About the property

Great sunsets 3b/2bth sleeps 7-9 beach club access w. shower, tennis, basketball

Welcome to our GLASS house (designed and built by a notable Chicago architect in the late 1960's). The 2 storied house is made of cedar with two sides of the place all glass to welcome the sun or to view a perfect sunset on a medium bluff directly on and high above Lake Michigan.

Although we have stairs down to our seawall, above the water, which is pretty high this year, all guests may use our nearby private beach club (Memorial Day-Labor Day) with tennis, basketball, kids play structure, bathrooms, showers, kitchen, etc. just ten minutes from our house, up the street on foot or 30 seconds by car. Never crowded and very beautiful too. Many local beaches, including magoon creek and sundling park and golf nearby.

Two interior decks overlooking the living room. Four exterior decks, including one guest bedroom deck overlooking the lake, while the second bedroom deck overlooks the woods in front. Nice kitchen fridge/dishwasher, stove/oven/vent/disposal plus enough gear to be a gourmet for the evening or breakfast and lunch, which you can enjoy on your enormous deck out back on the lakeside, and hear the wind and the waves.

Sleeps 7 in beds plus 2 on pull out couch in living room. 2 full baths (one just for the master bedroom), and all amenities, including washer/dryer. A cool, mid-century modern fireplace inside and plenty of firewood, with forests everywhere. We have central air, high speed internet, wifi, smart/cable tv, Sonos Wifi Music System, land line phone service, Verizon signal extender, fire pit outside with plenty of chairs and firewood, gas grill with extra tank, swing-set, beach toys, outdoor dining, baby stuff ( baby high-chair, stroller, tent, baby video monitor, activity play seat ) and four bikes (three for kids, one for adults-with a child bike seat).

It is a totally cool place in a forested neighborhood, private with a few neighbors nearby, about twelve minutes south of historic Manistee, just off highway 31.

About Alena

We have visited and stayed in all parts of the world, so we appreciate the attention to details that make for a great rental holiday. All you have to do is show up. Nearly everything has been provided for you at the Glass House...

Alena purchased this house in 2013

Why Alena chose Manistee

It is probably one of the most interesting interior spaces we have ever seen or visited. It is also in a very magical location. Just see for yourself....We saw it one afternoon, loved it immediately and decided to buy it that same evening.

What makes this house unique

A rare, entirely Mid-Century Modern house, Chicago architect designed. Built in 1967, unique. With no interior/exterior alterations from the original design concept. 100 stairs down to our seawall on the big lake...

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hi! We have just left. We had such a nice time. Sunday we rode our bikes to church & the congregation welcomed us to join them for coffee. We spent much of the day touring Manistee. We loved the Betsie Bike Trail & how friendly the people were in the towns along the trail. The public beach was impressively nice with all it offers. Your lake house was very welcoming & comfortable-made it easy for us to relax & enjoy the natural beauty of nature. Thank you for sharing!

Great Location & Good Vibes

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time staying at the Glass House. There was plenty of room for our family of four, and even when extended family came up for a day trip, it didn't feel crowded at all. we loved all of the windows and the floor plan of the home that made it feel light and airy.

The house was immaculate when we arrived. We have rented many other homes over the years and this one truly was spotless. Everything at the home is in good working order and well maintained.

The owners did a great job making us feel at home and offering to help us if we needed anything.

There are beautiful views of the lake from the high bluff, and the association beach is perfect. There's a little creek that winds out of the forest to the beach that the kids really enjoyed playing in.

About a 5 minute drive away is Magoon Creek county park, also with a really nice beach, picnic area and hiking trails. We also spent some time at First Street Beach in Manistee which is gorgeous. The location of the home is close to the National Forest, where you can hike, camp, mountain bike or paddle the pine river. It was a great way to spend a day!

Glass House = dream home away from home

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week at the Glass House in the middle of July 2018. It was everything we hoped it would be! We found the house nestled on a wooded lot in a quiet neighborhood just a short drive from Manistee. Upon arriving I went straight to the backyard because the anticipated sight and sound of Lake Michigan is as much a part of why I booked this property as the house itself. I was not disappointed. The spacious backyard was well shaded along the property lines with plenty of room in between for playing and/or spending time around the fire pit. At the back edge of the property a bluff covered in vegetation that attracts butterflies drops down to the water's edge. One hundred steps lead down to the water. We were only able to go 2/3 of the way down the steps as the lower 1/3 had been damaged and was roped off. It was still fun to go down the steps and watch and listen to the waves. We did enjoy the private beach in the neighborhood. If you walk a few feet out, past the rocky shoreline, the sandy bottom is smooth as silk and the water is perfectly clear. Inside the house we had plenty of space for our family of six. Lovely views from every room, comfortable beds, everything you need in a kitchen, spectacular great room for hours of family fun in the evening. Abundant space both indoors and out for viewing the spectacular sunsets! I can't think of anything that was missing. In Manistee we enjoyed pizza at Famous Flynn's, ice cream at House of Flavors, steaks and fish at Bungalow Inn, tacos and shrimp po' boys and brisket at North Channel Brewing Company. We also enjoyed shopping at Swankyz, the Happy Owl Bookshop, Maryann's Antiques, and other cute, eclectic shops along River Street. I don't know which I enjoyed more...River Street or the Riverwalk! We took a day trip to the charming town of Ludington and enjoyed miniature golf right across the street from a lovely beach/park which includes a walkout to the North Breakwater Lighthouse. We took a trip up M-22 where we took in the Arcadia Overlook, toured the Point Betsie Lighthouse, bought fresh blueberries and cherries at a roadside stand, and conquered the dunes at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. We also enjoyed a quick visit to Traverse City with the beautiful bay, a vibrant and charming downtown, and an eclectic mix of shops at The Village at Grand Traverse Commons. Thank you, Alena, for allowing us to call your Glass House "home" for our Michigan vacation!

wonderful rental!

  • 5 of 5

my family rented the glass house for two weeks and we loved it! the owners attend to every detail, so you really can enjoy yourself right when you arrive.

the house is just a perfect size for 6-7 people. its a beautiful, late 1960's modern house, with nearly every wall made of either rough cedar, or glass. the daily views and sunsets on lake michigan are superb, especially by the firepit out back. we really loved the glass house and can't wait to return. thanks!

Stunning lake views!!!

  • 5 of 5

My family and I stayed at The Glass House in July 2017 (6 adults and 1 child) -- we loved it! The house was phenomenal. Open floor plan, comfortable furniture, unique and lovely decor, fireplace for cool Michigan nights, fully stocked kitchen for cooking, board and card games, chairs for beach, etc. Our favorite part was the outdoor decks that lined the lake-side of the house -- I believe we spent most of our time there enjoying the beautiful weather, nature, and boats on the lake. We also roasted smores over the outdoor fire pit while watching the sunset over the lake. The owners are wonderful -- they made sure that we had everything we needed, sent us a list of things to do in the area before we arrived, and also had a huge binder full of nearby attractions in the house. The beach was a short walk away and we also visited the First Street Beach in Manistee, which has the tallest playground slide I have ever seen (and super fun according to my nephew). Highly recommend riding the dunes at Silver Lake -- highlight of the trip! We don't recommend tubing in the lazy river -- too slow for us (it would have been better to kayak or canoe), but we made some good memories! We typically go to Florida every year, but Michigan may now be our new destination! Great weather, lots of outdoor activities, and good family fun. Thank you for letting us stay in your beautiful lake home!

Our stay was fantastic! Elena was great to work with. The house more than met our needs, especially for the value. The only reason it is not five stars for the value is because the lake water was up very high and they lost some of their beach at the house. You still get the amazing sunsets and have access to the water. The problem was solved by using the community beach which is only a two minute drive - but no stairs!!! Our kids loved the basketball court and creek on the beach and all of the neighbors were so nice! Thanks Elena!!
