About the property

Just across the street from the beach, and not listed as beachfront.

Nestled peacefully between the Caribbean Sea and the Placencia Lagoon is the jewel of Maya Beach; Mi Sastun. This tropical haven will have a healing and rejuvenating effect on all who stay here. This charming house offers many amenities, such as east and west verandas, air conditioning, 32'television/100+channels, ceiling fans, fully equipped kitchen, three bedrooms(2 queen size, two singles), spacious living/dining area and lush tropical landscaping. All this and it's only a 60 second walk to the sea. Lagoon access is a short kayak ride from the house. THIS HOUSE IS NOT LISTED AS BEACHFRONT, but just across the street from the beach. First class dining is also close at hand. The Maya Beach Bistro and the Green Parrot Beach Houses are only a brief walk away. There is a grocery store, several bars, and even a bowling alley in Maya Beach. Land and sea tours can be arranged through the Green Parrot Beach Houses. The manager, Leo Ramirez, and his friendly staff can see to your every need.

Just a short kayak ride from the beach, you will find False Caye. This small island is surrounded by coral heads, sea fans, many tropical fish and an occasional manatee will swim past. All you will need is a mask and snorkel to enjoy these colorful sights.

Just six miles to the south, is the village of Placencia. A bustling little town, filled with restaurants, bars, gift shops, grocery stores, banks(ATM) and friendly locals. There is a bus service and taxis to take you to and from Placencia. Rental cars are also available in the village.

Whether you are into reef trips, Mayan ruins, cave tours, bird and wildlife watching, zip lining or just walking the miles of white sand beaches, you will find it all at Mi Sastun.

About Larry F. Smith

I traveled extensively, in search of the 'right place'. Boating to Belize from Honduras, I saw Placencia on the horizon. Magic!! Coming ashore, I knew my search was over. As close to paradise as I had ever been, I was taken in. I began looking at properties and found a double lot in Maya Beach and Mi Sastun would soon become a reality. I am still working in the U.S., but try to get 'home' every two to three months. I have enjoyed this beautiful home since 2005 and have decided to share it with some of the lucky folks who find themselves in southern Belize. Come, stay, enjoy.

Larry F. Smith purchased this house in 2005

Why Larry F. Smith chose Placencia Peninsula

This property was where I wanted to be; close to the sea and the lagoon. Accessibility to all my needs. Great neighbors, good friends.

What makes this house unique

I feel the unique benefits of this home have to do with its location on the peninsula. You can take advantage of the proximity of the ocean for fishing, diving, snorkeling or beachcombing. Also, the access to the lagoon exposes you to some of the best fishing Belize has to offer. Here you will find snook, tarpon, jacks, Jewfish etc. Each one offers an exciting adventure and a tasty dinner that evening.

Winter Getaway

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at Mi Sastun. The location is ideal for a day at the beach or a trip down the Monkey River. We also made a day trip to the Mayan Runis. The beach across the street was beautiful with comfortable chairs and shade if you wanted it. The store is just a block away, and the town of Placencia is a short trip from the house. The house is air conditioned and furnished nicely.

We did have a few issues. We had no hot water the first day and night. The sheets would not stay on the bed...beds were a bit uncomfortable. One shower has very weak water pressure, but this did not keep us from having a great time

If you want a pool, the resort down the road, will let you swim if,you purchase a drink. The Rum Fish is a good restaurant for a nice meal....and don't pass up the gelato store next to it- real Italian gelato! We enjoyed the cafe at the beach in PlacencIa and another one, with a girl's name...can't remember the name.

I would recommend this place for family trips, or groups of friends. Enjoy!

Hello Smitty,

we had a spectacular time at mi sastun and I am very happy to write a review for VRBO. The place is really beautiful with great amenities, the beach is so accessible, it is fun to hear the birds at night and in the morning. We will definitely come back.

Leo is a gem who made everything easy, and linked us up with an extraordinary guide named Aleron who went out of his way to share his passion for all things outdoors Belizean--- on land and sea.

The only thing I would comment on to you for fixing is that the shower in the bathroom between the two smaller bedrooms has very low water pressure. I don't know if that can be fixed or not

Hope you have a very happy and healthy new year. All my best, Helene

Mi Sastun is a winner

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time on our recent trip to Maya Beach. The home was perfect for my family of 5. Exceptional location close to a number of outstanding restaurants, short walk to beach, close to grocery stores, etc.

Smitty is a very attentive owner who did everything within his power to make sure we enjoyed our stay and Leo (property manager) was available to coordinate kayaking, fishing trips, and zip line tours.

We will definitely be going back to Mi Sastun.

Great Place to Get Away and have access

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our time at Mi Sastun and Maya Beach!

The house is Super Cute! Well decorated, comfy, stocked (love having the 5 gallon drinking water, which we were able to fill at Green Parrot for cheap- and they walk it over!).

Two families of 3 stayed, and the kids shared the room with 2 beds. At first, I was worried that we would miss being away from the action in town, but it turned out being a highlight of the trip. You are one short block from the Grocery, can eat at the Green Parrot (who also has Wifi), and Mangos. You really have everything you need right there!

The beach was BEAUTIFUL! Smitty was very responsive via email, and Leo (property manager) helpful as well. We met Mark who keeps his boat right out front (one property down) who took us out snorkeling and fishing. You can take the bus to Placencia (and cab back worked best for us). Make sure you say 'hi' to the Green an actual Parrot...he will say 'hi' back.

First, let me say that Smitty (the owner) and Leo (the manager) are priceless! On our first trip to Belize, we were seeking a comfortable, yet 'Belizean' experience, rather than a sterile hotel room or an 'american-style' home plopped down in an exotic environment. Mi Sastun fit the bill. It was comfortable, spacious, and convenient. The location is great: on a lagoon just across the street from the Caribbean and restaurants, and just half a block from the grocery. Six adults could comfortably stay here. The bedrooms are spacious. There are 2 bathrooms. The decor and space actually are nicer than they appear in the photos. The property is lovely. It felt as though we were guests of a gracious Belizean family, rather than tourists.

I strongly suggest snorkeling, cave tubing, hiking at cockscomb and visiting Mayan ruins.

Perfect family home for a restorative winter escape

  • 5 of 5

This was the best family vacation we've ever taken. Mi Sastun was a wonderful refuge from a long and dreary winter, and for seven days it was heaven. The house was a wonderful retreat for rest and quiet between activities, time on the beach and trips to Placencia Village.

Leo and his crew at the Green Parrot across the street made the house and the patio into a delightful home away from home. Leo and his team made our snorkeling and Monkey River trips smooth and fantastic. He also pointed us the way to a new and unpublicized national park and waterfall with only a short drive from the house. We had fun paddling out to False Caye and snorkeling the coral heads there as well as the Silk Caye trip that Leo arranged.

We had planned to cook some of our meals, but the food at the Parrot was wonderful and the staff were so accommodating. Make sure to have dinner one night at the Maya Beach Bistro.

I hope to make this trip a regular winter getaway, my only regret was not arranging for a longer stay...
