Hike, Bike, Golf, Run, Swim or Simply Retreat at 'Castellaw' at Sherwood Forest at Cedar Mountain near Brevard, DuPont State Forest, and Caesar's Head. We named our home 'Castellaw' because it's one of our family's ancestral names that is Scottish for "castle hill," an apt name for a home that is on one level but is perched high on a hilltop among the trees, with an almost 180 degree view most seasons. We are uniquely surrounded by "green space," so the house is very private yet conveniently located within Sherwood Forest and just a half block's walk to beautiful Trout Lake, with a sandy beach and dock for fishing, swimming, and even access to a community canoe!
From the expansive deck or with the screened doors and windows open, you'll be immersed in the sounds of nature, including the rushing stream in the woods below. Linger over coffee and breakfast on the deck, or enjoy the starry night sky after a sunset dinner cooked on the new gas grill or in the beautifully appointed granite kitchen with a locally-crafted black walnut table and benches. Or, you might rather dine at the antique DR table, served from the Hepplewhite sideboard. A second antique pub table from Great Britain expands your table options or makes a great game table.
Another room from which to enjoy the deck and outside world is the master bedroom with queen rice bed and a desk/sitting area. The private adjoining master bath has been updated with a travertine shower and toilet in one room, separated from the granite lavatory and dressing area, with closets to hide your suitcases...You might not wish to ever find them to go home!
The guest bedroom has antique maple pineapple-post twin beds, an adjoining bath with tub/shower combo, and extra bed options stored in the closet (roll-away twin bed, toddler pack-n-play, and 2 canvas camping cots (our kids' favorites)).
There is even a queen futon in the den, which essentially makes it bedroom #3. The living room sofa, although not a hideaway bed, makes a comfy bedding option as well (it's our grandmothers' first choice!). The third full bathroom near the kitchen and living room is perfect for extra guests.
We have the internet to keep you in touch with the world (if you must...), 2 tvs with a variety of stations, and a dvd/vcr player for "movie nights." For cold winter nights, there is the central heat pump as well as the large-capacity gas logs, or you may wish to plug in the electric blankets. It's rarely warm enough for air conditioning, but we do have central a/c as well.
Fill your days with simple pleasures of strolling a half block to Trout Lake to sit and read in tranquility, swim, or fish (adults must have proper licenses). We'll even link you to receive an access code for use of a community canoe (use our paddles stored in our garage). Or, put on your hiking or running shoes for over 22 miles of private trails (not counting all those less than 10 minutes away at DuPont State Forest or Caesar's Head State Forest!). You'll have access to Sherwood Forest's heated pool (seasonal) and upgraded tennis courts; the lovely 18-hole par-3 golf course is also available (very reasonable greens fees). There's so much from which to choose within the forest itself, but should you want to venture out, you're less than 15 minutes from Brevard (shops, restaurants, music and arts center), DuPont State Forest (waterfalls in the 'Hunger Games' movie), and Caesar's Head (SC) State Park. Another 15-30 minutes beyond Brevard will take you to Sliding Rock, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Asheville, and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
So much at your fingertips and toes! Let us share 'Castellaw' at Sherwood Forest with you!
We live in South Carolina, less than 3 hours from Castellaw at Sherwood Forest. We have been blessed with two children after marrying in our 40's. Needless to say we put a high priority on meaningful family-time as well as their connection with their grandparents, uncles and aunts, and cousins. We want Castellaw to be a retreat for our family and yours. Today's world is too frenetic. It's time for restoration in the fresh mountain air and to enjoy simple joys and pleasures!
Vicki and Craig Wilkes purchased this house in 2012
We chose this house and Sherwood Forest itself because of its convenient location near Brevard, and the fact that it is in excellent condition, is an easy half-block walk to Trout Lake, is in the woods above the rushing stream leaving the lake, and has such a wonderful deck with covered eating area.
The Western NC mountains were a part of each of our childhoods, and we wanted such for our children. Truly 'the land of the waterfalls'! So many things to do and see! It brings back such good memories from childhood visiting grandparents, camp...Sliding Rock and the Blue Ridge Parkway...wow! Seeing our young children gleefully jumping off the dock at Trout Lake into its cold clear water or grabbing a canoe...half a block from the house...that's what sold us on this house. Also, our house is rather uniquely surrounded by 'green space' of Sherwood Forest, so we're ensconced in our own little world on top of the hill. Wonderful neighbors are close enough to meet on a walk, but not within sight when on the deck or looking out the windows. Besides Trout Lake and 4 other lakes, the pool, tennis courts and golf course are a quick bike ride, good walk, or short car ride away. There is always something to do or the peace to not do anything.
Castellaw is a one-level updated home with hardwood and tile floors incredibly located near SO much to see, feel, and breathe. Room for large or extended family without being overwhelming. No dank basement with which to contend! Double garage with ramp into house to roll suitcases without steps (just 2 anyway at front door). Larger laundry room and nicer kitchen than we have 'at home.' Comfortably appointed, yet livable. A fun house! The stars from the deck at night - January or July - just awesome!
My family and I just went this Labor Day weekend. We had so much fun. Plenty of room, kitchen was great, and loved the deck. The Wilkes were great and acommedating. Would love to go again. Worth the trip.
Awesome property, owners and location.
Our 2nd stay and we are planning next year to stay even longer.
Couldn't ask for more! The home is awesome and the perfect setting for a get away to the mountains. Everything you need is provided. The owners did everything to make sure all was perfect. Great communicators and always available for any questions. The kitchen is well stocked with extra dishes, cooking pans, utensils, etc. We will certainly be back! I hate to brag too much because I don't want it to always be rented when we're ready for our get-away!
The property is located in a beautiful Audubon development with forest and lakes that can be enjoyed. It is wonderful for hiking, canoeing, and nature walks and is convenient to DuPont and Brevard. The cabin itself is in excellent condition with upgrades to kitchen and bathrooms. Housekeeping was noted as great throughout and we truly felt at home. The homeowners are also incredible to work with and are the most responsive owners we have ever communicated with. I have already referred the cabin to several people and we plan to return next year. It is a wonderful property and cabin.

We'll be brief--we loved our stay at Vicki and Craig's place. The home is a beautiful classic ranch home (I'm a custom home builder, so I tend to fixate on these things ! ) in a beautiful setting. Many activities to do in 'Sherwood Forest' and some of the best mountain biking in the country just a few miles away in Dupont State Forest. A short distance the other direction takes you to the really fine town of Brevard with great restaurants, shops and brew pubs--and Pisgah National Forest with all it's internationally known bike trails. A little further and you're on the Blue Ridge Highway.
Vicki and Craig are great to work with and when a glitch occurred in my travel dates, they were happy to accommodate me.
Summary? Great place, great owners, great time !
This was our third trip to Sherwood Forest this summer, our second staying at Castellaw. The Forest is a wonderland of leafy hiking trails and clear, serene lakes. If you are after quiet, peace, serenity, natural beauty and a respite from the heat of the lowlands, this place is for you. The house is well-equipped and comfortable. Just minutes from fabulous mountain biking and waterfalls at Dupont State Forest, yet near to town for convenient shopping and dining.
Location of 'Castellaw' is at the 3000' elevation just 8 miles south of Brevard, NC, in Sherwood Forest, an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary of 1000 private acres w/over 22 miles marked hiking trails, 5 lakes for swimming, boating, and fishing, plus a large heated pool (seasonal), free tennis, and miles of paved roads for walking/jogging/bicycling. Beautiful golf course (18 holes all par-3) is available for very reasonable greens fees (with llamas for caddies on Tuesdays!). You're less than 15 minutes to Dupont State Forest (film location for the Hunger Games), Caesar's Head State Park (overlook of 50+ miles) and 45 minutes to the Blue Ridge Parkway and all its overlooks and hiking trails. Asheville is just 45 minutes away for extraordinary antiques / Biltmore Estate / art/music/restaurants. Brevard Music Center's summer programs are magnificent and less than 15 minutes from Castellaw! So much to see and do...Many additional golf courses within 15-45 minute drive.
