Space 1,500 sq. ft.
Property type house

About the property

Great sunsets 3b/2bth sleeps 7-9 beach club access w. shower, tennis, basketball

Welcome to our GLASS house (designed and built by a notable Chicago architect in the late 1960's). The 2 storied house is made of cedar with two sides of the place all glass to welcome the sun or to view a perfect sunset on a medium bluff directly on and high above Lake Michigan.

Although we have stairs down to our seawall, above the water, which is pretty high this year, all guests may use our nearby private beach club (Memorial Day-Labor Day) with tennis, basketball, kids play structure, bathrooms, showers, kitchen, etc. just ten minutes from our house, up the street on foot or 30 seconds by car. Never crowded and very beautiful too. Many local beaches and golf nearby.

Two interior decks overlooking the living room. Four exterior decks, including one guest bedroom deck overlooking the lake, while the second bedroom deck overlooks the woods in front. Nice kitchen fridge/dishwasher, stove/oven/vent/disposal plus enough gear to be a gourmet for the evening or breakfast and lunch, which you can enjoy on your enormous deck out back on the lakeside, and hear the wind and the waves.

Sleeps 7 in beds plus 2 on pull out couch in living room. 2 full baths (one just for the master bedroom), and all amenities, including washer/dryer. A cool, mid-century modern fireplace inside and plenty of firewood, with forests everywhere. We have central air, high speed internet, wifi, smart/cable tv, Sonos Wifi Music System, land line phone service, Verizon signal extender, fire pit outside with plenty of chairs and firewood, gas grill with extra tank, swing-set, beach toys, outdoor dining, baby stuff ( baby high-chair, stroller, tent, baby video monitor, activity play seat ) and four bikes (three for kids, one for adults).

It is a totally cool place in a forest neighborhood, very private with a few neighbors, about twelve minutes south of historic Manistee, just off highway 31.

3 night minimum rentals (only Early September to Late June): $285/nt.-$1710/wk.

Weekly Saturday to Saturday rentals only in summer: $1890-$1974/week late June to early September.

50% of the rental week payment required to hold the reservation. For the second payment, guests pay the balance due, plus 300$ refundable security deposit, to cover losses/damages. Cleaning fee is $100. Taxes/service fees are additional, based upon rental amount with VRBO/Homeaway.

About Alena

We have visited and stayed in all parts of the world, so we appreciate the attention to details that make for a great rental holiday. All you have to do is show up. Nearly everything has been provided for you at the Glass House...

Alena purchased this house in 2013

Why Alena chose Michigan

It is probably one of the most interesting interior spaces we have ever seen or visited. It is also in a very magical location. Just see for yourself....We saw it one afternoon, loved it immediately and decided to buy it that same evening.

What makes this house unique

Entirely Mid-Century Modern, Chicago architect designed. Built in 1967, unique. With no interior alterations from the original design concept. 100 stairs down to our seawall...

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hi! We have just left. We had such a nice time. Sunday we rode our bikes to church & the congregation welcomed us to join them for coffee. We spent much of the day touring Manistee. We loved the Betsie Bike Trail & how friendly the people were in the towns along the trail. The public beach was impressively nice with all it offers. Your lake house was very welcoming & comfortable-made it easy for us to relax & enjoy the natural beauty of nature. Thank you for sharing!

Very nice home

  • 5 of 5

We stayed with our 2 boys and was just an excellent home for that. Open, overlooking Lake Michigan, close to town...overall very nice. Owners were very responsive. Totally recommend.

Great views, attention to detail, comfortable home with floor to ceiling windows

  • 5 of 5

The home had beautiful views with floor to ceiling glass windows to view beautiful Lake MI sunsets. The home was very comfortable and very clean. Also enjoyed the nice cookware and glassware. Very easy drive to downtown Manistee, area wineries and casino.

wonderful place to rent in winter

  • 5 of 5

The Glass House is a wonderful place to rent in the winter months too. The owners have provided everything that one can need for a great experience. You really do not need to bring anything here. There is plenty of firewood to use, and much to see in the area. The house is ready for you, with its beautiful artwork, comfortable beds, pillows and blankets. We can't wait to come back.

Fabulous house!

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying in this wonderful glass house on the edge of Lake Michigan. It was an ideal setting for a relaxing getaway. The large, open, central room has dramatic views of the lake, a wood burning fireplace, plentiful seating and a flat screen tv. Each morning we had coffee in comfortable chairs on an interior deck looking out on the water (hard to describe but fabulous). The kitchen is well stocked and the bedrooms are quiet and comfortable. I am sure it is incredible in the summer, but it's a great winter escape, too. And the owners were so thoughtful and genuinely interested in making us feel at home. We are grateful we found this home to unwind in after a hectic year.

September at the Glass House

  • 5 of 5

The Glass House was even better than the photos and reviews had lead us to expect. The common area was very spacious and the view of Lake Michigan was awesome, especially when we watched a storm cross the lake. The bench on the stairs to the dock was a perfect place to enjoy a cocktail.

We didn't need the fireplace inside, but we did enjoy a fire (and smores) the first night. The neighborhood provided a scenic area for a walk or run. Manistee was nearby and neat place to visit, but we felt as though we were remote and private.

The Glass House was well equipped, well maintained and very clean. The owners went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable and were able to accommodate a last minute change in arrival caused by a glitch in our scheduling.

The Glass House more than met our needs and we hope to stay again in the future.

August 2016 The Glass House

  • 5 of 5

The Glass House was lovely- everything more then lived up to expectations. The kitchen was very well stocked, everything was very clean. The Wifi and sonus audio system worked great. The house is on a bluff but the obviously new stair case down the bluff to the water made access to the water and deck platform an unexpected option so that my family often just hung out at the house and swam off the front of the property. (This would not be an option for smaller children but for our college aged ones it worked) . The private community beach area was very close with parking just down the block with clean restrooms, changing area, and lounge rooms in the clubhouse to get out of the sun if needed, it was a great place to relax for the afternoon or to enjoy a sunset. We would be thrilled to return to this lovely home.
