderful deck with covered eating area.

The Western NC mountains were a part of each of our childhoods, and we wanted such for our children. Truly 'the land of the waterfalls'! So many things to do and see! It brings back such good memories from childhood visiting grandparents, camp...Sliding Rock and the Blue Ridge! Seeing our young children gleefully jumping off the dock at Trout Lake into its cold clear water or grabbing a canoe...half a block from the house...that's what sold us on this house. Also, our house is rather uniquely surrounded by 'green space' of Sherwood Forest, so we're ensconced in our own little world on top of the hill. Wonderful neighbors are close enough to meet on a walk, but not within sight when on the deck or looking out the windows. Besides Trout Lake and 4 other lakes, the pool, tennis courts and golf course are a quick bike ride, good walk, or short car ride away. There is always something to do or the peace to not do anything.

What makes this house unique

Castellaw is a one-level updated home with hardwood and tile floors incredibly located near SO much to see, feel, and breathe. Room for large or extended family without being overwhelming. No dank basement with which to contend! Double garage with ramp into house to roll suitcases without steps (just 2 anyway at front door). Larger laundry room and nicer kitchen than we have 'at home.' Comfortably appointed, yet livable. A fun house! The stars from the deck at night - January or July - just awesome!

Use these where most convenient for your group. Also, our grandmothers actually prefer the LR sofa (not a hide-away) for their bed. This gives them first dibs on the coffee in the morning!

great place

  • 5 of 5

Everything was beautiful, clean, serene and exactly as described. The owner went out of her way to respond quickly when we had a question about the internet, even though she was on vacation herself in a national park. Easy to get to, convenient and a really beautiful place to park our bodies after full days of activities. Highly recommended.

Owner's Response: We appreciate the kind words, including your appreciation of the easy access and convenience of the location and the cleanliness (our housekeeper is MUCH appreciated!), and that as guests you were so pleasant and accommodating to help resolve the "technical difficulties" (and it was a month-old router!). I do try to respond as quickly as possible because it is a house, not a hotel with a maintenance staff down the hall! Guests like you make renting our mountain retreat a joy...and we love sharing it. We had a lovely visit with extended family (at a VRBO house!) experiencing the Grand Canyon, Zion, and Bryce National Parks, but you know...the Pisgah and Great Smokeys' National Parks near our house are something special, too! Please come again!

Lovely home

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay in Castellaw. The home is beautiful, clean and offers plenty of space. The deck was our favorite spot and the sunrises there were wonderful. The location is private and full of trails to explore. We loved how close we were to DuPont and Main Street in Brevard. This home has it all and we hope to return soon.

Owner's Response: Shelley, many thanks for your thoughtful and complimentary words! So glad you mentioned the deck as the next week we ourselves enjoyed the full moon as it bathed the deck in a magical bluish hue. So, sunrise or late night, it's an incredible place for a cup of coffee or a backrub to help my 15-year old go to sleep. As for the great condition of the house, kudos go to our wonderful housekeeper, Lorie, who ably picked up the reins from her mother-in-law Debbie (our longtime housekeeper a lot of guests knew who passed away with cancer in a matter of weeks last fall). We always share with Lorie (and Debbie before), such kind words as yours. Your other comment about our private yet close-to-so-much location is helpful to future guests. Being halfway in between DuPont (or Caesar's Head) and Brevard is why we chose Sherwood Forest. Another is our little golf course with the llama-caddies (we snuggled with them for photos as they got dressed for "work" last Saturday)! Look forward to sharing our "Forest" home with you again soon! Vicki and Craig

Owner's Response: Thanks for these nice words, and a "first trip to the mountains" was quite momentous to be your 14-year old's birthday wish! Proud we were the invisible hosts for the family celebration! Hope to hear from you for another visit!

Couldn't ask for more! The home is awesome and the perfect setting for a get away to the mountains. Everything you need is provided. The owners did everything to make sure all was perfect. Great communicators and always available for any questions. The kitchen is well stocked with extra dishes, cooking pans, utensils, etc. We will certainly be back! I hate to brag too much because I don't want it to always be rented when we're ready for our get-away!

Owner's Response: Many thanks for your expressions and impressions of our "Castellaw at Sherwood Forest" home! I clearly remember your first call to me back early spring, when you said you wanted a place for your active family, including two grown sons living elsewhere, and that your previous vacation places just hadn't "fit." I felt then that our home would be a great fit for your family, and I'm so happy it indeed became such a special family gathering. We certainly look forward to having you again, summer or other season! Vicki
