About Jenn Smith

My husband and I moved to Chattanooga in 2003 after graduating from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. In 2005, we purchased this home as a labor of love. Over the past several years we've renovated this home from an empty shell to the jewel it is today. We loved the character of the home, originally built in the 1920s. So we stayed true to the homes historic features while adding modern conveniences. Since beginning the home's renovation, we got engaged on the front porch in 2006, we got married at the Hunter Museum in 2008, we started our own architectural business (located on Frazier Avenue) in 2009 and had our son in 2011 & another son on the way, due in 2014.

Why Jenn Smith chose Chattanooga

This home is very near and dear to our hearts. We chose to buy this home because we love the area. The neighborhood is so alive with people walking their dogs, riding their bikes & sitting on their porches... everyone is always outside enjoying life and the company of others. The proximity to all Chattanooga has to offer is so convenient, whether walking or driving, it takes no more than a few minutes to get anywhere. This property is conveniently located to the interstate and a 10-minute drive to the airport.

What makes this house unique

What we love most about this home is the front porch. It's privately located in the tree tops away from cars and pedestrians on the street. From here, you can enjoy the birds and the squirrels & the view of Downtown. During baseball season, you can even watch the fireworks display from the privacy of this beautiful home's front porch!

Wonderful house and great location on North Shore.

  • 1 of 5

We had a great visit and home updated throughout; great decorating and large kitchen if needed with new appliances etc. Beautiful deck in back. Ample parking available off and on street. Quite a few stairs to front door but certainly fine. Just be aware if any issues with stairs. Nice quiet neighborhood and very easy to get to all attractions in area.

Poor condition

  • 2 of 5

The cleaner was there when we arrived. The pocket door to the toilet off the living room wouldn't close so a repairman had to come over. Had to ask for toilet paper as there was only one extra for each bath for five people for five days. TThere was no propane so when we went out to grill our steaks and chicken we had to come in and use the stove. The towels are super cheap and old. The curtain over the glass door in the king bed bedroom didn't even cover the whole door and it was taped together and fell down on one side every day. The door handles in two bedrooms would come out if you moved them the wrong way. I took a bath to soak one night and the overflow drain doesn't go anywhere so as the water just flowed out it went on to the floor. The whole floor was covered in water so we had to mop up with towels. I was disappointed for what we paid and would like some of my money back. The kitchen is lovely and the beds are comfortable.

Great location and comfortable

  • 3 of 5

We had a great time at the “Treehouse” in Chattanooga. The house is comfortable and was renovated with a good eye for décor. The very comfortable living room was the main room for visiting, while the children (aged 3 to 8) played. The house was exceptionally clean and floors smooth – great for stocking feet and children playing.

The galley-style kitchen had all we needed in dishes. Glasses and ceramicware is stored visibly, and there’s a drawer for quality plastic cups and extraneous drinkware.

I was most impressed with how comfortable each of the beds were... something I especially appreciate and which no one has previously mentioned. Note that the bedrooms have king, queen, and double beds: bed sleeping for 6. As someone already mentioned, it’s probably not a good idea to plan on using the sofa bed, and, while my son slept comfortably on the couch in the living room, it doesn’t afford privacy.

The “sitting room” is really a pass-through room between the entry and the kitchen. We used it for visiting while cooking was taking place. We also found it an excellent buffet area for serving meals.

Much as we liked the house, there are a few other things I wish I’d known before choosing it: You can ignore the following if the owners post that issues have been addressed:

Bees - more than a few. Don’t let the big black bees buzzing around on the front deck scare you. They are wood-boring bees which aren’t interested in stinging. Instead, they are feasting on the unfinished pine that the deck is made up of. I spent some pleasant time on the front deck but would have preferred not dealing with the bees. The back deck has some wood rot, and there’s a section still needing renovation that’s chained off. Our toddler would not have been stopped by a chain, so we didn’t use the back deck or the yard.

There is access from each of the bedrooms to the back deck. The curtains covering those doors don’t really provide privacy. We joined previous guests in using sheets to cover where needed.

Finally, the pocket door into the toilet/shower of the bathroom directly off the living room is off its hinges and is impossible to close - so no privacy. If you try to lift it up to close it (and it’s heavy), it only partially closes before it drops onto the ceramic tile below. This was the only issue that would have been a deal-breaker had we not liked the house and neighborhood so much otherwise. We would gladly stay here again.
