1 mile walk from Bath yet almost isolated-10 ft tide and eagles. Perfection!!

Overview

About the property

House, 5 Bedrooms, 3 Baths, (Sleeps 8) or just perfect for 2 people.

Please read all of this to the end..... Just ask our friends, family, and renters and they will all tell you that Graywoods is the perfect house, with the perfect location (1 mile from Bath), with the perfect opportunities for you to enjoy a fabulous vacation, ANY TIME OF THE YEAR!!!

The house has 5 bedrooms and 3 baths. One of the bedrooms and bathrooms is on the ground floor which is perfect for those who might have difficulty navigating stairs. 3 of the 4 bedrooms upstairs have glorious water views.

The main floor is open space with a dining room table that can easily seat 14 and two "living areas" one of which has a lovely wood burning fireplace.

The screened in porch and deck serve as more living space with a grill, hot tub, and comfy porch furniture for relaxation and conversation.

The grounds/lawn/garden are expansive and very guest friendly. A simple tree swing has been enjoyed for many years by children of all ages. Cornball is also a lively option. Of course within a 5 mile area, one finds tennis courts, golf courses, and a vibrant YMCA.

A very short walk on a forest path takes you to our dock where you will find two paddle boards, two kayaks, and a canoe. The dock comes in during the winter but "the fleet" remains always accessible. 10 foot tides provide incredible opportunities to explore our bay.

Finally, Graywoods is our family house. Our kitchen is fully equipped (Viking 6 burner stove, double wall ovens, commercial ice machine, warming drawer and all the utensils and machines you could possibly use) to help you to prepare delicious meals. Don't worry about bringing spices, condiments etc as you will find most of them waiting for you.

Linens and towels are all monogrammed and beautiful.

There is a treasure chest of games, toys for children of all ages, and books that will offer you opportunities to relax like you haven't been able to do for many years!

We have lived in many places and our furniture and art all reflect the full lives we have been privileged to lead.

There is still one thing that makes Graywoods special and different from almost any other rental - OUR EAGLES

Just off our deck and with no need for binoculars is our eagle's nest and it is HUGE. This year we had two babies hatched on May 1 and taking their first flight on July 4th!! Although they have left their nest, parents and babes return daily for old times' sake. What a privilege this is.....

If you have ANY questions, just send them on or call at 207-233-9120. We care about Graywoods and rent it not just for the $$$$ but really because it is so very special that we want to share it with you particularly as we have lived in it during all four of the seasons. It rocks! Hugh and Judy

About Judy and Hugh Tilson

We are a happily retired couple with 4 grown kids and 11 grandchildren. Our professional lives have required travel worldwide and while we continue to travel, Graywoods is our favorite place to be although we do divide our time between Chapel Hill and Maine. We love answering questions from our renters!

Judy and Hugh Tilson purchased this house in 1991

Why Judy and Hugh Tilson chose Woolwich

We chose to buy a family home in this location as it is within walking distance to Bath and has a view that simply does not end. We only started renting the house when our children were not able to use it. This house is too special not to share and when purchased was never intended to be a rental.

What makes this house unique

This is a special place. The dining room table seats fourteen and is the starting point for many wonderful conversations. The house is about being! Outside there are lovely gardens and a walk through the woods to a dock with great boating and swimming - when the tide is right! The city of Bath, Maine is within walking distance and you get to walk right by the Dairy Queen to get there. There are so many wonderful things to do here.

Guestbook comments from the owner

What a wonderful time our family had at Graywoods. The weather was perfect and we enjoyed our time swimming off the dock and taking the kayaks and canoe out. We also had a great time shopping in Freeport but had even more fun shopping in Bath. Reny's and Now You're Cooking are not to be missed. We cannot wait to come back to Graywoods and next time we may have time to hike and even go to Boothbay. It was a great vacation..

Graywoods is the perfect retreat!

  • 5 of 5

The tasteful decor and idyllic setting will feed your soul. With little or no light pollution, the starry sky is magnificent - not to be outdone by glorious sunrises over the water. There is bountiful room for spreading out, for discovery or finding a peaceful spot to read. We had plenty of room to entertain a few cousins one day and some former neighbors another. Hugh and Judy left a comprehensive volume of things to do and places to explore in the area, shopping ideas, and restaurant recommendations. They were also available to answer any and all questions we had , with a quick email turn around! No running around is necessary, tho, as there is plenty to keep you occupied on the grounds! We feel very privileged to have been guests at Graywoods.

Fun for all ages

Perfect family stay. Loved walking into Bath for coffee. Kids enjoyed the beaches and the dock with the paddle boards. The eagles performed beautifully and flew for the first time on the 4th of July. Sorry to see the

Vacation end but we will definitely return next year.

Tranquil, comfortable family vacation home

  • 5 of 5

Our family of six just spent Memorial Day at Graywoods in Woolwich, Maine, close to Brunswick and Portland, to gather for a family member's college graduation. We had a lovely weekend: the home is indeed perfect, with cozy seating positioned by picture windows overlooking the river and estuary for bird watching (eagles in their nest!) and cloud watching. The kitchen is a cook's dream, well-equipped to handle family and visiting guests. The bedrooms were large and comfortable. Walking to the river's edge is a delight. Owners Judy and her husband are very thoughtful and helpful hosts-- and we all enjoyed friendly conversation. This is a spot not to be missed and we hope someday to go back.

It's true -- the perfect house, anytime of the year.

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay at Graywood's, the first two winters ago, and then just this past spring. I would have to begin by saying that the most remarkable feature of the property is the immediate sense one gets of feeling at home. It is truly striking. This stems, I think, from the fact that Graywoods has in fact been a family home for generations (it seems) and the owners have had the good sense to leave it as such. Not only does the layout of the home live comfortably, but it is decorated in an easy and eclectic style. There is plenty of room to stretch out, four comfortable bedrooms up stairs, and the fine presence of a downstairs bedroom (with bath) for anyone who might have trouble with stairs.

The setting is lovely and peaceful, overlooking a large bay, and though it may not be the endless infinitude of an ocean view, it does have a similarly open feel (if you absolutely need the beach and sound of surf this is probably not for you). My favorite spot was in an Adirondack chair on the lawn reading my vacation Tom Clancy novel; a close second was lunch on the screened in porch. There is the additional fact that, being at the boundary of woods and water, there was an interesting variety of birds. Certainly the presence of the eagles -- their nest was right there, not 100 feet from us -- was stunning; they were our neighbors, not some distant presence. Nearby are both Reid beach and Popham beach, and I spotted my first Yellow Warbler on one outing! And if you need a little touch of "city life" the town of Bath is just a quick hop over the bridge. It is a sweet little town.

The only downside, if I may say, was a degree of road sound from Route 1 in the distance, but this was a low grade background that fades away. The home itself is tucked away along a warren of back roads, and dead ends right up to the water. The last stretch takes one over a little bridge and there is an almost magical sense of entering a forgotten and enchanted world...

The owner, Judy, has been a delight to work with, and any issues that may have come up were dealt with promptly (this recent visit, for example, the thermostat had somehow been set to "Cooling Mode", but this was addressed literally within minutes of my notifying her).

I would highly recommend Graywoods.

Owner's Response: We love having returnees particularly when they have come at two different times of the year. Our family loves Graywoods and for those who have stayed with us, they - and their families -are also part of our family. The White Noise of Route 1 lessens when the trees are fully out and when the breeze blows off the water and then there is no sound. The price we pay for the slight noise is the accessibility to Bath, Bowdoin, and LL Bean. Believe it or not we have all had multiple discussions regarding the proximity to Route 1 and have decided that it is nice to be able to walk across the big bridge into Bath and its coffee shop (less than one mile away) and mighty fine other advantages..... Thanks for taking the time to write the review......and come back with your family. Judy

Thanksgiving Week at Greywoods

  • 5 of 5

A trip to Maine has been on our family's wish list for many years, and Greywoods was the perfect place for it. The home was loaded with charm, and the service and care from the owners was outstanding. The location was also great. The home feels private, but is very close to downtown Bath. It is also conveniently located for day trips to other interesting sites in Maine (and only a couple of hours from Boston). We arrived at night and woke up the next morning to a beautiful sunrise and a show from two bald eagles nesting in the yard, and the week just got better and better! This home exceeded all of our expectations!
