The home was very comfortable and well-equipped. I spent every day hiking in Big Bend, so I was away most of the day except for evenings. I’m sure that many people opt to camp or find lodging in the park because of the distance (it’s 40 miles to the park entrance, and another 30 miles to the Panther Junction visitor center) but I didn’t mind the drive, and I knew that beforehand.
If you’re from any large, polluted city, you will be amazed by the number of stars that can be seen on a clear night. The only light pollution is from homes and businesses around town, so it’s otherwise pretty dark (slow down and be careful driving on HWY 90 at night - animals might be in the road).
Being from the upper Texas coast, the dry air and cool mornings were refreshing. I can’t spend more than 30 seconds outside this time of year at home without sweating. They have doors you can open to let in the fresh air, but I opted not to since the bugs were horrible, probably due to recent rain.
Overall, I’d recommend this place to anyone visiting the area as a home base for a trip to Big Bend or Marfa as long as you’re okay with driving to get to those places. Marathon has everything you need. Alternatively, if you’re just looking for a place to park on the couch and do nothing for a couple days, this would be a great option for that, too.
